JDT unveil new signing, Nacho Mendez

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Sporting Gijon midfielder Nacho Mendez has been officially unveiled as Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT)'s latest signing, and is also set to don the Malaysian jersey as well. The Southern Tigers announced this on their Facebook page today with a caption: "Malaysia heritage player Nacho Mendez joins Johor Darul Ta'zim". They also posted that the 27-year-old made Johor his first destination after playing in Spain. Mendez has spent his entire professional career with Sporting. Since debuting for their senior side in 2017, he has made over 170 appearances in all competitions. A versatile midfielder, he contributed one goal and three assists in 36 appearances in the 2023–24 Segunda season. Mendez is expected to join JDT's other heritage players — Jon Irazabal, Hector Hevel and Joao Figueiredo — who all made their debut for Harimau Malaya this year.

Sporting Gijon star set to join JDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The Spanish media are saying it. Nacho Mendez, the former captain of Sporting Gijon, will join Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). Timesport reported last month JDT had made a lucrative offer to the 27-year-old midfielder. The Spanish media have also reported about Mendez's exit from Sporting Gijon after 15 years. Mendez, who officially parted ways with the Segunda Division side on June 30, wrote an emotional farewell open letter to the club's fans. Throughout his time in Asturias, Mendez made over 170 appearances for the senior team and was consistently among the league's top midfielders in key statistical categories, including progressive passes, crosses into the box, and defensive duels won. Despite efforts by Sporting Gijon to extend his contract and interest from other clubs in Spain's top two tiers, Mendez has opted to explore a new opportunity abroad. While Mendez has yet to name his next club, all signs point to JDT as the midfielder prepares to embrace a new footballing culture far from El Molinon. It is learnt that Mendez is set to come to Malaysia as a heritage player, alongside Jon Irazabal, Facundo Garces, Gabriel Palmero, Hector Hevel, Imanol Machuca, Rodrigo Holgado and Joao Figueiredo, who all made their debut for Harimau Malaya this year.

JDT making lucrative salary offer to Sporting Gijon's Mendez?

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) are reportedly preparing a lucrative offer to get Real Sporting Gijon midfielder Nacho Mendez. According to Spanish football insider Angel Garcia, under the name Cazurreando on X, Mendez is considering the JDT offer. "The midfielder of @RealSporting, Nacho Mendez, would be handling an offer from @OfficialJohor, where Jese Rodriguez, Jonathan Viera and Antonio Glauder played, among more than a dozen Spaniards, which would multiply his current salary by four," posted Garcia. Sporting Gijon are said to be keen to renew the 27-year-old's contract, while clubs from Spain's La Liga and Segunda Division have also shown interest in Mendez. Mendez has spent his entire professional career with Sporting. Since debuting for the senior side in 2017, he has made over 170 appearances in all competitions. A versatile central midfielder, he contributed one goal and three assists in 36 appearances during the 2023–24 Segunda season. His current market value, according to Transfermarkt, is €1.2 million (RM6.1 million). In a separate post, Cazurreando hinted that Mendez could earn around €400,000 (approximately RM2.04 million) annually in Malaysia.
