Parliament LIVE news updates: Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha adjourned for the day

Parliament LIVE: The revised National Anti-Doping Act is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament on Wednesday, incorporating amendments requested by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada), which had objected to what it termed as "government interference" in the operations of India's National Anti-Doping Agency (Nada). Although the Act was originally passed in 2022, its enforcement was suspended following objections raised by Wada. The global watchdog took issue with the creation of a National Board for Anti-Doping in Sports, which was granted authority to make recommendations to the government on anti-doping policy. This Board—comprising a Chairperson and two members appointed by the central government—was also empowered to supervise Nada and issue directives to it. WADA viewed this as undue governmental influence over an independent body and rejected the provision. Consequently, the amended bill has removed this clause to align with Wada's requirements. Additional changes are also expected, potentially including reduced liability for athletes in doping violations. Parliament disrupted by protests over Bihar voter list Parliamentary proceedings were disrupted on Tuesday, the second day of the Monsoon Session, as opposition parties staged protests over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, leading to adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. In the Rajya Sabha, as the session commenced, Deputy Chairman Harivansh referenced the vacancy in the vice president's office, citing constitutional provisions, but was interrupted by opposition protests over the voter roll revision, resulting in an adjournment. When the House reconvened at noon, BJP leader Ghanshyam Tiwari informed members that the Ministry of Home Affairs had issued a notification confirming the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

DBKL, police raid Kuala Lumpur entertainment outlets

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), police, and the National Anti-Drug Agency (Nada) raided entertainment and snooker centres in the city over the weekend. The operation, which began at 9pm on Saturday and ended at 3am on Sunday, inspected five premises in Jalan Ipoh, Chow Kit, and Jalan Tun Razak. These premises were suspected of operating entertainment activities without valid licences and breaching licence conditions. DBKL said two premises were ordered to close immediately, while various equipment from four entertainment outlets was seized. "Seven compound notices were also issued for offences such as operating without an entertainment licence, employing foreign workers as assistants, and organising entertainment activities beyond permitted hours. "The enforcement was carried out under the Local Government Licensing of Food Establishments (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) By-Laws 2016, Licensing of Trades, Businesses and Industries (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) By-Laws 2016, Entertainment Rules (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) 1993, and the Entertainment Act (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) 1992," it said in a statement. It added that police and Nada personnel also conducted inspections and urine screening tests on individuals and patrons at the premises, resulting in four people testing positive for drugs. Nada then detained these individuals for further action.

Ford dealers in South Africa commit nearly R1bn to facility upgrades

'Retail facilities that align with Ford's global design standards consistently outperform non-upgraded sites on key customer-facing metrics.' He added that rather than focusing on outright scale, Ford's strategy will be to right-size facilities, optimise location, improve digital readiness and upgrade aftersales infrastructure to better serve tech-savvy and time-conscious customers. Ford has 118 facilities across South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Eswatini, ranking the brand among the top three by size in South Africa. This year 20 new Ford dealer projects and facility upgrades are starting or scheduled for completion, and the network supports more than 10,000 direct jobs in South Africa, said Hill. 'Dealers play a critical role in bringing the brand to life, ensuring Ford's values, service standards and customer promises are upheld across every touchpoint.' Ford is a volume brand with the locally built Ranger holding the position of South Africa's best-selling double cab. Dealer sales across all brands accounted for more than 85% of all new vehicle sales in South Africa during the first half of the year, with the balance split between the rental market (8.2%), corporate fleets (3.2%) and government procurement (2.7%). New-vehicle sales recorded their ninth successive year-on-year improvement in June and there have been 236,914 new vehicles sold in South Africa for the year to date — a 12.9% increase compared to the same period last year. 'Though coming off a low base in 2024, the numbers are not just a rebound, they are a show of force from South African motor dealers,' said Brandon Cohen, chair of the National Automobile Dealers' Association (Nada) after the release of June sales figures. 'When you consider the layered complexity of our operating environment — from domestic politics to global supply pressures — these figures reflect the unmatched responsiveness and customer focus of our dealer networks across the country. 'South African consumers are showing remarkable resolve and our dealer community is matching that with operational excellence and customer-centric innovation. If these trends hold, 2025 may yet prove to be a landmark year for our sector.'

Nada pledges firm action against staff linked to misconduct

KUALA LUMPUR : The National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) has vowed to take firm action against any of its staff found guilty of misconduct or breaching integrity standards. This follows revelations of violence against clients and failure to act on individuals who tested positive for drugs at its rehabilitation centres. The agency was responding to findings published by the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) on July 14, which highlighted incidents at the Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (Puspen). Nada director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said the agency fully welcomes the EAIC's investigative report and reiterated that it will not tolerate or protect any officer involved in misconduct. "Disciplinary and legal action will be taken against those proven to have violated the law or service code of conduct," he said in a statement today. He reminded all Nada staff to carry out their duties with integrity and in full adherence to standard operating procedures and the Director-General's Standing Orders. "Nada remains committed to working closely with the EAIC to strengthen good governance, especially in investigating complaints of misconduct and integrity issues within the agency," Ruslin added.
