Seawater floods fields at Betalbatim, farmers suffer
Colva: More than 40 farmers from Thondvaddo, Betalbatim, have suffered significant agricultural losses after seawater breached barriers and inundated their fields nearly a kilometre inland. Locals said the rough sea led to the failure of the 'handi', a traditional bund structure that usually protects low-lying fields from saline water intrusion. The pressure of the tide caused the barrier to collapse, allowing seawater to surge through the creek and flood into surrounding fields. 'The sluice gate typically prevents seawater from entering the creek bordering our fields,' said one farmer. 'But due to wind and abnormal momentum of waves, it failed.' Betalbatim Tenants Association president Santorian Fernandes said such incidents occur annually. 'Many hoteliers have diverted natural water courses during construction. This has changed the way water flows and is now affecting our fields.' He alleged that a trench dug under the guidance of Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas was misplaced. 'That trench should have been dug 200m away. Thondvaddo ward member Ilma Dias said the flooding is due to multiple factors. 'Sand erosion, illegal hotel construction, obstruction of natural water courses, and shack owners and fishermen driving along the beach stretch have all contributed to the worsening situation.' Fernandes said that shack owners often clear shrubbery on sand dunes for space, which leads to erosion and weakens the natural barriers that previously helped prevent seawater intrusion. The farmers are now calling for immediate intervention and long-term solutions to prevent further damage.

Kshirsagar shielding two Beed teachers held in sexual harassment case: Munde; Baseless allegation: NCP (SP)
Pune: The political landscape in Beed is once again heating up — this time over the alleged sexual harassment of a NEET aspirant (17) by two teachers of a tuition centre. Though the Beed city police have arrested the two teachers after a case under Pocso (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) was registered against them, former minister and NCP politician Dhananjay Munde has accused local NCP (SP) MLA Sandeep Kshirsagar of trying to shield the duo. Munde wants chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to form an SIT for a "detailed probe" into the case. Munde, who was under fire after his close associate, Valmik Karad, was arrested in connection with the Massajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh murder case, said: "Those who were holding rallies then and demanding my resignation from the cabinet are all silent on the alleged sexual harassment of the girl. Clinic told to refund fees for failed hair treatment
Ahmedabad: A consumer commission here has ordered a health clinic to refund fees, and awarded Rs 40,000 compensation to a law student after an unsatisfactory 'New Hair' treatment. The compensation was ordered for the clinic's misleading advertisement and unfair trade practice. This case involved an LLB student from Gandhinagar, Shrey Bodakiya, who opted for 'New Hair' treatment with the clinic in Ahmedabad and paid a Rs 53,000 in April 2023. After undergoing treatment, Bodakiya felt that the purpose of the treatment was not served, and the clinic did not offer free sessions in accordance with the promise made earlier once the treatment did not have the desired effect. Bodakiya sued the clinic in June 2024 with the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Ahmedabad (Additional), complaining about the clinic's misleading advertisement and its failure to produce results and to follow its own promise of offering free sessions of treatment.
