KUALA LUMPUR: A security guard was charged at the magistrate's court today with the murder of his friend.
K. Nagentherah, 39, nodded to indicate that he understood the charge after it was read out to him before magistrate S. Arunjothy.
No plea was recorded as murder cases are under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
According to the charge sheet, Nagentherah is accused of murdering K. Kumaran, 44, at 9.23pm by the roadside along Taman Intan Baiduri in Sentul on May 25.
The charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries the death penalty or an imprisonment term of not less than 30 years and not exceeding 40 years and no less than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
Assistant Superintendent Mohd Yunus Daud prosecuted, while Nagentherah was unrepresented.
No bail was granted.
The court set Sept 10 for mention and submission of the post mortem report.
On May 26, Sentul district police Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari said a security guard was killed in a machete attack after arguing with a friend.
He said an argument broke out between the victim and the suspect, who left the scene but returned shortly after to attack the victim with a machete.
Ahmad Sukarno said his men arrived at the scene within three minutes, at which point the victim had already died from his injuries.
Preliminary investigations revealed that prior to the incident, the victim had gone to the location and met with a group of men outside a place of worship.
The group was said to be drinking together when the altercation occurred.
