On Actor Vijay's Poll Alliance Snub, Tamil Nadu BJP's 'Common Goal' Reply

New Delhi: Tamil actor-politician Vijay said 'no' last week to possible alliances with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party or ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam before next year's Assembly election. Vijay - whose fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam will make its electoral debut in 2026 - said he would never join hands with the BJP, which he called "our policy enemies and divisive forces", or Chief Minister MK Stalin's DMK, which he accused of being 'secretly owned" by the former party. The BJP, however, appeared undeterred by Vijay's putdown. On Monday the party's Tamil Nadu unit boss, Nainar Nagenthiran, told reporters the "common goal between us (i.e., the BJP and TVK) is that the DMK should not be in power". "I suggested an alliance based on that shared idea. Ever since the BJP and AIADMK (the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the DMK's arch-rival) reunited... DMK is obviously worried." Chennai: On actor and TVK chief Vijay's recent statement of not allying with any party, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran says, "The common goal between us and Vijay is that the DMK should not be in power. I had suggested unity based on that shared idea. Ever since the… — ANI (@ANI) July 6, 2025 "That is why they push the 'B-team' narrative..." Nagenthiran declared, referring to Tamil Nadu ministers' counterclaims in October last year linking Vijay's TVK and the BJP. Those claims came after the actor said his main 'enemies' were the BJP at the centre and DMK at the state levels. Vijay's entry into Tamil Nadu politics has stirred the pot before the 2026 election. The 51-year-old superstar is not expected to win the 118 seats needed to form the government, but is expected to hoover up enough votes (and seats, maybe) to make it difficult for either the ruling DMK (and its ally, the Congress) or the opposition AIADMK (and the BJP) to do just that. Nagenthiran's appeal to Vijay (last week and today) underscores the BJP's sentiment on this issue; "They (the TVK) should decide who shouldn't come to power and take a call accordingly... they should analyse who would benefit from such a decision (not allying with the BJP)." The BJP's ally, the AIADMK, remains equally welcoming of Vijay; party boss E Palaniswami said Saturday, "All those who wish to oust the DMK from power are welcome to join the alliance." The BJP and the AIADMK were thumped by the DMK in 2021; EPS' party won 66 seats and the BJP just four, compared to the 133 swept by Chief Minister Stalin's party and the Congress' 18. Popular Tamil actor Vijay is his party's chief ministerial candidate (File). The DMK-Congress alliance picked over 45 per cent of the votes. Last year's Lok Sabha election was even more of a thumping; the DMK and Congress won all 31 seats they contested and picked up eight more courtesy smaller allies. The BJP and AIADMK - contesting independently after a temporary break-up - won zero. To stop the DMK from winning a second consecutive term, the BJP and AIADMK need something extra, a boost of popularity and votes that, they hope, will come from Vijay's TVK. Meanwhile, the DMK has been more dismissive of Vijay's 'no'; the party's senior leader, Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi, said, "The announcement may have come as a shock to some... but the people are clear about who their enemies are. All the best, but victory belongs to the DMK." With input from agencies

Coimbatore is turning into den of extremists: BJP

Nainar Nagenthiran COIMBATORE: The BJP on Thursday alleged that Coimbatore is turning into a den of extremists. Reacting to the arrest of the Kovai Arabic College president and faculty members, who were suspected to be ISIS sympathisers, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthiran asked if the city was becoming a haven for terrorist elements. He posted on his X handle that four people were engaged in the recruitment for the ISIS terrorist organisation under the guise of an Arabic College in Coimbatore. "The state govt tried to cover up the terrorist bomb attack near the Kottai Eswaran temple in Coimbatore city as a mere cylinder accident. However, the National Investigation Agency has been continuously arresting members of terrorist organisations from Coimbatore," said Nagenthiran. He added that there were continuous killings of elderly people. Temple idols were being damaged, he said. 'The Dravidian model govt has put the entire area in and around Coimbatore under threat with the movement of terrorist organisations to a shocking extent, putting public safety in question,' he said. He said chief minister M K Stalin should explain why Coimbatore, which should be prosperous and full of industrial and educational resources, was turning into a haven for terrorism with law and order deteriorating. Former BJP state president K Annamalai posted on his X handle: "Just a cylinder blast, they said. It turns out it was a full-blown ISIS-linked radicalisation and recruitment network operating under the nose of the DMK govt, and classrooms as terror factories.' 'While the NIA is working tirelessly to dismantle these terror cells, the DMK continues to downplay threats, brushing off suicide bombing incidents as mere accidents. When appeasement replaces accountability, national security pays the price. TN deserves better,' he posted.

Some DMK allies are in touch with us, claims BJP's Nainar Nagenthiran

BJP State president Nainar Nagenthiran has stirred a political storm by claiming that a few electoral allies of the ruling DMK are in touch with his party as these parties are eager to be with the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance in Tamil Nadu. 'Even though we have lot of time for the election, talks are going on with a few political parties now with the DMK. Some of these parties will come to the NDA fold,' Mr. Nagenthiran told reporters here on Wednesday. When asked to name the political parties that are in touch with the BJP, he said the chances of new parties joining the NDA after ditching the DMK was bright even though he could not say anything concrete at this moment. He asserted that the DMK and the alliance it had stitched with other political parties was 'fragile'. 'If the DMK is strong as being projected, let the party contest the upcoming Assembly on its own. Since the NDA in Tamil Nadu is strong, our alliance partner AIADMK-led rule will be in place in the State after the next Assembly polls,' Mr. Nagenthiran said. When he said the Centre had given over ₹10 lakh crore to Tamil Nadu in the past 11 years apart from the State's GST share from the Union Government, Mr. Nagenthiran was asked to give the breakup about the Centre-funded projects in the State, he said: 'I'll give you the details later'. When asked about the carbon dating researches done by a US university on ancient Tamil civilization and the Centre's inexplicable hesitation in giving due recognition to Keeladi excavations, the BJP president said he would visit the site soon and recommend to the Centre based on his findings. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP are holding Tamil and Tamils in high esteem by propagating its ancientness and culture across the globe,' he said. On the Madras High Court's direction to the Centre to release funds to Tamil Nadu under the Right to Education programme, Mr. Nagenthiran wanted to know why Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who was claiming of managing the fiscal gaps with the State's own resources, was not giving funds for RTE if he was really worried about the education of poor rural students instead of waiting for Central funds. Listing 'achievements' of the Narendra Modi-led Union Government in the past 11 years, Mr. Nagenthiran said the BJP government was according highest priority to the nation's security while building the social, agricultural and health infrastructure in a big way in the country.

No talk has started with PMK yet, it will join NDA soon, says BJP state president Nainar Nagenthiran

Responding to a reporter's question about Thuglak editor S Gurumurthy's meeting with PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss on Thursday, Nagenthiran said, 'Gurumurthy always aims to bring good governance in the country. In order to bring good governance and positivity to TN, we have formed a single largest alliance against DMK. While AIADMK is already on board, PMK will be joining us very soon.' Further, he said during Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Madurai, the party will discuss the poll promises made by DMK government. On HR&CE minister Sekarbabu's alleged comments that permission will not be given to BJP to hold its proposed 'Murugan Manadu' in Madurai, Nagenthiran said his party would approach the court seeking permission.
