Nagercoil Corporation Council passes resolution against proposed site of neo tidel park
The Nagercoil Corporation Council has adopted a resolution opposing the proposed site for the establishment of a neo tidel park in the region, urging that alternative locations within the corporation limits or other government-owned lands in the district be considered. The resolution was adopted at the monthly council meeting held at the corporation office on Monday. After unanimously approving 115 resolutions at the meeting, Ward 37 Councillor Selvam raised concerns over the proposed construction of the park at Anathai Madam ground near S.T. Hindu College. He said the land was originally donated for homeless people in the city and repurposing it for a commercial infrastructure would defeat the intent behind the donation. Several councillors echoed his concerns and voiced their opposition. The councilors also strongly condemned the district administration's proposal to establish the park without consulting the Nagercoil Corporation council, since the land falls under the corporation's jurisdiction. Responding to the issue, Mayor R. Mahesh said the 'Anathai Math' land was one of the few remaining open spaces in the heart of the city, spanning over four acres. The space hosted annual exhibitions, circuses and various government events. 'Moreover, the establishment of the neo tidel park at the proposed site would further increase the traffic congestion in the area.' Mr. Mahesh suggested that the government explore other viable options such as a 30-acre land parcel near Anjugramam, or similar spaces within the corporation boundaries, to avoid disrupting the purpose of the original donation and the area's current utility. At the meeting, the councilors also highlighted the delay in the rollout of the underground drainage system (UGDS) connection to households. They urged swift action to complete UGDS and associated road works, as many areas remained dug up due to stalled drainage projects. Ward 45 Councillor Satheesh mentioned the delay in implementing infrastructural works including replacement of water tanks and street lights. In response, the Mayor instructed the officials to expedite the UGDS implementation and prioritise small-scale infrastructure upgrades that could be completed quickly. He also announced that slaughterhouses would soon be established in each zone and requested the councillors to identify suitable vacant buildings in their areas for the purpose.

Monitoring officer reviews key civic projects in Agasteeswaram taluk
Kanniyakumari District Monitoring Officer Hanish Chabbra inspected the ongoing development works at Agasteeswaram taluk on Thursday. He conducted the inspection in the presence of Kanniyakumari Collector R. Alagumeena, Nagercoil Corporation Commissioner Nishant Krishna and other officials from the district administration. The Monitoring Officer reviewed various sites, including Urban Primary Health centres (UPHCs), corporation's dump yard, coastal hamlets and other development works of the Nagercoil Municipal Corporation. During his visit to the UPHC in Krishnancoil area, he inquired about the availability of doctors and essential medicines at the centre. The department officials were asked about tests for non communicable disease, including high blood pressure and diabetes, under the scheme 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam'. He also visited Valampuraivilai dump yard, located in the heart of a residential area, an issue of critical concern for the city. Everyday tonnes of wastes from households, hotels and markets under the Corporation limits are being dumped at the site. He directed the Corporation officials to give precedence to public health with bio mining and other waste processing activities at the yard, particularly due to close proximity of residential areas, hospitals and markets. He also instructed the Corporation officials to expedite installation of suction systems at the Underground Drainage System facilities at the Pattasalianvilai. He also inspected the construction of 500 metre sea wall along the coastal road of Pottal-Puthanthurai-Pallamthurai at a cost of ₹2.81 crore and the construction of an overhead tank at Thengamputhoor being developed under the AMRUT scheme at a cost of ₹64.68 crore. The tank with a capacity of around 3 lakh litres will benefit 11,049 households in the area that were added recently to the Nagercoil Municipal Corporation limits.

Plea for new revenue division with Nagercoil as headquarters
Kanniyakumari MLA N. Thalavai Sundaram has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, urging establishment of a new revenue division with Nagercoil as headquarters and reorganisation of Agasteeswaram revenue division. In his memorandum, Mr. Sundaram said Agasteeswaram taluk office was currently operating in Nagercoil covering Nagercoil and Kanniyakumari Assembly constituencies. The taluk also included Nagercoil Corporation, Kanniyakumari Municipality, 11 town panchayats and 23 village panchayats under Agasteeswaram and Rajakkamangalam unions. Given the administrative structure, the entire Agasteeswaram taluk with its multiple divisions functioned under a single Tahsildar. The taluk also housed Sri Lankan refugee camps at Perumalpuram and Pazhavilai. With a steady increase in local and migrant population, there was an increasing demand for timely delivery of government services and welfare schemes, he said. Mr. Sundaram proposed the formation of a new revenue division with Nagercoil as its headquarters. It might include Nagercoil and Rajakkamangalam firkas, covering 25 villages spread over 148.23 sq km with a population of 3,89,161. Simultaneously, he suggested reorganising Agasteeswaram taluk with Kanniyakumari as its headquarters. This restructured division might include Kanniyakumari and Suchindram firkas, encompassing 18 villages over 129.32 sq km with a population of 1,61,122. The plea aimed at ensuring faster and more efficient access to developmental benefits, revenue-related services and government schemes for the people.
