Will they, won't they: SP, Azad to join hands for 2027 UP polls?
1 2 3 4 Lucknow: Having missed the chance to contest the 2022 UP assembly polls together, will Azad Samaj Party (ASP) chief and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad ally with Samajwadi Party for the 2027 assembly polls? Of late, the two sides have been maintaining a noticeably soft approach towards each other and abstaining from making any critical remarks against one another like they did after their alliance talks failed in 2022. Political analysts say that in the present political scenario, a tie-up between SP and ASP will better their positions against the BJP. "It will help SP avoid being seen as a party pitted against a Dalit leader – a strategy that restrained SP from attacking the BSP and Mayawati aggressively in the 2022 assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha polls. In fact, reaching out to Azad would help SP position itself as a friend of Dalits," said an analyst. For Azad, the tie-up with SP will help the party steer clear of insinuations that by going solo in 2027 polls it will help the BJP by dividing the Dalit votes. The fact that Azad had tried to team up with Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Ittehad-Ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) in UP ahead of the 2024 LS polls, had already muddied the waters, particularly when Owaisi was dubbed as the B team of the BJP by its political adversaries in UP. In his recent TV interviews, Azad has repeatedly maintained that he enjoys cordial relations with Akhilesh Yadav. Responding to a query on possibility of forging alliance (with SP) in future polls, Azad said his party will contest the 2026 UP panchayat elections independently. He, however, did not sound so categorical about going solo for the 2027 assembly polls. 'The party will take a call on the issue', he said. Azad admitted that he was in touch with Akhilesh but hastened to add that the two often meet when Parliament is in session. At the SP front, senior party functionary Udaiveer Singh recently praised Azad for the hard work he has put in to enjoy the political success that he has achieved till now. The former SP MLC even acknowledged that ideologically Azad was aligned to the INDIA bloc and SP. "But for all practical purposes, Azad was yet to be seen towing a clear political line," he said. Within the SP there is a view that Azad is yet to take on the BJP the way SP and other INDIA bloc partners have. Going by the 'extreme caution' being exercised by the two sides on committing to a likely alliance for the 2027 polls, it appears that neither is in a hurry to make the first move. Possibly neither of them wants a repeat of 2022 when they talked alliance but could not seal the deal. So what exactly happened in 2022?: Azad had met the SP chief and asked for three seats. Azad sought Rampur Maniharan seat in Saharanpur for himself which the SP had already allotted to its then ally — Rashtriya Lok Dal. Akhilesh asked Azad to talk to RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary to spare the seat and in exchange gave a seat to RLD in Mathura district. Azad also sought a seat in Ghaziabad to which Akhilesh agreed. For the third seat, SP had already committed to another contender, Akhilesh assured Azad that they will find a way out. The talks lasted well over 90 minutes. But shortly thereafter, the talks failed after Azad accused Akhilesh of anti-Dalit approach while SP claimed that Azad left the alliance talks inconclusive after he got a call from a leader from another party. With SP putting up its best ever show by bagging 37 seats and Azad making his debut in Parliament in the 2024 LS polls, the spirits were high in both camps till early 2025 until the Milkipur assembly bypoll in Feb 2025 clipped the enthusiasm. The bypoll was necessitated after the sitting MLA Awadhesh Prasad registered a historic win for SP from Faizabad (Ayodhya) LS seat. BJP's Chandra Bhanu Paswan won the Milkipur bypoll with 1.46 lakh votes while SP's Ajit Prasad – Awadesh Prasad's son - bagged 84,477 votes and Azad Samaj Party's Santosh Kumar got 5,459 votes.

‘Don't kill them, they're part of environment': Snake-catcher father-daughter duo
'Main teri dushman, dushman tu mera, main nagin, tu sapera….' Both of them love to hear this Lata Mangeshkar song picturised on Sridevi in the 1986 movie Nagina, and both of them love to catch snakes. Jatinder Kumar, alias Ballu, 43, has studied up to Class 10 and started catching snakes when he was 8; Damini, alias Manasi, 19, is in BA second year and began picking up snakes when she was 15 — against her father's wishes. 'She used to accompany me when I went on my missions. I would catch snakes, and she would make videos. Then, one day, she told me she wanted to catch them as well. I dissuaded her but she did not listen to me,' says Kumar. The father-daughter duo from Rampur village of Himachal Pradesh's Una district have mastered the art of rescuing the reptiles — as well as the people. 'No one taught me how to do it. I learned myself. And I didn't teach my daughter. She learned herself from watching me,' says Kumar. Kumar, who stands six feet tall, and Damini, who has a height of 5 feet 6 inches, have caught snakes of various lengths, the smallest being as long as a hand and the longest being a python measuring 13-14 feet. 'It was a dangerous python roaming around the government school at Dhusara village. We had to struggle a lot to catch it,' says Kumar. Their daredevilry has been awarded by the district administration. 'My father was honoured by Deputy Commissioner Jatin Lal and I was honoured by Lal's predecessor Raghav Sharma,' says Damini, showing pictures of their felicitation. The rainy season, when snake sightings are high, is a busy time for the father-daughter duo. 'We keep getting phone calls till late into the night,' says Kumar. They spring into action the moment a phone call comes, and apply their standard operating procedure. They ask the caller the colour of the snake and tell them dos and don'ts. 'Our brief message is: don't worry, we're coming,' says Kumar, who was regularised as a chowkidar in the DC office two years ago. They ride their bike to the site carrying their devices — steel sticks given by a doctor from Kerala and special long airy boxes made to order. After the rescue, they release the snake in the forest. 'Mostly we collect the snakes at home and release them together,' says Kumar. The monetary reward is saved for the future. 'Whatever money we get we don't spend on ourselves. We deduct the fuel charges and keep the rest for the annual bhandara we organise at our home,' says Kumar. 'When the poor offer us something, we flatly refuse.' They worship Kaal Bhairav, a form of Lord Shiva, and run a YouTube channel under this name. 'We went viral three-four years ago,' says Kumar. The bottomline of every video of theirs is: Don't kill snakes, they are part of the environment. They also advise people to keep their lights outside their houses on at night and seek medical aid in case of a snake bite. 'Anti-venom injections are vital. They should be administered as soon as possible,' says Kumar. 'There are three dangerous species of snake: Common krait, cobra and russell's viper. Of all the snake-bite deaths in Una district, the maximum are caused by the russell's viper.' The father, who is a great fan of Amitabh Bachchan, and the daughter, who has watched all episodes of Naagin serial on Colors, have never killed any snake. They have to scour the unlikeliest places in search of snakes: beds and commodes. Once a snake gave them a tough time due to the walls full of holes, big and small. The end result: they had to pull down the entire hut at Samoor Kalan village. 'I felt very bad for the poor old woman. While coming back, I gave her money,' says Kumar. 'Soon, God came to her rescue. When my video went viral, a property dealer from Mehatpur stepped forward and built a new small house for her. I thanked God from the bottom of my heart for this small mercy.' Kumar has a small dream: To build a snake-bite hospital. 'Many people die of snake bites. They don't get timely help. Local doctors keep consulting me when they get such cases. If I get enough resources, I will definitely build a snake-bite hospital one day and name it after Kaal Bhairav,' says Kumar. 'I love animals and love to save lives.'

Fact Check: Bhim Army supporters' heads shaved, paraded by cops? This is from Rajasthan, not UP
Violence erupted in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj on June 29 after police placed Nagina MP Chandra Shekhar Aazad under house arrest. Aazad was heading to meet the families of victims in two different cases in Kaushami and Karchana when he was stopped by the police. At least 85 people have been arrested for allegedly damaging three police vehicles and other public property in Prayagraj. advertisementNow, a video allegedly showing the Prayagraj police punishing those who led the violence has gone viral. The clip shows policemen parading a group of men whose heads had been the video on X, one person wrote, 'Look what Baba's Police have done with the blue hooligans who went on a rampage after getting instigated to take law and order in their own hand in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj. Where is the Kingpin?' India Today Fact Check, however, found that this video is from June 2, when police officers paraded culprits accused of planning to loot a petrol pump in Baran, Rajasthan. It has nothing to do with the Prayagraj ProbeWe noticed the watermark of an Instagram account, '@virendrasingh6513', in the viral video. We found that this account had posted a longer version of the clip on June 2. The caption of the post stated that the Baran police arrested 12 people for allegedly planning to loot a petrol pump. Baran is a district in Rajasthan. advertisement View this post on Instagram A post shared by Virendra Singh (@virendrasingh6513)We then found multiple news reports about this incident. According to an NDTV report, 12 people were arrested in Baran for planning to loot petrol pumps in areas under the jurisdiction of two different police stations. The police shaved off the heads of the alleged culprits, who could be seen apologising with folded hands, and parading the night of May 31, Kishanganj SHO Vinod Kumar's team arrested five people, namely Itihas Ali, Ashiq, Mohammed Khalid, Shahrukh, and Raju Nayak, for planning the loot. Seven other members of the group — Deepak Nayak, Lekhraj Yadav, Rohit Yadav, Sonu Yadav, Shailendra Mali, Lalit Yogi, and Deepak Nagar — were arrested in Anta city of the arrests, police also seized pistols, live cartridges, a knife, and an iron rod, among other things. On June 2, the police shaved the heads of all the accused in the case and paraded them on the up culprits, also from RajasthanAnother video making the rounds on social media allegedly showed Bhim Army activists arrested, walking with bandages on their heads and arms. Those sharing the clip claimed they were roughed up by the Prayagraj police for the June 29 violence. This video, however, is from June 4 and shows a gang that used to extort money from businessmen in the name of gangster Goldy Brar in Sri Ganganagar, is, thus, clear that two old videos from Rajasthan were falsely shared in connection with the Prayagraj violence.- EndsTrending Reel Want to send us something for verification? Police claim Karchhana violence was pre-planned
1 2 Prayagraj: Claiming that the Sunday's Karchhana violence by Azad Samaj Party workers was pre-planned, police on Tuesday launched a manhunt for two key operatives who were accused of instigating the mob. Two special police teams were also dispatched for their arrest. Meanwhile, normalcy was restored in the violence-hit Karchhana, and senior cops were maintaining a close watch. So far, 74 people have been arrested. Cops are currently conducting a series of raids to nab others and asserted that stringent action would be taken against them. "We have compiled enough evidence to nail down miscreants involved in Sunday's violence," a senior official said. The police action follows Sunday's incident wherein supporters of Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad went on a rampage for over two hours, damaging about a dozen vehicles and pelting police with stones. They accused police of not allowing the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) chief to meet the family of a Dalit man allegedly burnt to death in Karchana and that of a "rape survivor" in the nearby Kaushambi district. The mob damaged three police vehicles, and cops resorted to baton charge to disperse them. About half a dozen persons were reportedly injured in the clash. Police, after registering an FIR against 53 named and over 500 unknown persons, roped in 15 teams to ensure the arrest of troublemakers.
