No pucca roads in layouts, NIT floats Rs57L tender for patch work, repairs
1 2 Nagpur: Even as the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) has floated fresh tenders worth over Rs57 lakh for patch work and road repairs in authorised and unauthorised layouts in south and north Nagpur, residents continue to reel under pathetic road conditions, with several areas waterlogged after heavy rain and non-existent approach roads. On Tuesday, NIT published a tender notice, which includes works worth Rs20.15 lakh for repairs and patch work in South Nagpur and another Rs37.49 lakh for road repairs in North Nagpur. The repairs and patch works will be done with metal and murum in both authorised and unauthorised layouts over six months. The situation remains grim on the ground. At Swami Nagar in Nari, North Nagpur, the condition is deplorable. "Khup traas aahe bhau (It's too much trouble). Water has entered our homes. Children can't go to school. It's become impossible to step out," said resident Sachin Ingle, whose flooded street reflects the extent of civic apathy despite repeated allocations. Former Congress Corporator from North Nagpur Manoj Sangole questioned the utility of recurring expenditures. "Earlier too, a Rs1 crore tender was floated. Every year crores are wasted. NIT must finalise the legal status of these layouts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like My family & I lost S$500,000 to a scam. Taking responsibility for it was hard, but it helped me grow CNA Read More Undo Builders sold these plots and left, and now residents are paying the price for no development," Sangole told TOI. He alleged systemic injustice, saying, "There are over 1,900 layouts now, and 572 have been legalised. What about the rest? These layouts must be rehabilitated and granted permanent status. NIT either needs to be dissolved or its trustees must take accountability." Residents in layouts under Prabhag areas and inner pockets of North Nagpur continue to suffer. "There are dozens of pockets where residents are living without roads, drainage or basic services," Sangole said, demanding urgent attention from both state and local bodies. "The situation is no different in areas in south Nagpur," said former corporator Vijay Zalke. The problem is particularly dire in Gunthewari layouts that were sold decades ago but never received basic civic amenities. Many continue to rely on muddy lanes that get completely cut off during monsoon, trapping people inside their homes. A senior NIT official admitted the lack of amenities, especially roads in authorised and unauthorised layouts. Citing an example, the official said only 10% of residents of authorised layouts pay the development charges to NIT. "So, it's very difficult for the civic agency to provide roads and other basic civic amenities," the official said.

Khopde takes charge as NIT trustee; vows to prioritise Gunthewari regularisation
1 2 Nagpur: Senior BJP leader and four-time MLA from East Nagpur, Krishna Khopde, on Monday took charge as trustee of Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT). The appointment was celebrated with great enthusiasm by party workers and supporters, who gathered in large numbers at the NIT office for the formal oath-taking ceremony. Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who attended the function as the chief guest, hailed Khopde's appointment, calling it a step that will benefit the common people. He said Khopde's proven track record of working for the underprivileged and transforming East Nagpur into a development model made him the right choice for the post. The event was attended by BJP city president Dayashankar Tiwari, NIT chairman Sanjay Meena, former MLAs Anil Sole, Vikas Kumbhare, Sudhakar Deshmukh, and several ex-corporators and party officials. In his address, Khopde thanked the party leadership and vowed to focus on regularising unauthorised layouts under the Gunthewari Act, 2020. "We've already provided land rights to many slum dwellers through NIT. Under the leadership of CM Devendra Fadnavis and Union minister Nitin Gadkari, we ensured ownership rights to thousands. Now, we will give top priority to the registration and regularisation of plots in all unauthorised layouts," Khopde said.

Sewage Chokes Alankar Colony; NIT Yet To Offer Permanent Fix
1 2 Nagpur: For the past one-and-a-half years, residents of Alankar Colony — mostly senior citizens and retired professionals — have been grappling with severe sewage overflow and blocked drains. The issue stems from an overburdened sewer line originally designed for 65 families but now servicing over double the load following the construction of three new residential buildings, with a fourth underway. Locals say the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) never laid a proper underground drainage network in the colony, worsening the problem. "For 16 years, there was never any issue because the number of buildings was fewer," said T Malankar, a long-time resident. "Our layout was planned around 15 years ago, and the drainage system sufficed then. But with the new constructions, it's now under immense pressure." Nanak Chabrani, another resident, described the impact on daily life. "I avoid opening my door in the evening as it faces the sewer, which is now a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The stench is unbearable. I feel embarrassed to invite anyone over." Residents have repeatedly complained about the situation but allege that NIT officials have been unresponsive. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "How can Nagpur be called a Smart City when basic civic infrastructure like drainage is missing?" questioned Mayuri Sharma. "Last month, sewer water entered my home and reached the kitchen. We've filed several complaints, but nothing concrete has been done." With civic bodies failing to act, residents were forced to take temporary measures themselves. One local arranged for a JCB machine through an acquaintance to dig makeshift drainage paths. But with monsoon intensifying, fears of flooding inside homes loom large. When contacted, NIT junior engineer Rambhau Patil said the matter was being treated on priority. "A joint survey with a private firm has been conducted, and a permanent solution is being worked out," he said. "The original contractor had left the sewer line exposed 15 years ago. A proposal to lay a new pipeline is in progress. In the meantime, NMC has been instructed to clean the area."

Super speciality hospital to come up on NNSR land
Nagpur: The Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) on Tuesday informed the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court that it has completed all procedures for allotting a public utility plot leased to Nagpur Nagrik Sahakari Rugnalaya (NNSR) to a charitable trust for establishing a multi and super speciality hospital. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It requested closure of the PIL that triggered judicial scrutiny of the allotment process. A division bench comprising Justices Nitin Sambre and Sachin Deshmukh then disposed of the plea while taking the affidavit on record. HC was hearing a suo motu PIL earlier filed by late Bhalchandra Subhedar, one of the founding members of the Nagpur Civic Cooperative Hospital Society, through counsel Akshay Sudame. It sought the reopening of NNSR, which remained closed since 2010, with emphasis on developing organ transplant services for the region. Sangita Jachak pleaded for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). NIT stated that Maharashtra govt, through a July 14 resolution, granted final approval to allot a plot at Mouza Lendra, measuring 62,888 sqft on North Ambazari Road to Dr Aabaji Thatte Seva Aur Anusandhan Sanstha. The trust, which also runs the National Cancer Institute (NCI), was declared the highest bidder in a public tender process and scored 95.10/100 in a quality and cost-based evaluation. The plot, meant for a charitable hospital project, had a base premium of Rs10.63 crore, but the winning trust quoted Rs11 crore. The govt earlier relaxed the standard 50% premium requirement to 25% of the ready reckoner rate under Rule 26 of the NIT Land Disposal Rules, 1983. NIT executive officer Rasika Kawade, who submitted the affidavit through counsel Girish Kunte, said following the court's directives, the NIT board passed a resolution on May 14 to proceed with the allotment based on recommendations from an expert committee constituted by the court. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "All procedural requirements as per Rule 5 and Rule 20 of the NIT Land Disposal Rules have been duly complied with. Only the final step of lease execution and handing over possession remains," she stated. The tender was published on June 7 in local dailies and online portals. Two charitable institutions — Thatte trust and Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education & Research — submitted bids. A joint tender committee comprising state nominees, NIT officials, and members from the court-appointed expert panel shortlisted Thatte trust after technical and financial evaluation. On June 25, NIT submitted the final proposal to the state govt. The govt cleared the file on July 14, directing NIT to recover the quoted amount and incidental charges and report back to the court before issuing the lease. The NIT now seeks the court's permission to proceed with the final allotment and close the PIL, which was initiated following concerns raised by original petitioner Dr Subhedar over the legality and transparency of past land disposals involving public plots.
