70 years of fun learning for Playpen

PLAYPEN Pre-school in Glenwood recently celebrated 70 years of educating and nurturing young minds that later in life go on to make a difference in the world. The school, which also houses Grade R learners, was established in 1955 by Nan Duff. Since then, Playpen Pre-school has flourished and welcomed scores of learners through their doors, with Tammy Erasmus taking over the reins in 2001. She said a few changes have taken place over the years. 'It progressively developed into a Nursery School and was called Playpen Nursery School,' said Erasmus. 'All the staff became qualified early childhood development (ECD) assistants and teachers and the name changed to Playpen Pre-school & Grade R.' She said the school was opened by Duff, with the purpose of serving the community. 'The school has survived many obstacles, including Covid-19 and we are still going strong, by the grace of God. We are truly blessed and grateful that the primary schools in the area work together with our little pre-school and are always willing to give us moral support,' said Erasmus. Erasmus said the mission is to provide an environment that is stimulating, nurturing and supportive to young children, where they can discover that they are important and where learning can be fun. 'Our goal is to help your child develop a positive self-concept, with a strong foundation for lifelong learning and an inspiration to excel through a challenging curriculum focused on academics as well as social emotional development in a safe, happy, homely environment,' added the school principal. The school celebrated this milestone with a party which culminated with learners and staff enjoying a delicious cake and snacks.
