Noida man loses ₹15.5 lakh in sim swap fraud; police launch probe

A 50-year-old software developer from Noida's Sector 11 lost ₹15.50 lakh in a SIM swap scam carried out through six transactions between July 20 and 27, police said on Tuesday. A case has been registered at the Cybercrime Branch police station against an unidentified suspect. The fraudster, having gained control of Narang's mobile number, initiated six transactions totalling ₹ 15.50 lakh. Narang was alerted via email when someone attempted to add new payees to his Unified Payments Interface (UPI). (Representational image) The victim, Rajneesh Narang, was allegedly tricked into converting his physical SIM card into an eSIM by a caller posing as a telecom service representative. According to the police, Narang received a call on July 18 from an unknown number, during which he was told that switching to an eSIM would improve network connectivity. Police said the caller instructed Narang to complete further steps via email after the SIM was not activated even 24 hours later. 'The caller informed me that I needed to do mail confirmation by sending SMS for activation, which we did, and after that I realised that it was a fraud call, as my mobile did not activate,' the FIR read. Investigators found that Narang had unknowingly entered a 16-digit EID (Embedded Identity Document) code provided by the scammer into the official app of his telecom provider. 'As Narang entered the 32-digit number on an official application while processing eSIM, his SIM card was swapped to the suspect's device,'said Ranjeet Singh, station house officer, Cybercrime Branch. To be sure, e-SIM swap scams are a type of mobile fraud where scammers persuade network providers to transfer a victim's phone number to a device they control. Once the switch is done, they can intercept OTPs, access UPI accounts, and impersonate the victim online. The fraudster, having gained control of Narang's mobile number, initiated six transactions totalling ₹15.50 lakh. Narang was alerted via email when someone attempted to add new payees to his Unified Payments Interface (UPI). He then contacted the bank, disconnected the mobile number, and blocked the SIM—but not before the transactions were completed. Police said the case was registered under sections of cheating and personation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act. Further investigation is underway.

AAP slams BJP over trash dump site at Majlis Park

NEW DELHI: Even as the BJP's 'four-engine government' touts its vision of a world-class Delhi, a fresh garbage crisis is brewing—this time near Majlis Park Metro Station in the Civil Lines zone. On Saturday, AAP's Leader of Opposition in the MCD, Ankush Narang, visited the site and slammed the BJP for creating what he called Delhi's fourth garbage mountain instead of eliminating the existing ones. Narang alleged that MCD waste, silt, and construction debris are being dumped at this new site under the direction of BJP Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh and Civil Lines Zonal Chairman Gulab Singh Rathore, both of whom represent the area. 'The stench is unbearable. Locals are suffering while BJP leaders click photos near old landfills under their so-called cleanliness drive,' Narang said. He mocked the justification given by local BJP leaders, and reportedly called the site part of a new 'CM Kooda Yojana.' 'In one month, this heap has grown 8–9 feet tall. Is this their idea of beautification?' he asked, adding that the dump threatens public health, especially during monsoon, due to rising mosquito-borne diseases. The site, previously cleared by the AAP government for a public park, now lies buried under trash, he added. Given its proximity to the Outer Ring Road and the Metro station, Narang sarcastically asked if the BJP plans to turn it into a 'heritage site.' The AAP leaded vowed to raise the issue in the legislative assembly and write to the chief minister, Mayor, and MCD Commissioner demanding urgent action.

Opposition blames MCD for new dumpyard near Majlis Park metro station

New Delhi: The Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Ankush Narang, visited a site near Majlis Park metro station in the Civil Lines zone, allegedly used for dumping waste, on Saturday. An AAP councillor claimed that the site was turned into a landfill by the MCD. "The entire MCD waste is being dumped at this new site and the development is known to the senior officials. The stench from this heap has made life unbearable for locals," said Narang, accusing the BJP of betraying Delhiites who were promised a cleaner and livable city. He was joined by former AAP councillor from the area, Ajay Sharma, and other leaders during the inspection. "BJP used to talk about removing the three existing garbage mountains in Delhi. But instead of eliminating them, it has created a fourth one. Garbage, silt, construction and demolition waste are all being dumped here. MCD is no longer sending waste to the existing sites — it is building a new dump yard altogether," he added, pointing out that the zone comes under the jurisdiction of mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, who is also the area councillor. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Chrissy Metz Is So Skinny Now And Looks Gorgeous Undo You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi He announced that he would write letters to the chief minister, mayor, and MCD commissioner to demand the immediate removal of this fourth garbage mountain. "In just one month, this site has piled up waste 8 to 9 feet high," he declared. Raising further concerns, Narang noted the proximity of the dump to the Outer Ring road and the metro station. An MCD official informed that the site belongs to PWD and it is dumping the silt here. Local junk dealers are also dumping their waste. "There might be municipal waste also being dumped here, but that is little in quantity. We are dumping our silt waste at the landfill, regular receipts are issued for them and we are keeping a regular track on its dumping," said the official.

Sports Bill will bring transparency and reform to federations: Gagan Narang

New Delhi: Olympic medallist-turned-sports administrator Gagan Narang believes the National Sports Governance Bill will usher in much-needed transparency and reforms in the functioning of National Sports Federations (NSFs). Olympic medallist-turned-sports administrator Gagan Narang believes the National Sports Governance Bill will usher in transparency. (Getty Images) 'It's a forward-looking, futuristic bill that can significantly transform the sporting ecosystem in the country. It will help athletes perform better by allowing them to focus with the right mindset,' Narang told HT. A key feature of the Bill is the creation of a National Sports Tribunal, intended to resolve disputes involving federations. Currently, there are multiple sports-related litigations across various courts in India, which has become a major administrative bottleneck. 'The Bill will address all legal issues plaguing federations. Also, if an athlete has a dispute, there will be a resolution committee in place. That means athletes can focus on their sport without the burden of legal battles,' said Narang, the bronze medallist in 10m air rifle at the 2012 London Olympics. After a long decorated career where he won an Olympic medal, a World Championships medal (2010, Munich,) and secured multiple podium finishes at Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, Narang has switched to sports administration. He serves as vice-president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and is also a member of the IOA's Athletes' Commission. In addition, he is part of the Mission Olympic Cell, which approves programmes for the country's top elite athletes. Having taken on multiple roles in sports administration, Narang believes that most issues can be resolved with the right intent and perspective. With his growing experience, he is quickly developing key administrative skills. Narang emphasised that the Bill's transparency measures, including making NSFs accountable under Right to Information (RTI) Act, are a step in the right direction. 'The governance structure will be clearer and more accountable. Most importantly, disputes will no longer derail an athlete's career.' He acknowledged that implementing structural change at the federation level will be challenging, but necessary. 'The key is to establish a governance framework. Once that's in place, we can build around it. Change won't be easy, but it's crucial for the betterment of Indian sport. Implementing these reforms is a step in the right direction.' He welcomed the Bill's provisions for grievance redressal mechanisms and inclusion of athlete and women representatives in the executive councils of federations. 'Athlete representation on executive boards will ensure athlete-centric programs. Women's participation is vital too — not just athletes, but also women coaches and administrators. The grievance redressal mechanism will finally have a structured form.' 'The government is respecting the autonomy of federations while ensuring ethics, fairness, and accountability. It strikes the right balance between freedom and responsibility. Our sports minister (Mansukh Mandaviya) spent long hours with top federation officials to discuss India's sporting vision and it reflects the government's serious intent and commitment to long-term development in sports,' he added. Narang said the Bill could play a foundational role as India prepares its bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. 'This is our moment. The Bill provides a platform to build the kind of governance infrastructure needed to support our athletes and help them perform at their best on the world stage.' On the recent resolution of internal differences within the IOA, Narang expressed optimism. 'It's a very good restart. Whether it was the Asian Games, the successful conduct of two National Games, or preparation for the Paris Olympics — the IOA always presented a united front. There were never any differences when it came to sports and athlete development. Whatever minor differences existed have now been resolved.' 'A little difference of opinion is healthy in any democratic setup. Now it's time to move forward and focus on the work ahead of us.' As a member of IOA Athletes Commission, Narang is gearing up to launch various educational programmes for athletes.

SharePoint zero-day flaw exploited as over 9,000 servers at risk

Cybersecurity experts have raised fresh alarms following reports of active exploitation targeting Microsoft SharePoint servers worldwide. The scale and sophistication of the attacks, which began to surface in detailed research at the end of last week, are causing concern among organisations that rely on the popular collaboration platform for critical information infrastructure. The vulnerability at the centre of the incident, now assigned as CVE-2025-53770, affects a wide cross-section of SharePoint Server deployments. Research from Eye Security first brought attention to what it described as "active, large-scale exploitation," driven by a zero-day weakness identified within a pair of vulnerabilities collectively known as ToolShell. Successful exploitation allows attackers to extract the MachineKey configuration details from vulnerable servers - exposing both the validationKey and decryptionKey, which are crucial to securing authentication tokens and encrypted data. This critical information, once in criminal hands, can be weaponised. As Satnam Narang, Senior Staff Research Engineer at Tenable, explained, "Attackers were able to exploit the flaw, now identified as CVE-2025-53770, to steal MachineKey configuration details from vulnerable SharePoint Servers. These details can be used by attackers to create specially crafted requests that could be used to gain unauthenticated remote code execution." Narang noted that the consequences for affected organisations may be severe, with broad implications for data integrity and security across industry sectors. Indicators of compromise are already being circulated among security teams. Organisations are being urged to check for evidence of unauthorised access, with one telltale sign being the sudden creation of files named " on vulnerable servers, possibly under other extensions. The scope of exposure is significant, with estimates suggesting over 9,000 externally accessible SharePoint servers are potentially at risk. These systems are deployed globally by enterprises, government entities, and a range of other organisations relying on SharePoint for document management and collaboration. Patching efforts have commenced in earnest. Microsoft began distributing fixes late on 20 July, prioritising SharePoint Server 2019 and SharePoint Subscription Edition. A remedy for SharePoint Server 2016 remains pending but is expected imminently. Narang advised, "We strongly advise organisations to begin conducting incident response investigations to identify potential compromise; otherwise, apply the available patches and review the mitigation instructions provided by Microsoft." Andrew Obadiaru, Chief Information Security Officer at offensive security firm Cobalt, warned that the speed and depth of zero-day exploitation leaves little margin for delay or complacency. "Zero-day vulnerabilities in widely deployed platforms like SharePoint are a goldmine for attackers because they provide immediate, scalable access to high-value environments. "The challenge isn't just patching - it's that attackers typically implant persistence mechanisms within hours, ensuring long-term footholds. Defence strategies need to assume breach and validate controls through proactive testing, including red teaming and continuous pentesting, to uncover weaknesses before adversaries do. In today's threat landscape, reactive security alone is a losing game." Obadiaru's remarks echo growing industry consensus that traditional perimeter defences are proving insufficient in the face of increasingly sophisticated and rapid cyber threats. Security teams are being encouraged to revisit their incident response and detection protocols, embracing a proactive security posture and preparing for the possibility that attackers may already be inside their networks. For now, the advice from the security community is clear: immediate action is essential. Organisations are urged to initiate incident response processes, apply available patches without delay, and review configuration settings for any signs of compromise. Vigilance and proactive testing will be the defining factors in limiting the fallout from yet another high-profile zero-day targeting widely used enterprise software.
