Murder of Punjab gangster's mother: Multiple police teams on trail of killers

Jun 28, 2025 02:50 PM IST Police have formed multiple teams and were scanning CCTV footage to identify and arrest the assailants of jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's mother and cousin in Batala on Thursday night, officials said on Saturday. Punjab Police have formed multiple teams and are scanning CCTV footage to identify and arrest the assailants of jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's mother Harjit Kaur, who was shot dead in Batala on Thursday night. (File photo) Bhagwanpuria's mother Harjit Kaur, 52, and cousin Karanvir Singh, 29, were grievously injured after two motorcycle-borne assailants fired on their car outside their rented accommodation on Qadian Road in Batala. While Karanvir was declared dead at the Batala Civil Hospital, Harjit Kaur was referred to a hospital in Amritsar, but she succumbed to the bullet injuries. A police officer said on Saturday that efforts were on by multiple police teams to arrest the assailants and added that CCTV footage from nearby areas was being scanned. Harjit Kaur, who hails from Bhagwanpur, had been living in Batala in a rented house for the past two years. In an unverified social media post, Bhagwanpuria's rival gang claimed responsibility for the attack, indicating that Karanvir was the target. Asked about the claim, police parried the question saying investigation was underway. In March, Bhagwanpuria was detained by the Narcotics Control Bureau under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act and shifted from central jail in Bathinda to Assam's Silchar jail. Bhagwanpuria was already in police custody for his role in the murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala on May 29, 2022.

Gangs of Punjab: Who is gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria? Accused in Sidhu Moose Wala murder; friend-turned foe of Lawrence Bishnoi

Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, a notorious gangster, is currently in jail. His mother was recently killed, allegedly by the Bambiha gang. Bhagwanpuria has a long criminal history, including drug trafficking and murder cases. He also has connections to international criminal networks. Police are investigating the recent killing and the claims made by the Bambiha gang. NEW DELHI: From operating drug syndicates from jail to being named in the Sidhu Moose Wala murder case, gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, whose mother was shot dead by the 'rival Bambiha gang' on Thursday night, has emerged as one of Punjab's most notorious criminals in recent years. Who is Jaggu Bhagwanpuria? Born Jagdeep Singh, the gangster takes his alias from his native village, Bhagwanpur, in Gurdaspur. He is currently lodged in Assam's Silchar Central Jail after being detained under the stringent PIT-NDPS Act. Since 2012, Bhagwanpuria has been booked in 128 cases, including high-profile murders, extortion, Arms Act violations and 13 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Despite his incarceration, authorities said he continued to operate drug and extortion networks through smuggled mobile phones and encrypted communication, with links traced to operatives in Pakistan, Canada and the United States. Rift with Lawrence Bishnoi Once considered an ally of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, also named in the Moose Wala murder case, the two are believed to have turned rivals after a violent gang clash in Tarn Taran jail in February 2023. Following the fallout, Bishnoi was shifted to a jail in Gujarat in August 2023. In March 2025, following multiple alerts from the Narcotics Control Bureau, the Centre's PIT-NDPS wing directed Bhagwanpuria's transfer to Silchar jail in Assam to sever his influence within Punjab jails. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This 2025 RAV4 Might Be Toyota's Best Yet TheFactualist Undo The move mirrored similar detentions of three other alleged drug lords — Akshay Chhabra, Jaspal Singh alias Goldy, and Balwinder Singh alias Billa Havelian — who were also moved to Assam as part of efforts to dismantle in-prison smuggling networks. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav earlier announced the arrest of five members of the Bhagwanpuria and Amritpal Batth gangs. Police claimed to have foiled a planned target killing and seized multiple weapons — including a US-made Glock 9mm pistol and .32 bore firearms — allegedly supplied through Bhagwanpuria's channels. The accused were said to be involved in several previous gang-related cases. Mother, aide gunned down in Batala According to Senior Superintendent of Police, Batala, Suhail Qasim Mir, Harjit Kaur and Karanvir were returning home from Tarn Taran on Thursday night after attending a court hearing when they were attacked near their residence. Unidentified assailants on a motorcycle fired indiscriminately at their vehicle. Karanvir, son of an Assistant Sub-Inspector, died on the spot. Harjit Kaur sustained multiple bullet injuries and was declared brought dead at the hospital. Police have since launched a search operation. No arrests had been made till Friday evening, with the investigation being handled at a high level. Bambiha gang claims responsibility Soon after the attack, a social media post went viral in which Haryana-based gangsters Prabhu Dasuwal and Kaushal Chaudhary — believed to be linked to the Bambiha gang, claimed responsibility. The post stated that Karanvir was the intended target as he allegedly handled operations for Jaggu, including managing fugitives, weapons, and funds. The post reads: 'We — Doni Bal Billa Manga, Prabhu Dasuwal, and Kaushal Chaudhary — take responsibility for Karan's murder in Batala. He used to handle all of Jaggu's operations... Today, by killing him, we have avenged our brother Gore Baryar... From now on, if any of our brothers are wrongfully killed, be ready to pay the price. Anyone else who speaks against us should also be prepared.' Police have not yet verified the authenticity of the claim or confirmed the involvement of the Bambiha gang.

Jailed gangster Bhagwanpuria's mother shot dead in Punjab's Batala

Notorious jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's mother Harjit Kaur was shot dead by two bike-borne assailants in Punjab's Batala town, police said on Friday. Bhagwanpuria is also an accused in the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Kaur was going somewhere in an SUV when the goons came on a bike and opened fire on Thursday night near her house in the Urban Estate area, killing her and her driver Karanvir Singh. She was referred to a hospital in Amritsar, but she succumbed to the bullet injuries, a police official said. The Bambiha gang has claimed responsibility for the crime. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had arrested Bhagwanpuria under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act. In March, he was shifted from the high-security Bathinda Central Jail to Silchar Jail in Assam as authorities were suspecting that detained gangsters were running drug syndicates from Punjab's prisons. Bhagwanpuria, against whom 128 FIRs have been registered in Punjab and other states, was arrested in a murder case in 2015 and, since then, has been lodged in several jails, previously in Punjab. In the singer Moosewala's murder case, it was Bhagwanpuria and gangster Lawrence Bishnoi who had hatched a conspiracy to kill him. However, later, both fell apart. Bhagwanpuria, a native of Gurdaspur district, is considered the most dreaded gangster of Punjab after Bishnoi and has more than five cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for hatching conspiracies to disturb communal harmony in Punjab. He is facing 15 cases of arms and drug smuggling. On his shifting to Assam, the NCB had said then that Bhagwanpuria was moved out of Punjab as he had 'established linkages' with international operatives in Canada, the US and Pakistan. His relocation was a must to disrupt the ecosystem, facilitating continued criminal activities, it added.

Puducherry LG flags drug addiction among 23 per cent of government school students, cites survey

PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan on Thursday said 23% of school students in Puducherry, particularly those in government institutions, are addicted to drugs, citing a recent survey. 'We are in a dangerous situation. A survey shows that 23% of students in Puducherry are involved in drug abuse, especially government school students. Even parents are struggling to address the issue,' he said, speaking at the 'Routhiram Pazhagu – Drug-Free Puducherry' awareness walk organised by Bharathi Foundation. He warned of a strong police crackdown on drug peddlers and urged students to take responsibility for themselves and their peers. 'You must protect yourselves and also guide your friends. You have the ability to build a healthy and prosperous India,' he told them. The walk was organised in connection with International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and saw participation from hundreds of students, particularly those involved in the National Welfare Project. The event aimed to raise awareness and encourage student involvement in fighting drug abuse.
