When it was ‘harrowing' for Naseeruddin Shah to dance alongside Mithun Chakraborty: ‘Never felt at home, first time I became aware of split personality'
Naseeruddin Shah celebrates his 75th birthday today. The actor is best known for his nuanced performances on stage and being one of the harbingers of parallel cinema in the 1970s. However, Shah has also done a fair bit of work in mainstream Hindi cinema, some of which he's not entirely proud of, as he's confessed multiple times over the years. For instance, the first time Shah had to dance in a film was in Shakti Samanta's 1980 romantic thriller Khwab, alongside Mithun Chakraborty, well known for his impeccable dancing skills. 'Believe me, it was harrowing! The first time I had to dance was next to Mithun Chakraborty, yeah. Enough said,' said the actor. In the interview with Huffpost in 2020, Naseeruddin Shah recalled the tough time he had picking on those dance moves. 'I never felt at home! It was the first time I became aware of a split personality,' said Shah, adding, 'I never felt that way while on the sets of a film with 50 dancers and 500 extras and everybody tittering when you do a step wrong.' The actor recalled 'frantically rehearsing' the dance moves, even before Mithun Chakraborty entered the set, when he tripped and fell. A background dancer came up to him and said, 'Poor boy! This is your first film, isn't it?' Shah apologized to her and others for holding them up, but she encouraged him to try again. 'She was sweet, yeah, but it sank my spirits further,' said Shah. Khwab was definitely not Naseeruddin Shah's first film. He'd already registered his presence with Shyam Benegal's movies like his debut film Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976), Bhumika (1977), and Junoon (1979). 'I'd usually be on a shoot with Shyam, Ketan (Mehta), Vidhu (Vinod Chopra), Saeed (Mirza), and Kundan (Shah). We were all friends and it was always a relaxed atmosphere in which we shot those films. I had not been with all of these mainstream guys,' confessed Shah. The actor revealed that he shot for another one of his seminal films, Sai Paranjpye's Sparsh (1980) right after filming for Khwab. 'In fact the money I made from Khwab helped me buy a car. So I drove to Delhi in that car and did Sparsh. The learning here really was the fact that an actor's abilities are just not enough. It's ironic that an actor depends on so many inputs from others. This was the bingo moment for me,' argued Shah. Also Read — Naseeruddin Shah writes on Diljit Dosanjh controversy: I feel no need to prove anything, including my patriotism Naseeruddin Shah used the same argument to defend his varying performances in Shekhar Kapur's 1983 cult relationship drama Masoom and Eshmayeel Shroff's 1982 romantic drama Dil… Akhir Dil Hai, which he shot for at the same time as well. 'I was playing the romantic lead in front of the gorgeous Rakhee and Parveen Babi. I sang songs and was in bed with both of these lovely ladies. I shot half of Dil… Akhir Dil Hai, went to Delhi and shot Masoom, came back and finished the former. It was a continuous journey. And yet you can see the difference in the quality of performance. I look like an absolute novice! Like a guy who does not know the first thing about acting in Dil… Akhir Dil Hai,' said Shah.

'Father Refused To Go To Pakistan': Naseeruddin Shah After Standing Up For Diljit Dosanjh
Last Updated: Amid backlash over his support for Diljit Dosanjh in the Sardaar Ji 3 row, Naseeruddin Shah says he doesn't need to prove his patriotism to anyone. Naseeruddin Shah has been in the headlines after coming out in support of Diljit Dosanjh over Sardaar Ji 3, which stars Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. Naseer, who had posted on Facebook in support of Dosanjh, has now stated that he doesn't have to prove his love for this country to anyone. In a heartfelt opinion piece for The Indian Express, Naseeruddin Shah shared that his father refused to go to Pakistan with his brother and was quite certain about staying back. He wrote, 'I was born in India into the fifth generation of a Muslim family, my wife into an even older Hindu one, and we hope our children can be a combination of the best of both. My father refused to go to Pakistan when his brothers left; he was certain India had a future for us, just as I feel it does for my offspring. This is a dream that cannot be abandoned." Earlier, Naseeruddin had come forward to back Diljit, who has been receiving flak for his association with a Pakistani co-star. 'I STAND FIRMLY WITH DILJIT," Naseeruddin had written. 'The dirty tricks deptt of Jumla Party has been awaiting a chance to attack him. They think they've got it at last. He was not responsible for the casting of the film — the director was." He continued, 'But no one knows who he is, whereas Diljit is known the world over, and he agreed to the cast because his mind is not poisoned. What these goons want is to put an end to personal interaction between the people of India and Pakistan. I have close relatives and some dear friends there, and no one can stop me from meeting them or sending them love whenever I feel like it. And my response to those who will say 'Go to Pakistan' is 'GO TO KAILASA'." Later, when his post was taken down and netizens believed he had indeed removed it, the actor clarified, 'I have NOT deleted my post about Diljit Dosanjh. I don't care a fiddler's fart for backlash." Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit also reacted to Naseeruddin's remarks. Speaking to ANI, he said, 'We are not surprised, not shocked, by Naseeruddin Shah's response to Diljit Dosanjh's entire episode. The educated, versatile actor, senior person in the industry, calling us goons proves the frustration and kind of restlessness of Naseeruddin Shah." First Published:

Naseeruddin Shah Breaks Silence On Facebook Post Supporting Diljit Dosanjh: "Taken Down, Not Deleted"
New Delhi: Naseeruddin Shah has reacted to the deleted Facebook post, supporting Diljit Dosanjh. On June 30, the film veteran uploaded an elaborate note backing the Punjabi singer-actor over his collaboration with Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in Sardaar Ji 3. Hours later, it was deleted, sparking a wave of speculations. Now, Naseeruddin Shah has shared an article with The Indian Express, revealing that he did not delete the post. It was, in fact, taken down by the platform itself. The 74-year-old wrote, 'If this is taken to be a justification of my Facebook post (which has been taken down, not deleted by me) in support of Diljit Dosanjh, so be it. But the fact is, I need to justify nothing. I said whatever I had to say, and I stand by it. Nor am I discouraged by the lack of support from the film industry. I wasn't expecting any — they all either have too much to lose or they disagree.' Naseeruddin Shah also had a message for the trolls. He added, 'And to the trolls, particularly the one who said to me 'Pakistan nahin ab kabristaan ', I can only quote Jigar Moradabadi, ' Mujhe de na ghaiz mein dhamkiyaan, giren lakh baar ye bijliyan, Meri saltanat yehi aashiyaan, meri milkiyat yehi chaar par (Do not threaten me in anger, let lightning strike a thousand time/ My nest is my domain, these four feathers all I own)'.' Naseeruddin Shah, in his now-deleted Facebook entry, had said, 'I STAND FIRMLY WITH DILJIT. The dirty tricks department of the Jumla Party has been awaiting a chance to attack him. They think they've got it at last. He was not responsible for the casting of the film; the director was. But no one knows who he is, whereas Diljit is known the world over, and he agreed to the cast because his mind is not poisoned.' His concluding words were, 'What these goons want is to put an end to personal interaction between the people of India and Pakistan. I've close relatives and some dear friends there and no one can stop me from meeting them or sending them love whenever I feel like it. And my response to those who will say, 'Go to Pakistan', is 'GO TO KAILASA'.' Diljit Dosanjh's Sardaar Ji 3 released everywhere except in India on June 27.

Naseeruddin Shah shares cryptic post after facing backlash over now-deleted remarks supporting Diljit Dosanjh
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah deleted his post defending Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh amid controversy over collaboration with Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in his movie Sardaar Ji 3 after heavy backlash. However, the veteran actor shared a cryptic post a day later, saying, 'It is almost impossible to carry the torch of truth through a crowd without singeing somebody's beard.' He attributed the quote to Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, scientist and philosopher (1 Jul 1742-1799). The quote loosely means that speaking or standing up for the truth is likely to upset or offend someone, even if that's not the intention. The actor, however, did not directly address the backlash over his Facebook post or his support for Diljit Dosanjh. Naseeruddin Shah was heavily criticised by BJP leaders and some Bollywood filmmakers for his stance on the Sardaar Ji 3 controversy. BJP MLA Ram Kadam termed Shah's remarks anti-Hindu and sought a public apology from the veteran actor. He said the actor had hurt the sentiments of crores of Hindus and sought a public apology from him. 'Why is Naseeruddin Shah equating Kailasa with Pakistan?' Kadam said, referring to Shah's post asking those who say 'Go to Pakistan', to 'Go to Kailasa'. Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit also criticised the actor's post, saying that the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) was 'not surprised, not shocked' by Naseeruddin Shah's response to Diljit Dosan's controversy. 'He calls us Jumla party, he calls us goons. The educated, versatile actor, senior person in the industry, calling us goons proves the frustration and kind of restlessness of Naseeruddin Shah,' said Ashoke Pandit, referring to Shah's post calling the attack on Diljit 'dirty tricks department of Jumla Party'. 'It's very sad that I have to, on behalf of the Federation of Western India's senior employees, I have explain to him the real situation between Pakistan and India,' he added. FWICE has issued a 'non-cooperative directive' to Diljit Dosanjh over the Sardaar Ji 3 controversy. 'I STAND FIRMLY WITH DILJIT. The dirty tricks deptt of Jumla Party has been awaiting a chance to attack him. They think they've got it at last. He was not responsible for the casting of the film, the director was. But no one knows who he is, whereas Diljit is known the world over, and he agreed to the cast because his mind is not poisoned,' Naseeruddin Shah's deleted post read. 'What these goons want is to put an end to personal interaction between the people of India and Pakistan. I have close relatives and some dear friends there and no one can stop me from meeting them or sending them love whenever i feel like it,' he further wrote, adding, 'And my response to those who will say, 'Go to Pakistan', is 'GO TO KAILASA'.'
