My colleagues in Kaliganj have worked tirelessly for this, and I extend my sincere congratulations to them as well.' Trinamool Congress wins Kaliganj Assembly by-election, BJP sees silver lining

Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed won the byelections to Kaliganj Assembly on Monday (June 23, 2025) defeating her nearest rival Bharatiya Janata Party's Ashish Ghosh by a margin of 50,049 votes. Ms. Ahmed, the daughter of former Trinamool Congress MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed whose death necessitated the bypolls, secured 1,02,759 votes compared to Mr. Ghosh who finished the race with 52,710 votes. The CPI(M) supported Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Sheikh came in third with 28,348 votes when the counting of votes was held during the day. The Trinamool candidate bettered the margin of the ruling party compared to what her father had secured in the 2021 Assembly polls. Ms. Ahmed (38) quit her job at an IT firm in Kolkata to foray into politics. Two-time Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra, who has had a similar career path, welcomed the victory of Ms. Ahmed and said 'Satyameva Jayate' on social media. Kaliganj Assembly seat falls under Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembered former MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, while dedicating the party's victory to 'Maa, Maati and Manush (mother, soil, and people)'. Ms. Banerjee added that: 'People of all religions, castes, races and walks of life in the area have blessed us immensely by exercising their right to vote in the by-elections to the Kaliganj Assembly constituency.' After the 2024 Lok Sabha election, bypolls to 11 Assembly constituencies have been held in the State and the Trinamool Congress has won all the 11 seats. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, however, said that there was a silver lining as more than 70% of Hindus in the constituency voted in favour of the BJP. Mr. Adhikari said that out of 108 booths with a majority of Hindu population in Kaliganj, in 107 booths the BJP candidate secured victory. Calling for the unity of Hindus in West Bengal, the BJP leader said that the party requires support of 70% Hindu votes to defeat Trinamool Congress in next year's Assembly polls. BJP leader Amit Malviya said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's claims that people from all communities voted for her party's candidate in Kaliganj is incorrect. Mr. Malviya said that Hindus are 43% of the voters and Muslims comprise the rest of the voters in Kaliganj. He also cited the voting trend to assert that the BJP candidate secured 74% of votes at Kaliganj higher than the votes secured in the 2021 Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

TMC wins Kaliganj bypoll; Congress-CPIM alliance and BJP see decrease in vote-share

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured a decisive victory in the Kaliganj Assembly bypoll, with party candidate Alifa Ahmed winning by a significant margin. The BJP's Ashish Ghosh came second, while Congress candidate Kabiluddin Sheikh finished third. As of the 23rd round of counting, it was seen that both the BJP and CPIM-Congress alliance's vote shares had slightly decreased from the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. TMC received around 55 percent of the vote share for the bypoll, followed by the BJP with 28 percent and the Congress with 15 percent. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC got 47.08 percent, BJP got 31.67 percent and Congress-CPIM got 18.47 percent of the vote. While the TMC had been confident of retaining the seat, the BJP focused its campaign on consolidating Hindu votes in an area where over 48 percent of the electorate belongs to minority communities. The party had invoked the Centre's Operation Sindoor and criticised what it termed TMC's 'appeasement politics'. Following the result, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her gratitude in a post on social media platform X, saying, 'People of all religions, castes, races, and walks of life in the area have blessed us immensely… I humbly express my gratitude to them… The main architects of this victory are ma-mati-manush (mother, soil, and people)… Remembering the late MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, I dedicate this victory to the motherland and people of Bengal.' Alifa Ahmed, daughter of the late TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, said, 'I got blessings from every corner of Kaliganj. I am happy.' Ahmed, 38, is a BTech graduate and works with a prominent IT firm. The seat fell vacant after her father's death in February this year. Nasiruddin Ahmed had won the Kaliganj seat in 2011, lost in 2016, and regained it in 2021. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari commented, 'I don't have the final result yet, but from what I've seen, CPIM-Congress got some support in minority areas. Our goal was to consolidate the Hindu vote, and I believe we were successful in that strategy.'

Kaliganj bypolls: TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed secures landslide victory against BJP's Ashish Ghosh; CM Mamata Banerjee expresses gratitude

NEW DELHI: All India Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed secured a sweeping victory in the Kaliganj Assembly bypoll, defeating BJP's Ashish Ghosh by a margin of 50,049 votes—surpassing the 2021 win margin of her late father, Nasiruddin Ahmed, whose passing in February prompted the election in West Bengal's Nadia district. Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Shaikh, backed by the Left, finished third with 28,348 votes. The byelection, held on Thursday, saw a voter turnout of 69.85% by 5pm and was largely peaceful, aside from a few isolated incidents. Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed gratitude saying, "People of all religions, castes, races and walks of life in the area have blessed us immensely by exercising their right to vote in the by-elections to the Kaliganj Assembly constituency. I humbly express my gratitude to them. The main architects of this victory are mother, soil, and people. My colleagues from Kaliganj have worked tirelessly for this. I also extend my heartfelt congratulations to them. " "My greetings and salutations to everyone. In memory of the late MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, I dedicate this victory to the motherland and people of Bengal," she said. Alifa, a 38-year-old engineer, left her corporate role at a Kolkata-based IT company to enter politics, drawing inspiration from Mahua Moitra, the Trinamool MP from Krishnanagar—under which the Kaliganj Assembly segment falls. Like Moitra, who traded her career in investment banking for the political arena, Alifa chose grassroots engagement and legislative advocacy over her former profession. Meanwhile, a blast in Kaliganj in Naida district killed a 13-year-old girl prompting CM Mamata to take strict action against the culprits.

Assembly bypolls result: Trinamool's Alifa Ahmed wins massively, BJP comes 2nd

Kolkata, June 23: Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed registered a massive win in the bypoll to the Kaliganj Assembly constituency in Nadia district of West Bengal. The Election Commission of India declared her the winner after 23 rounds of counting were completed. She won with a margin of 49,755 votes. As per the ECI, Ahmed has secured 1,02,179 votes, BJP's Ashish Ghosh came in the second position with 52,424 votes, followed by Left Front-supported Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Shaikh at 28,262 votes. The fourth position has been secured by NOTA at 2,500. This means that the total votes going in favour of the Trinamool Congress candidate are more than the combined votes going in favour of the BJP and Congress candidates, as well as NOTA. As expected, Alifa Ahmed surpassed the winning margin of her late father and then legislator from Kaliganj Nasiruddin Ahmed, who won from there in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections by a margin of 45,987 votes, defeating BJP's Abhijit Ghosh. Bypoll to the Kaliganj was necessitated by the demise of Nasiruddin Ahmed in February this year. Confirming her victory and the victory margin, Alifa Ahmed told media persons that the people of Kaliganj had voted in favour of development and also against attempts at communal divide. 'The people of Kaliganj have again proved that there is no space for communal politics in West Bengal. From my margin, it is evident that people from all religious communities have voted for me,' she said. Kaligani is a minority-dominated constituency with Muslim voters constituting almost 60 per cent of the total voters there. According to political observers, from the results and the margin, it is evident that Trinamool Congress has successfully consolidated the Muslim votes in its favour, as it did both in the 2021 Assembly as well as in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After this bypoll, Trinamool has 227 MLAs in the 294-member Assembly, the BJP has 66, and the AISF has one.
