4 cruise guests arrested for alleged drug possession in Bermuda
Four U.S. Carnival Cruise Line passengers were arrested in Bermuda for alleged drug possession. The guests were detained by cruise ship security for having 'a significant quantity of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia, believed intended for distribution on the island,' the Bermuda Police Service said in a July 22 Facebook post. The alleged items included one package of carfentanyl, multiple compressed cannabis packages, vape pens and what were suspected to be THC gummies, authorities said. They were arrested upon entry to Bermuda. 'Carfentanyl is about 100 times stronger than fentanyl and was originally used to sedate large animals like elephants,' Acting Detective Superintendent Derricka Burns said in the post. 'Even tiny amounts can be deadly. This seizure may have prevented a potential tragedy.' The travelers, who were not named, are in police custody with charges 'expected to follow,' according to Bermuda police. Authorities did not specify which ship they were sailing on. 'We follow a zero-tolerance drug policy, as we strictly comply with all applicable laws and regulations, and we also advise our guests that they can be personally subject to local law enforcement actions,' Carnival told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. The Bermuda Police Service Narcotics Unit is investigating the case. Nathan Diller is a consumer travel reporter for USA TODAY based in Nashville. You can reach him at ndiller@

Over 140 guests, crew sick due to a gastrointestinal outbreak on this popular cruise line
More than 140 people got sick in a gastrointestinal illness outbreak during a Royal Caribbean International cruise. Among the 3,914 guests aboard its Navigator of the Seas ship, 134 reported being ill during a cruise that ended July 11, along with seven crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Their main symptoms were vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The health agency listed the causative agent as unknown. The ship was sailing a week-long cruise to Mexico round-trip from Los Angeles, according to CruiseMapper. The cruise line implemented heightened disinfection and cleaning measures and isolated sick guests and crew, among other steps, the CDC said. 'The health and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit are our top priority,' a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Group, the line's parent company, told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. 'To maintain an environment that supports the highest levels of health and safety onboard our ships, we implement rigorous cleaning procedures, many of which far exceed public health guidelines.' There have been 18 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruises that met the CDC's threshold for public notification in 2025, most of which were caused by norovirus. There were 18 outbreaks total last year, and 14 in 2023. The CDC told USA TODAY in April that while 'the number of recent cruise ship outbreaks has been higher than in years prior to the pandemic, we do not yet know if this represents a new trend.' 'However, CDC data show a newly dominant strain is currently associated with reported norovirus outbreaks on land,' the agency said in an emailed statement. 'Ships typically follow the pattern of land-based outbreaks, which are higher this norovirus season.' The illness is often associated with cruise ships, but those represent only 1% of all outbreaks reported. Nathan Diller is a consumer travel reporter for USA TODAY based in Nashville. Flight to London diverts to Maine following 'in-flight altercation'
An incident involving two passengers forced a TUI Airways flight to divert to Maine, authorities said. TUI flight 49 from Cancun to London landed at Bangor International Airport around 9:20 p.m. local time on July 8 'after the crew reported a passenger disturbance,' the Federal Aviation Administration told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. 'The flight departed from Cancun International Airport in Mexico and was headed to London Gatwick Airport in England,' the agency said. The flight left Cancun around 4 p.m. local time, according to flight-tracking site Flightradar24. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said the plane stopped in Maine 'due to an in-flight altercation between two passengers.' 'Upon arrival, CBP officers removed both individuals from the aircraft, and they were returned to their home countries on separate outbound flights,' they said in an emailed statement. The agency did not share additional specifics about the altercation or the passengers involved. TUI did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment. The FAA has received 835 reports of unruly passengers on airlines so far this year, according to its website. The agency received a total of 2,102 in 2024, and 2,076 the year prior. The U.S. has a big birthday in 2026, and Holland America Line will take guests to the heart of the festivities. The country will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, or semiquincentennial, on July 4, 2026. In honor of the occasion, a week-long cruise will take passengers to historic cities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic (along with Canada). 'America's 250th anniversary is a once-in-a-generation milestone, and we're excited to mark this historic occasion with a cruise that brings our guests closer to the places where our nation was born,' Beth Bodensteiner, the cruise line's president, said in a news release. 'From walking the grounds of Williamsburg and visiting Ellis Island to exploring Boston's Freedom Trail, this voyage offers an unforgettable journey through American history. And with special events planned to celebrate the Fourth of July in true patriotic style, it promises to be a meaningful and memorable experience for everyone on board.' When is Holland America's semiquincentennial cruise? The round-trip sailing will depart on July 4, 2026, from Boston on the line's 1,964-guest Zuiderdam ship. Where will the cruise sail? The cruise will linger in Boston Harbor, where passengers will have a chance to watch the Massachusetts city's fireworks from the vessel. That will be followed by visits to Saint John, New Brunswick, in Canada, and Norfolk, Virginia, where guests can take shore excursions to Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg, which make up the Historic Triangle. The cruise will wrap up with an overnight stop in New York – which will host the largest flotilla of tall ships from across the globe in the Port of New York and New Jersey – before returning to Boston. How much does the cruise cost? The America's 250th Celebration: Stars & Stripes Voyage currently starts at $1,459 per person based on double occupancy, including port fees and taxes.
