Blue Jays' Alek Manoah shows positive signs despite rocky debut in first game since Tommy John surgery
Approximately 13 months removed from Tommy John surgery, Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah has made his official return to the mound. Manoah, who underwent the invasive procedure last June to repair a torn ligament in his elbow, began a rehab assignment with the Florida Coast League Blue Jays on Monday morning. The rust was apparent as the Jays' former ace allowed four runs — three earned — on a hit and two walks across one-third of an inning. He threw 10 of his 22 pitches for strikes in the debut outing. Man felt so great to be back out there, hear the National Anthems and toe that rubber. 392 days! Thank you Jesus! Been a long journey, look forward to continuing to get better, have fun and COMPETE everyday!! The pitching line doesn't matter much to the Jays at this point. Instead, it's the quality of his stuff that they will be monitoring closely and there were positives signs on that front. Manoah averaged 94.2 m.p.h. on his fastball, which was an increase from the 93.3 he averaged in 2024 prior to the injury. 'Just want to see him get out there, get hot, and go through his normal routine,' Jays manager John Schneider told reporters prior to the all-star break. '(I) have no care whatsoever about results.' Once pitchers begin a rehab assignment, they have 30 days to recover from injury. Once the clock expires, the club must decide on the next steps. For most pitchers that would involve being added to the 26-man active roster, but in Manoah's case he has two options remaining on his contract, which means he could be kept in the minor leagues instead. The clock can also be reset in the event of a setback. Manoah is expected to use all of those 30 days to get back into pitching shape. He has been throwing off a mound since March , but only with a limited number of pitches. That means he's essentially starting his own personal spring training and will use the next four weeks to continue building up endurance and working on his overall effectiveness. It's not immediately clear what the Jays will do once Manoah is up to speed. Their rotation is currently full with Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer and Eric Lauer. They are also expected to try to add another starter prior to the July 31 trade deadline. At the very least, Manoah would give the Jays additional depth down the stretch. It's also possible that if he looks good enough, he could supplant Lauer as a member of the starting five, especially if the Jays don't add at the deadline. That decision won't have to be made until mid-August. Manoah's signature season came in 2022 when he went 16-7 with a 2.24 ERA. During that same year, he was named to the all-star team and finished top three in voting for the American League Cy Young Award. The now 27-year-old faltered the following season with a 5.87 ERA and he made just five appearances in 2024 before going down with the elbow injury.

Macron state visit: King and Queen give French President royal welcome
The French President has landed in the UK and been welcomed by the royal family at the start of his State Visit. Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, are spending the next three days in London and Windsor, the first visit of a European Union leader since the acrimonious Brexit process. The couple were greeted by Prince William and Kate as they landed at RAF Northolt on Tuesday morning, before travelling to Windsor to meet the King and Queen The Royal Family is being deployed in force to repair relations with the UK's closest neighbour, and the government hopes to find ways through some thorny issues, like small boat crossings and the defence of Europe following Donald Trump's return to the White House. Tonight, at a State Banquet at Windsor Castle, King Charles will deliver a speech to a room full of British and French politicians and celebrities. He'll tell the audience in the vast St George's Hall inside the castle that the UK and France face a multitude of complex threats, emanating from multiple directions.' But he will say as friends, neighbours and allies the two countries can 'face them together.' The visit began with an arrival at RAF Northolt, before the President and his wife were escorted on the drive to Windsor by the Prince and Princess of Wales. In Windsor itself, a dais has been set up outside Windsor and Eton Riverside train station, draped in the French and British flags for the ceremonial welcome and inspection of the troops. King Charles and Queen Camilla will then travel in carriages with their guests of honour up the hill and into the castle grounds. Crowds were starting to gather along the route from early this morning. It's the first state visit to take place in Windsor since 2014, when the Irish President was here. State Visits, normally take place in London, but the major renovation works at Buckingham Palace have forced them to relocate to Windsor. That will include the big official visit of President Donald Trump, which is planned for September. A Royal Salute will be fired both in Home Park at Windsor and at the Tower of London upon the President's arrival at the Royal Dais. After they have travelled by carriage into the Quadrangle of Windsor Castle, a Guard of Honour will be waiting for them and the regimental band will play the French and British National Anthems. Other members of the Royal Family will attend the lunch and then, in the Green Drawing Room, the guests are shown items from the Royal Collection, a tradition for all state visits, which have a particular significance to the visiting head of state and his or her country's shared history with the UK. A few events are then planned in London, where the Royal Family hand over the guests to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. Monsieur Macron will make a speech to MPs and members of the House of Lords, much of which is expected to be in English. The politics of this visit and the final discussions about small boat crossings and defence alliances will be parked until later in the visit. There will be talks with the Prime Minister on Wednesday and a formal UK-France summit on Thursday. But the first day is all about the royal welcome. The State Banquet will provide another opportunity for speeches and kind words. Senior ministers are hoping the Royal Family will, in their usual way, wrap their guests in a blanket of so-called 'soft power'. After a bumpy few years with Prime Ministers including David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, the current administration is keen to repair relations to help with the Prime Minister's priorities of economic growth and stemming the flow of illegal migration. 'For centuries our citizens have admired each other, amused each other, and imitated each other, ' the King is expected to say. He will talk about being 'in awe of France's extraordinary attributes and achievements.' The last time a French President had a State Visit here was in 2008, when Nicholas Sarkozy was a guest of Queen Elizabeth II.

Tony Award winning actress Kristin Chenoweth slammed by NBA fans for Game 7 national anthem
NBA fans blasted Tony Award winner and Oklahoma native Kristin Chenoweth's national anthem performance ahead of Game 7 between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers. Chenoweth, 56, was center court in front of a packed house at Paycom Center Sunday night to perform her rendition of the anthem — during which she held a long high note towards the song's last virus, receiving a fiery applause from those in attendance. While the performance appeared to get fans in attendance fired up, others watching the ABC live broadcast seemed to be less than impressed by the Broadway star's vocals. 5 Kristin Chenoweth sings the national anthem before Game 7 of the NBA Finals basketball series between the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday, June 22, 2025, in Oklahoma City. AP 'The Kristen Chenoweth rendition of the National Anthem was a difficult listen,' one viewer posted on X. 'What the hell was that national anthem?' another questioned. 'This is the worst National Anthem I ever heard,' another boldly stated. 'This national anthem up there with fergie,' another wrote, referring to singer Fergie's infamous national anthem performance at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game. Though Chenoweth received some harsh criticism for the performance, others appeared to enjoy her rendition. 'Damn! That was one of the stronger National Anthems I've heard in awhile!! Great job by Kristin Chenoweth!!' One Game 7 final viewer wrote. 5 Chenoweth, 56, was center court in front of a packed house at Paycom Center Sunday night to perform her rendition of the anthem. 'Oklahoma native Kristin Chenoweth nailed the national anthem before Game 7,' wrote another. Born in Broken Arrow — about 115 miles northeast of the Paycom Center — Chenoweth went to Oklahoma City University before becoming an award-winning actress. However, through all her success, the 'Wicked' star has never forgotten her roots or shied away from hiding her Thunder fandom. 'I never miss a game unless I'm on stage,' Chenoweth, donning a Thunder sweatshirt, told the Tulsa World during her soundcheck at the Paycom Center before the game. 5 Though Chenoweth received some harsh criticism for the performance, others appeared to enjoy her rendition. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect 'I was a cheerleader in high school in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and I loved football, but my favorite was basketball. I like how much of a team player you've got to be. … And this is my team.' Chenoweth said that her love for the Thunder runs so deeply that she spent three hours bedazzling a Thunder hat. She also said she named her 8-year-old pup 'Thunder' and even bought the dog his own team apparel to wear. 'Let me just say, if they had anxiety medication for Thunder fans, I'd be taking it,' Chenoweth said. Prior to tip-off on Sunday, the 'You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown' actress said the nerves she's feeling ahead of Game 7 are up there with some of the most significant moments of her entertainment career. 5 The 'Wicked' star has never forgotten her roots or shied away from hiding her Thunder fandom. However, nerves aside, the Tony Award-winning actress said it was an honor to be chosen to perform the anthem for her hometown team. 'I just am very honored that they asked. And I'm proud of these kids. I mean, we have come so far. Of course I want us to win,' she said. 'When the NFL has hired me for the anthem, you remain neutral. But the NBA didn't hire me for this, so I'm Thundering it up.' 5 Kristin Chenoweth sings the national anthem before Game 7 of the NBA Finals basketball series between the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday. AP Chenoweth added that the young players on the Thunder have been an inspiration to continue her already critically acclaimed career. 'I still have the desire,' Chenoweth said. 'I think really what inspires me lately is young talent. I'm seeing and watching and learning from them. Hopefully they're learning from me. And there's nothing better than watching a budding talent whether it's basketball or a singer, an artist, it's my jam. What keeps me going right now is other people inspiring me to do what I love.' The Thunder came out on top at the end of Game 7, earning an NBA title for the first time in the franchise's history after defeating the Pacers 103 – 91. League MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named Most Valuable Player of the Finals after helping his team secure Sunday night's win with 29 points.
