Two teen girls charged in Oshawa, Ont., swarming, 11-year-old also a suspect: police

Two girls, aged 13 and 14, have been charged with assault after an alleged swarming attack in Oshawa, Ont., last week while three other youths, including an 11-year-old, are considered suspects, police said Friday. But Durham Region police said there's 'no evidence' at this time that hate was an aggravating factor in the alleged attack on a Muslim woman whose hijab was ripped off. In a press release Friday, police said officers responded to a report of an assault at a Pizza Pizza restaurant shortly after midnight on July 2. They alleged one of the suspects jumped behind the counter and tried to take something and the victim tried to stop them before being swarmed and kicked repeatedly by others in the group. They are also searching for a 13-year-old boy wanted for assault and an unidentified female suspect between the ages of 12 to 15. 'The investigation remains ongoing and at this time, there is no evidence to indicate that hate was an aggravating factor in this assault,' police said Friday. Last week, advocates in the Muslim community said the alleged attack has left people anxious and frightened amid a rise in Islamophobic incidents. The victim's daughter also said her mother was 'deeply shaken' and the family is concerned about her safety. Omar Khamisa, the chief operating officer of the National Council of Canadian Muslims, said he was heartbroken and angry to hear about the incident, adding his organization is seeing a rise in reported hate crimes against Muslims. Khamisa called on elected officials to acknowledge the gravity of the issue and take measures to address it. 'It's time for the words to become actions now,' he said. 'We cannot keep waiting for the next attack before we make and move for change.' The National Council of Canadian Muslims did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday after police announced charges in the case. Durham police said hate crime is not a 'stand-alone' charge in Canada and determining whether hate played a role in a crime requires consultation with the Crown attorney's office.

Ontario : The National Council of Canadian Muslims appalled by Islamophobic attack

مدة القراءة: 1' The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) has expressed being «dismayed», «disgusted», and «angry» following an Islamophobic attack on a woman at a restaurant in Oshawa, Ontario, on Wednesday. Durham Regional Police have called on the public to help identify the suspects, believed to be young offenders. At a press conference held after the incident, NCCM Chief Operating Officer Omar Khamissa stressed the urgent need to «act and move from words to action». «Our elected officials must acknowledge what is happening in this country and develop a real plan with real solutions», he said, as quoted by Radio-Canada. According to police, the woman was the victim of a violent group assault early in the morning. Authorities said the individuals involved were already acting disruptively in the restaurant, describing how one of them «jumped over the counter, where the woman tried to block his path». During the ensuing «violent struggle», «several other individuals also jumped over the counter and attacked the victim». The NCCM alleges that the attackers removed the woman's hijab—a detail not confirmed by police. Speaking to Radio-Canada, the victim's daughter said her mother is «shaken» by the attack, which has left her «deeply affected and on edge». She added, «Our family has noticed a rise in Islamophobic attitudes and behaviors among the restaurant's customers». According to her, «this is not the first time a crime has been committed in the restaurant».

Victim's hijab ‘violently' pulled off during alleged swarming attack: advocates

OSHAWA – Advocates say the Muslim community is reeling after a swarming attack on a business owner in Oshawa, Ont., earlier this week that police are investigating as a possible hate crime. Durham regional police say a group of teens caused a disturbance at a Pizza Pizza restaurant a little after midnight on Wednesday and attacked the victim after they were confronted. Police say store surveillance footage shows the group swarming and assaulting a person at the store, and they are encouraging perpetrators to come forward as they seek witnesses. Amira Elghawaby, a federal special representative on combating Islamophobia, said at a news conference outside Oshawa's city hall this morning that the victim is a visibly Muslim woman. She alleged the suspects 'violently' ripped off the woman's hijab during the attack, and said community members are feeling anxious and frightened. Omar Khamisa, the chief operating officer of the National Council of Canadian Muslims, said he was heartbroken and angry to hear about the attack, adding his organization is seeing a rise in reported hate crimes against Muslims. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 3, 2025.
