Kerala regains lost ground to emerge second in National Achievement Survey
Kerala has improved its ranking to second in the National Achievement Survey, renamed PARAKH Rashtriya Sarveskshan, conducted in 2024. Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty, at a press conference here on Wednesday, said the survey results were a huge achievement for the State. It should be recalled that Kerala had made the gains despite the Union government holding back funds due to the State under Centrally sponsored education schemes. The State was ranked third in class III, first in class VI, and second in class IX. The survey was conducted by PARAKH in the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), in collaboration with CBSE, New Delhi, under the Union Ministry of Education in December to not only understand learning achievements of students but also assess the overall health of school education in the country. The last iteration of the survey in 2021 was conducted for classes III, V, VIII, and X. In 2024, students of classes III, VI, and IX were tested on Language, Mathematics, 'World Around Us,' Science, and Social Science. As many as 45,737 students from 1,644 schools in the State took part in the survey. Mr. Sivankutty said that in class III the State had improved its scores in 2024 as compared to that in 2021. In Language, Kerala's average was 75% while the national average was 64%. In 2021, the State average was 70%. In Mathematics, the State average in 2024 was 70%, while the national average was 60%. In 2021, the State score was 60%. In 2024, the State average for class VI in Language was 76% while the national average was 57%. In 2021, the State average for class V students in Language was 57%. In Mathematics, the State average for class VI students was 60%, while the national average was 46%. In 2021, the State average for class V students was 41, while the national average was 44%. In Science, the national average was 66, while the national average was 49% in 2024 for class VI students. In 2021, the State and the national average for class V students were 48%. In 2024, the State average in Language for class IX students was 74% while the national average was 54%. In 2021, the State average in Language for class VIII students was 57%. In Mathematics, the State average in 2024 for class IX students was 45% while the national average was 37%. In 2021, the State average for class VIII students was 31% while the national average was 36%. In Science, the State average in 2024 for class IX students was 53% and the national average 40%. In Social Science, the State average in 2024 was 51 and the national average was 40%. The Minister said that good progress had been seen in all subjects in class III and VI as also in class IX. These were the result of the work put in by students, teachers, parents, the department, and the government. Director of General Education Shanavas S. said the survey results showed that the State had regained lost ground quickly. Only some points separated it from the leader Punjab in class III results. In class VI, both States were tied, and in class IX there was only a difference of one percentage point between the two States. 'We have excelled in all parameters. We will further boost the comprehensive quality education programme and any lacunae that remained last year will be addressed,' he said.

Vedic maths to be added to NCERT textbooks for Classes 6 to 8 in Uttar Pradesh
In a new step towards revamping school education, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced that Vedic Mathematics will be introduced in NCERT textbooks for Classes 6 to 8 starting the 2025-26 academic session. This new addition will apply to all government-run schools in the maths, known for its quick and simple calculation techniques, will now be formally part of the school curriculum. It's being introduced as a way to sharpen students' numerical skills, reduce fear of maths, and bring Indian knowledge systems back into the mainstream -- just as the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) TEACHERS, CHANGING TEXTBOOKSTo make this change effective, teachers will be specially trained in Vedic maths techniques. New chapters on these methods will be included in the updated NCERT maths books. The focus will be on practical tricks using 16 sutras and 13 sub-sutras introduced by Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha Ji in the early 20th century.'This is not just a method of calculation, but a cultural renaissance,' said Dr RK Mishra, a senior educationist. Experts believe that this approach will help boost both speed and accuracy in solving maths problems, especially for students who struggle with the subject.A PILOT MOVE THAT OTHER STATES MAY FOLLOWThe NEP 2020 encourages curriculum flexibility and local customisation. A collective uprising against scourge of waste
ARUNACHAL PRADESH: When a community rises with grit and determination, nothing is beyond its reach. Silluk village in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh is a glaring example. Once labelled the dirtiest village in the district, it has now become a national model of cleanliness through innovative waste management and environmental practices. The village's inspiring transformation has been recognised by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), which has featured Silluk in a Class 3 environmental studies textbook in a chapter titled 'Taking Charge of Waste'. 'Today, let's take a tour of a village called Silluk in Arunachal Pradesh. As we enter the village, we notice clean roads. There is no trash lying on the roadsides or in corners or open spaces. The streets, lined with trees, feel as if we are walking in a garden! This village has received an award for managing its waste in the best possible way. It is called a zero-waste village,' excerpts from the chapter read. Silluk, with around 150 households, once had roads littered with dung, making walking arduous. Most households reared cows, and the animals often left on roads. Silluk's march to goodliness began in 2019 when the then East Siang District Magistrate Dr Kinny Singh visited the village for the first time. Currently serving as Special Secretary, Health, Government of Delhi, Singh had inspired the villagers to work toward cleanliness. 'It started with madam's encouraging words. She said we must work together to make the village clean. With her support and guidance, we soon launched the Swachh Silluk Abhiyan in line with Swachh Bharat Mission. There has been no looking back since,' says Kepang Nong Borang, chairman of Swachh Siluk Abhiyan.

Karnataka government schoolkids to get online learning resources from Khan Academy
Bengaluru: In what could be the biggest digital intervention project for govt school students in the state, the department of school education and literacy has entered into an MoU with US-based not-for-profit Khan Academy to offer online learning resources to children of classes 6-II PU. With this, students will have access to maths, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, and English resources. One hour on Saturdays will be dedicated to using these resources in schools. Students and teachers will be given a login ID, mobile app, and access to KhanMigo artificial intelligence tool free of cost. The account can be used throughout their lives free of cost. "Teachers should guide students to use vast learning resources on the portal, the practice tests and skills, and revision modules for supplemental understanding, clarification of concepts, achieving higher learning levels, self-study for competitive examinations, etc. The teachers will also train students of classes 8-II PU on how to use the KhanMigo artificial intelligence tool, which itself will work as a digital tutor," said an official. "This will enable teachers to upgrade/refresh their skills and subject knowledge, use content for quizzes, tests, use KhanMigo as a teaching assistant, prepare lesson plans for classes, etc. It is a win-win situation for all," the official said. The contents are also expected to help in preparation for competitive exams. The project is expected to help 15.9 lakh students in 26,597 govt schools and about 3.1 lakh students from 1,229 govt PU colleges. The contents are in sync with National Council of Educational Research and Training textbooks, which are used by the state syllabus schools. The department officials said the data on the Student Achievement Tracking System (SATS) regarding the availability of functional computers is wrong and misleading; most schools have the infrastructure. "If not a computer, all schools have digital boards on which the content can be projected from a mobile. This year, Rs 35 crore is allotted in the state budget and separately under Samagra Shikshana each for digital boards/computers," said the official. The govt order states no grant will be released to Khan Academy for the implementation of this programme.

12 government schools in Karnataka's Raichur to get high-tech science labs
