Jordan's local revenues rise by 224.1 million JD in early 2025
Jordan's local revenues increased by 224.1 million Jordanian Dinars ($315 million) during the first five months of 2025, reaching 4.067 billion dinars, up from 3.843 billion dinars in the same period last year, according to recent data. Regarding public debt, figures show that the total public debt in May 2025 stood at approximately 35.8 billion dinars, equivalent to 92.7% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This temporary rise in public debt is attributed to financing the budget deficit and covering losses incurred by the National Electric Power Company and the Water Authority. Additionally, Jordan received $1 billion in concessional loans from friendly nations during March and April. The government also issued Islamic sukuk at a competitive interest rate of 4.8% to reduce interest payments, alleviate financial burdens, and fund capital projects. The government said that the $1 billion received as a loan was deposited into the Central Bank of Jordan, contributing to the public debt balance until the end of May. Notably, a $1 billion Eurobond was repaid in June without issuing new bonds, which could have carried interest rates as high as 9%. The public debt balance is projected to decrease to approximately 35.3 billion dinars by the end of June 2025. Furthermore, the debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to fall to around 91% when excluding holdings by the Social Security Investment Fund.

Jordan to increase power supply to Iraq to 150 megawatts
Baghdad ( – Jordan has announced that a project to increase power supplies to Iraq will be completed in August as part of the second phase of the electrical interconnection project between the two countries. Iraq, which is now experiencing a severe power shortage, acquired around 40 megawatts in the first quarter of 2024 after completing the project's initial phase. Director General of the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) Sufyan Batayneh revealed that 99 percent of the project within Iraq's borders is completed, and the facilities will be completely operational by August, according to Zawya News. Jordan is expected to supply 150 megawatts of electricity to Iraq by the end of August, according to Batayneh. The first phase of the project went into operation in the first quarter of 2024, linking the Risha power plant in Jordan and the Al-Rutba power station in Iraq at a voltage of 132 kilovolts. Iraq and Jordan signed an agreement in February 2024 in the Jordanian capital, Amman, to provide Iraq with 40 megawatts of electricity in the first phase. In the medium run, further connecting phases may raise Jordan's electricity supply to Iraq to 500 megawatts.

Government sources spoke to Roya about the massive toll on Jordan's electricity sector amid the recent military escalation between Iran and 'Israel'. The suspension of natural gas flows resulted in estimated daily losses of JD 1 million incurred by the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO). Despite the financial strain, NEPCO confirmed that Jordan is not experiencing any power outages. The company emphasized that its emergency measures announced earlier today are aimed at maintaining uninterrupted electricity supply across the country. NEPCO's emergency plan In a statement issued Monday, NEPCO announced it had activated its emergency plan in response to a significant drop in natural gas supplies, an outcome of the ongoing regional tensions. One of the plan's immediate steps included the temporary suspension of gas supplies to factories connected to the country's main gas network. The company described the suspension as a precautionary measure aligned with the national gas distribution priorities outlined in the emergency strategy. NEPCO stressed that the suspension is temporary and will be reassessed once regional conditions stabilize and gas flows resume. One million dinars per day: The cost of halted gas supplies Jordan's power plants rely heavily on natural gas as their primary energy source. Government sources stated that the disruption in supply has forced power plants to switch to more expensive alternatives, such as diesel or heavy fuel oil, in order to maintain consistent electricity production and meet domestic demand. This switch has led to a sharp increase in operating costs, with NEPCO incurring around JD1 million in additional expenses every day, placing further pressure on the national budget amid already challenging economic conditions.

Electricity Purchased and Sold Increased by 5.8% Last Year - Jordan News
Electricity purchased and sold both increased by 5.8% during the past year compared to 2023, according to the recently released annual report of the National Electric Power Company. اضافة اعلان According to the report, the amount of electricity purchased reached 22,723 gigawatt-hours last year compared to 21,473 in 2023. This includes a 0.2% increase from traditional generation projects, a 22.8% rise from shale oil/Atarat projects, and a 7.5% increase from renewable energy projects. Meanwhile, other sources such as King Talal Dam and the Jordanian-Indian Chemical Company saw a decrease of 3.5%. Electricity sold amounted to 22,323 gigawatt-hours in 2024 compared to 21,105 in 2023. The report noted a 5.5% increase for distribution companies, 7.2% for industrial consumers (transformative, extractive, and electrical energy sectors), and 2.8% for other consumers including the airport, radio, television, and others. The report also stated that imported electricity from Egypt slightly decreased from 266.4 megawatt-hours to 264.0 megawatt-hours, a 0.9% drop. On the other hand, electricity exports rose by 32.6%, from 200.4 to 265.8 megawatt-hours, involving Jerusalem Electricity Company (Jericho), the Iraqi border crossing at Trebil, and the General Electricity Transmission Company of Iraq.

Minister of Energy: Al-Samra Power Generation Company Contributes About 30% of Jordan's Electricity Needs
On Thursday, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, sponsored the Independence Day celebration organized by Al-Samra Power Generation Company in the Hashmiya area of Zarqa Governorate. The event was attended by the Director General of the National Electric Power Company, the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, and several officials and dignitaries from Zarqa city. اضافة اعلان Al-Kharabsheh stated that Al-Samra Power Generation Company contributes about 30% of the Kingdom's electricity needs, making it one of the largest and most important energy companies in Jordan. He reviewed the achievements in the energy sector, noting that Al-Samra station began commercial production in 2005 with the first gas turbine having a capacity of 100 megawatts. The station's current nominal capacity has reached 1,241 megawatts, with a total capacity expected to reach 1,834 megawatts by 2025. He explained that the station is managed with high efficiency by national staff, with a large portion coming from Zarqa Governorate, which enhances the company's role in supporting local communities and creating job opportunities. Al-Kharabsheh emphasized that the economic modernization vision serves as a roadmap for Jordan, viewing the energy sector as a key driver for other sectors and a main pillar of the national economy. He stressed the importance of confronting current challenges, turning them into opportunities, and aiming to achieve many future ambitions. He also noted that the government is working to fully secure the Kingdom's natural gas needs from the Risha field within the next five years, thanks to the efforts of the National Petroleum Company's teams. For his part, the Director General of Al-Samra Power Generation Company, Engineer Sami Al-Zwaitin, praised the company's achievements since its establishment in 2005 until 2025, during which electricity production increased about twelvefold. Al-Zwaitin added that the company operates with Jordanian hands, pointing out that it contributes to generating more than 30% of the country's electricity production, and that Jordan has witnessed significant development in the energy sector, especially electricity.
