Photo: PID Listen to article Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), along with the federal ministers for climate change and planning, to closely coordinate with provincial governments in formulating a comprehensive disaster management plan, as the death toll from this year's torrential rains and cloudbursts reached 178 on Thursday. He issued the directive during his visit to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) at the NDMA headquarters, where he was briefed on the current monsoon situation, ongoing disaster response efforts, and the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. He further informed that this year's monsoon intensity is between 60 to 70 per cent higher than last year, and overall 65 per cent above average across the region. He noted that while the monsoon season typically includes eight to nine weather spells, the current cycle has already experienced two to three additional spells. He added that last year's forecasts had indicated increased impact in northern Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Islamabad, and upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), whereas this year the brunt has shifted toward lower and upper Punjab, AJK, and Islamabad — a trend expected to continue for another three to four weeks. NDMA chairman also warned that four to five more monsoon spells are expected, with the third spell — which began on June 26 — now nearing its conclusion. Commending the NDMA's efforts, the premier lauded the authority's skilled personnel and modern infrastructure, describing the organisation as providing an "encouraging environment" for disaster management through a highly capable team. While southern parts of the country have been less affected, he observed that the central and northern regions remain significantly at risk. He also praised the response of provincial governments. He said coordination between NDMA and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) had helped minimise losses. Emphasising the importance of preparedness, PM Shehbaz said, 'As projections show increased cloudburst activity, we must prepare accordingly. The federal government and NDMA must maintain close coordination with provinces.' Highlighting Pakistan's vulnerability to climate change, he reiterated that although the country contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, it ranks among the top ten most climate-vulnerable nations. 'This is both a challenge and an opportunity to build a climate-resilient Pakistan, particularly in the fields of agriculture and infrastructure,' the PM added.

NDMA issues heavy rain forecast, flood alerts for several regions
The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) on Wednesday issued a nationwide alert as the ongoing monsoon spell from July 2 to July 8, 2025, is expected to bring widespread rains and trigger potential flooding across various regions of the country. According to the alert, heavy rainfall is expected between July 5 and 8 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and northeastern Punjab, which may cause urban flooding in cities like Lahore, Sialkot, and Narowal, and hill torrents in DG Khan and Rajanpur districts. The NEOC has also warned of a high water flow in the Kabul River and Tarbela Dam, while Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan may worsen the situation in the northern highlands. There is also a risk of landslides in mountainous areas. NDMA issues impact-based weather alerts as monsoon rains lash Pakistan Flash flooding is expected in seasonal streams, including Deg, Bein, and Palkhu Nullahs, the statement said. The NDMA has urged citizens to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures, especially in vulnerable areas. Flash flood threat grows in north as NDMA issues GLOF alert
Listen to article The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for northern regions amid a combination of persistent high temperatures, intensified monsoon activity, and a prevailing westerly weather system. According to a statement from the National Emergencies Operation Centre on Wednesday, sustained heat over recent weeks has led to accelerated snow and glacier melt. Combined with ongoing monsoon rains and thunderstorms, the risk of sudden glacial outburst floods has significantly increased. 'Valleys identified as highly vulnerable — including Reshun, Brep, Booni, Sardar Gol, Thalu 1 and 2, Badswat, Hinarchi, Darkut, and Hundur — are at heightened risk,' the NDMA said. گلیشیائی جھیل کے پھٹنے (GLOF) الرٹ: شدید گرمی اور مغربی موسمی سلسلے کے باعث شمالی علاقوں کے گلیشیرز ریشن، بریپ، بونی، سردار گول، تھلو 1، تھلو 2، بدسوات، ہنارچی، درکوٹ، ہنڈر)میں برف پگھلنے کیوجہ سے ان علاقوں میں گلیشیائی سیلاب اور رابطہ سڑکیں بندش کا شکار ہو سکتی ہیں۔ — NDMA PAKISTAN (@ndmapk) June 25, 2025 Sudden outbursts from glacial lakes could trigger flash floods, posing serious threats to human lives, livestock, agriculture, and critical infrastructure. Roads, bridges, and communication networks may also suffer disruptions, particularly in remote areas. Authorities have urged residents, tourists, and trekkers to avoid glacier-adjacent zones and riverbanks in the identified locations during this high-risk period. 'Stay informed through official alerts and cooperate with local authorities on any evacuation orders,' the agency advised. The NDMA also encouraged the public to report unusual water flows, glacier movement, or rumbling sounds to local disaster management authorities immediately. The public can download the 'Pak NDMA Disaster Alert' app for real-time notifications and safety guidance.

Hailstorm likely to hit Islamabad, Rawalpindi today: NDMA
Listen to article The National Disaster Management Authority's (NDMA) National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has issued a weather advisory warning of intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and isolated hailstorms expected to strike Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and other regions from Friday evening through Saturday. This alert follows a damaging hailstorm that hit the federal capital and parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), resulting in smashed vehicle windscreens, shattered solar panels, and broken tree branches. The advisory covers the Pothohar region, upper, and central Punjab, cautioning that strong winds and torrential rain could cause infrastructure damage, disrupt travel, and impact agriculture. High-speed winds may uproot trees and lead to temporary power outages, while hailstorms threaten vehicles, rooftops, power lines, and crops — especially installations with glass surfaces. Reduced visibility due to dust and rain may raise the risk of road accidents. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed by downloading the official Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app for real-time updates. Tourists and locals in at-risk areas should monitor verified sources for developments and avoid non-essential travel. Residents are advised to take precautionary measures, secure loose items, and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions.
