Mananchira-Malapparamba road widening work likely to be completed by February 2026

The work on the Mananchira–Malapparamba road, which began in mid-June, is progressing rapidly, with strengthening and levelling of the acquired properties currently under way. At the current pace, the four-laning work is expected to be completed before February 2026. Meanwhile, preparations are being made to construct a flyover at Eranhipalam, the busiest junction on the stretch. The 5.32-kilometre road, developed under the Kozhikode City Road Improvement Project, is part of the proposed Mananchira–Vellimadukunnu Road. The remaining stretch from Malapparamba to Vellimadukunnu will be developed as part of National Highway 766 from Kozhikode to Kollegal. The road is being widened to 24 metres to accommodate four-lane traffic. At present, two-metre-wide drains are being constructed on both sides of the road. These drains will also carry the cable duct. In some parts of the acquired land, the soil quality is poor. To address this, the base is being reinforced with laterite soil brought in from other areas. The demolition of existing buildings, the felling of trees, and ground levelling on the acquired land are nearly complete. The redesigned road will feature a two-metre-wide median in the centre with 8.5-metre carriageways in both directions. The median and road shoulders will be beautified with lawn grass and flowering plants. Land acquisition is complete across the stretch, except for a small plot at Eranhipalam, which is under litigation. The proposed 30-metre-wide flyover at Eranhipalam will extend between the post office and Chulliyod Road junction.

Work on first phase of Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu road widening project to begin on June 16

Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas will inaugurate the work on the four-laning of the Mananchira–Vellimadukunnu Road on June 16. In the first phase, the 5.32-km stretch from Mananchira to Malaparmba will be developed. The land acquired for the road development has already been handed over to Midland Contracting Pvt Ltd., which won the bid for the work. Meanwhile, work on drainages has already begun at Mananchira where the road begins. The plan is to complete the drainage work before the road is laid. Works are carried out mostly at night to avoid traffic congestion and inconvenience to commuters during day time. The widening of the Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu Road is a long-pending dream of city commuters. The Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu Road Action Committee has been fighting a battle for over 15 years to realise the dream, as it seemed a distant one despite the allocation of funds from time to time. The 8.4-km road is being developed under the City Road Improvement Project at an estimated cost of ₹481.94 crore. A total of ₹344.5 crore has already been sanctioned for land acquisition and administrative sanction of ₹137.44 crore has been given for road construction. The first phase is being constructed at a cost of ₹79.90 crore. The road will be 24-metres wide with concrete drainages and will have two-metre wide footpath on both sides and a two-metre median on which streetlights will be installed. As many as 21 bus stops, seven bus bays, a foot overbridge near the Civil Station and traffic signals at junctions are also part of the project. Meanwhile, the Mananchira- Vellimadukunnu Road Action Committee has demanded that tenders be floated for the remaining three-km stretch of the road from Malaparamba to Vellimadukunnu immediately. 'The State government has put the remaining work on the back burner as it is part of the National Highway 766 and hence is to be developed by the NHAI,' it said. However, the Committee said, the NHAI had not yet announced any plans to develop the stretch.

Work on Mananchira–Malapparamba Road to commence soon

The much-awaited development of the Mananchira–Vellimadukunnu Road is likely to begin soon, as the Public Works department has finalised the tender for the works. The department is planning to enter into a contract with Malappuram-based Midland Projects within two weeks, and the work will commence shortly after. In the first phase, the plan is to develop the stretch from the junction of Pavamani Road and Bank Road in Mananchira to the Malapparamba junction, where the road meets NH-66. The 5.32-km stretch is being developed at a cost of ₹80 crore. The road will be 8.5 metres wide, with a two-metre median at the centre and two-metre-wide footpaths on both sides. Additionally, there will be a half-metre-wide space on either side for gardening. The drainage and cable duct, both one metre in width, will run beneath the footpath. Around 350 streetlights will be installed on the median. The Malapparamba–Mananchira stretch is being developed under the City Road Improvement Project. Land acquisition for the project is mostly complete, except for a few small plots that remain under dispute. The project is the result of a long-pending public demand and nearly 15 years of persistent effort by the Mananchira–Vellimadukunnu Road Action Committee, headed by historian M.G.S. Narayanan, who passed away recently. The development of the Mananchira–Malapparamba stretch is expected to be completed by early 2026. However, the remaining portion from Malapparamba to Vellimadukunnu is to be developed by the National Highways Authority of India, as it forms part of National Highway 766 (Kozhikode–Kollegal).
