A47 closed at East Winch after lorry and van collision
Police have closed off a major road after a serious Police closed the A47 Lynn Road in both directions at East Winch between the A10 Hardwick Roundabout and the A1122 at about 14:10 (BST) on collision involved a lorry and a van, according to the travel analytics company, Highways said investigation work was ongoing and the road was expected to remain closed for some time. 345 roads closed in rain-hit Himachal Pradesh
Shimla, A total of 345 roads, including two National Highways, have been closed for vehicular traffic in Himachal Pradesh following heavy rains in the past days, officials said on Wednesday. 345 roads closed in rain-hit Himachal Pradesh Reports of landslides and debris falling on roads leading to road blockades have been pouring in from various parts of the state. In a separate incident, about 65 students from a primary school in the Kasumpti area of Shimla were relocated to a nearby community centre after the school's retaining wall collapsed, posing a danger to the premises, officials said. Monsoon activity remained normal in the state, and light to moderate rains were received at several places since Tuesday evening. Over 26,000 dead in road accidents on NHs in first half of 2025: Gadkari
A total of 26,770 people died in road accidents on National Highways (NHs) across India in the first six months of 2025, according to data shared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in the Parliament on Wednesday. The figures were submitted by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in response to a question by Member of Parliament Dr Sasmit Patra in the Rajya Sabha. Gadkari stated that the numbers were based on data entered by States and Union Territories on the eDAR (electronic Detailed Accident Report) Portal as of July 17, 2025. He added that 53,372 fatalities were recorded on national highways in 2023, and 52,609 in 2024. Further, while addressing concerns about black spots (accident-prone areas), Gadkari stated that as of now: 8,542 black spots have undergone short-term remedial measures 3,144 locations have been addressed through long-term solutions 3,322 spots were found not to require long-term corrective work "Long-term rectification works include improvement of road geometrics, junction improvements, spot widening of carriageway, construction of underpasses/overpasses, etc., which involve pre-construction activities such as land acquisition, forest clearance & utility shifting, which takes significant time," the minister added. AI-based enforcement measures Responding to a query about artificial intelligence (AI)-based surveillance to enforce speed limits and lane discipline, Gadkari said that the government has issued rules in August 2021 for the electronic enforcement of road safety norms at high-risk and high-density corridors. These include: Installation of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) Use of AI-based Video Incident Detection and Enforcement System (VIDES) Integration with platforms such as Rajmarg Yatra, NHAI One App, and e-challan systems ATMS and related systems have already been implemented on stretches such as the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, and Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, among others, he added.

National highway construction slowed to 29 km/day in last fiscal year: Gadkari
NH construction and Bharatmala update Advt Greenfield corridors and GatiShakti By , ETInfra The pace of National Highways (NH) construction in India dropped to 29 kilometres per day in the last financial year, Parliament was informed on per a PTI report, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, said the construction rate during 2023–24 was 34 kilometres per day. The highest pace of construction was recorded in 2020–21, at 37 kilometres per Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is responsible for the development and maintenance of NHs, including expressways. According to Gadkari, the ministry constructed 10,660 kilometres of NHs in 2024–25, 12,349 kilometres in 2023–24, and 10,331 kilometres in 2022–23.'Projects of 26,425 kilometres have been awarded under Bharatmala Pariyojana, out of which 20,770 kilometres have been constructed so far, including 2,967 kilometres during FY 2024–25,' he minister said NH development projects, including access-controlled High Speed Corridors (HSCs) and expressways, are planned in line with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP) said the government is prioritising greenfield access-controlled corridors to improve logistics efficiency. 'Accordingly, 26 greenfield corridors in about 7,500 kilometres have been awarded and, additionally, about 600 kilometres have already been approved,' he this, about 4,800 kilometres have been constructed so far, and 2,636 kilometres are operational. The remaining sections are planned to be operationalised over the next two added that the GatiShakti NMP portal shows economic zones and required infrastructure linkages with the objective of integrating multimodal connectivity projects.
