Former Olympian Kevin Nunis buried in Kuala Lumpur today
FORMER national hockey player and Olympian Muhammad Khairy Nunis Abdullah, better known as Kevin Christopher Nunis, was buried this morning at the Taman Sri Sinar Muslim cemetery at 10.45 am. His remains were first brought to Surau Silaturrahim Taman Segambut SSPK for funeral prayers, attended by around 200 people, including family, friends, colleagues, and local residents. Among those present were his wife, Rahimah Awang Mohd, their three children, and grandchildren. Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal and National Athletes Welfare Foundation (YAKEB) chairman Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail also paid their respects. Subahan described Nunis' passing as a significant loss to Malaysian hockey. 'His contributions were immense, not just as a player but also as a coach in the National Hockey Development Programme (NHDP),' he told Bernama. Nunis, a Negeri Sembilan native, passed away at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) yesterday at 6.45 pm after battling a blood infection for several months. A key player in the 1980s national squad, he represented Malaysia at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Asian Games in India (1982) and South Korea (1986), and SEA Games in Singapore (1983), Jakarta (1987), and Kuala Lumpur (1989).

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national hockey player and Olympian Muhammad Khairy Nunis Abdullah or Kevin Christopher Nunis, who died yesterday, was buried at the Taman Sri Sinar Muslim cemetery at 10:45 am today. Subahan, when met by Bernama, said that Muhammad Khairy Nunis' death is a great loss to the national hockey family. "His services to the Malaysian hockey were immense, not only as a player, as he also contributed greatly to the development of the sport when he was a coach for the National Hockey Development Programme (NHDP)," he said. Muhammad Khairy Nunis, from Negri Sembilan, breathed his last at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital at about 6:45 pm yesterday after several months of treatment due to a blood infection. He was among the main players in the national hockey squad in the 1980s and represented the country at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, as well as at the Asian Games in India (1982) and South Korea (1986), and also the Sea Games in Singapore (1983), Jakarta (1987) and Kuala Lumpur (1989). — BERNAMA

Kevin Nunis, Olympian and hockey coach, passes away
Former Malaysian hockey player, Kevin Christopher Nunis @ Muhammad Khairy Nunis died today at Hospital Kuala Lumpur after a long illness. Nunis, who would have turned 66 on Sept 18, was a member of the national juniors team who finished fourth at the 1979 Junior World Cup in Paris, France. He went on to play in the 1982 World Cup and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, several Southeast Asia Games and the Asian Games. He retired from the international scene in 1989 after earning over 100 caps for Malaysia. Domestically, he represented his home state, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur in the Tun Razak Cup, and for several clubs in the Malaysia Hockey League. He later went into coaching and guided Pahang to the 1996 Malaysia Games gold medal – the only time the East coast claimed top spot. Nunis also coached various clubs in the Malaysia Hockey League and had stints in Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, and Singapore. In February 2021, he was appointed coach of the National Hockey Development Programme, a position he held until his death. Kevin is survived by his wife Rahimah Awang, daughter, Yasmin Natasha, two sons Mohd Daniel and Mohd Karl Iskandar, son-in-law Mohamad Yashar Yatim, daughter-in-law Nurul Nadia Kudus and three grandchildren – Aariz Iman, Ayra Arissa, Nayla Dahlia. Aariz Iman, Ayra Arissa are following in Nunis' footsteps and are members of their school's hockey team. Aariz Iman said he hopes to become a national player 'just like my tokpa (grandfather).'

Olympian Kevin Nunis dies
KUALA LUMPUR: Olympian Kevin Nunis alias Muhammad Khairy Nunis Abdullah died today after he was warded at KL General hospital for 42 days. The former national hockey player from Seremban was 65. Kevin represented Malaysia from 1978 to 1989, and featured in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Kevin had coached several states and was assistant to national coach Terry Walsh He also coached in Singapore from 2000 to 2012. He leaves behind his wife, three children and three grand children. Two of his grandsons, aged 12 and 10, are hockey players. Kevin's son, Karl Iskandar is a sports journalist and Kevin's brother, Graig, is also a sports journalist. Former Olympian and World Cupper Datuk Poon Fook Loke said Kevin's death was a great lost to the nation. "He was a nippy forward and was a great player. He was my roommate when we went for a European tour in 1984." National Hockey Development Programme technical director S. Velappan said Kevin was a coach under the NHDP based at Bukit Jalil from 2023. "I had known him since I was called for national training for the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul. He was a brother to me as he guided me in training. He was soft spoken and cheerful. Kevin had dedicated all his life to hockey as a player and as a national coach. We will miss him," said Velappan. Olympian Maninderjit Singh said: "The victories, defeats, and shared moments become the tapestry of a life well-lived by my fellow Olympian Kevin Nunis. "Great coach and a renowned top player in Malaysia which equals to one of the hockey legends in Malaysian hockey! "Superb striking skill in a circle and his cheeky jokes off the field were the best remembered. A true champion, always in our hearts. Gone, but his spirit of competition lives on.

Malaysian hockey legend Kevin passes away
PETALING JAYA: Former national hockey player and Olympian Kevin Nunis passed away at the age of 65 on Saturday (June 28). Kevin had passed away at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital. He had vast experience in the national hockey team, having been part of the team when they played at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, as well as two Asian Games appearances (1982 India, 1986 South Korea), and represented Malaysia at three SEA Games (1983 Singapore, 1987 Jakarta, 1989 Kuala Lumpur) editions. From Seremban, Kevin started in the national team during his youth, playing at the Junior World Cup with the team in 1979 in Paris. His time in coaching saw him as head coach for the Terengganu state team in 1990, after which he was assistant coach for Terry Walsh in the national team in 1992. He was most recently the head coach of the National Hockey Development Programme in 2021.
