AKPS probes ‘phantom travel' syndicate at KLIA
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has launched a probe into alleged 'phantom travel' syndicate activities at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The investigation focuses on officers suspected of colluding with a group that manipulates immigration records for a fee, allowing travelers—particularly civil servants—to evade detection by employers. In a statement, AKPS emphasized a zero-tolerance stance toward integrity breaches, warning that guilty officers face severe penalties, including dismissal. 'AKPS will not compromise and protect any officer who commits a breach of integrity that tarnishes the good name and image of the department,' the agency stated. The agency is collaborating with the Home Ministry and Immigration Department to tighten entry-point screenings, particularly at KLIA. Measures include expanding autogate usage and deploying the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) with AI technology. 'AKPS believes that the issues of counter setting, flying passports, and phantom travel involving officers can be reduced and eliminated,' the statement added. The probe follows a local media exposé revealing a syndicate that facilitated undisclosed overseas travel for government employees. Reports allege conspiring officers manned special counters to bypass immigration records.

AKPS probes allegations of 'phantom travel' syndicate at KLIA
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is conducting an investigation into allegations of "phantom travel" syndicate activities at the KL International Airport (KLIA). AKPS, in a statement Tuesday (June 24), announced that the investigation is looking into the involvement of officers who are in cahoots with a syndicate that uses a modus operandi of not recording the movements of visitors entering the country at the entry points and charging a certain fee to enable travellers, especially civil servants, to avoid their movements being tracked by their employers. "AKPS will not compromise and protect any officer who commits a breach of integrity that tarnishes the good name and image of the department. "Action and punishment will be taken based on existing legal provisions, including dismissal if the officer who committed the offence is proven guilty," the statement said. AKPS said the agency is working with the Home Ministry and the Immigration Department to improve the process of screening visitors at the country's entry points, especially at KLIA, including the full use of "autogates". "With the full use of autogates for exit clearance, the development of the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) and the use of artificial intelligence technology, AKPS believes that the issues of counter setting, flying passports and phantom travel involving officers can be reduced and eliminated," according to the agency. Recently, a local media portal revealed the existence of a "phantom travel" syndicate at KLIA which allegedly involves government employees who fly abroad without their travel details being shown in immigration records. According to the portal's report, the syndicate's modus operandi involved travellers going through the Immigration process at a special counter, which was manned by conspiring officers. - Bernama

Border agency investigating claims of officers involved in KLIA 'phantom travel' syndicate
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency says it is investigating claims that some of its officers colluded with the 'phantom travel' syndicate operating at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), as reported by a news portal. In a statement today, the agency said it takes the matter seriously. "Following the report, AKPS (the agency) has initiated further investigations into allegations that certain officers may have colluded with the syndicate by failing to record the entry movements of visitors at the country's entry points, in violation of standard operating procedures (SOP). "These acts were allegedly carried out in exchange for payments, allowing the visitors to avoid detection by their employers. "AKPS will not compromise or protect any officer who violates integrity and tarnishes the reputation of the agency. "Action will be taken in accordance with existing laws, including dismissal, if the officer is found guilty," the statement said. The agency said it continues to work closely with the Home Affairs Ministry and Immigration Department to improve visitor screening, particularly at KLIA. "With the full implementation of autogate systems for exit clearance, the development of the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe), and the use of AI technology, AKPS is confident that issues such as counter setting, flying passports, and phantom travel involving officers can be reduced and eliminated." The agency urged the public to report any misconduct involving its officers via email at or in person at its Integrity Unit at Level 5, Setia Perkasa 7, Setia Perkasa Complex, Putrajaya. In a recently published report, the syndicate is alleged to involve government staff flying abroad without their travel details being recorded in the immigration system — a practice known as 'phantom travels'.
