The scholarship will be for a maximum period of four years. The students studying in "Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are not eligible. Similarly, students in residential schools run by the centre/ state government institutions, where facilities like boarding, lodging and education and students studying in private schools are also not eligible. State governments will conduct examinations to select students of their states for the scholarship. The exam will be conducted at the Class 8 level using a Mental Ability Test (MAT) and a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). To appear for the selection test conducted during Class 8, the students need to score at least 55 per cent (50 per cent for SC/ST students) marks or equivalent grade in Class 7. The Mental Ability Test and the Scholastic Aptitude Test will consist of 90 multiple-choice questions each. covering science, social studies and mathematics subjects taught in classes 7 and 8. Each test will be of 90 minutes duration. The students must pass both the tests with at least 40 per cent marks in aggregate (32 per cent marks for SC, ST). School Education Minister holds review meeting in Tiruchi

Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi held a review meeting in Tiruchi on Wednesday focusing on Andhanallur, Manikandam, Tiruchi city, Tiruverumbur and Pullambadi areas. The School Education Department conducted a State Level Achievement Test for students of classes 3, 5 and 8 in government and aided schools in February to identify learning gaps and plan academic interventions. Tiruchi district had secured sixth in the state-level test. Mr. Poyyamozhi urged the school head to work better to make the district achieve first position. He also felicitated V. Rani, headmistress of Panchayat Union Middle School at Tattayyangarpettai, and the English teacher of the school V. Manikandan for helping 18 students of the school clear the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship examination in the academic year 2024-2025. Chief Educational Officer K. Krishnapriya and other senior officials were present.

The results of the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) selection exam for the academic year 2024–25, conducted by the Union government, have been announced. A total of 292 students from Mysuru district have been selected. Although the district was allotted 274 seats under this scheme, an additional 18 students have been selected beyond the allocated quota. Students from classes 9 to 12 who are selected under this scheme will receive ₹12,000 per year, directly credited to their bank accounts. As many as 78 students from Mysuru rural have been selected, besides 51 from Mysuru South and 42 from T Narasipura. The number of students selected in other taluks and blocks includes Nanjangud (34); Hunsur (24); Mysuru North (22); 18 students each from K.R. Nagar and H.D. Kote, and five students from Periyapatna. As many as 98 students from Adarsha Vidyalayas have been selected, while 20 from Karnataka Public Schools (KPS), 58 from Government High Schools, and 45 from Government Higher Primary Schools have been selected. With this, 221 students (75.68%) were from government schools and 71 students (24.31%) were from aided institutions, according to an official release. Students who were selected this year, as well as those already receiving the NMMS in previous years and continuing their studies in classes 9 to 12 in government or aided institutions in 2025–26, can apply through the National Scholarship Portal. Details such as bank account information can be obtained from the NMMS nodal officers at the respective Block Education Offices or from the heads of their educational institutions, said the release from the principal of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Mysuru.

Street vendor's daughter in Karur scores 495 in Class 10, aspires to become a doctor

TIRUCHY: Defying all odds, G Pavithra, the daughter of a street vendor, has scored a total of 495 out of 500 marks in SSLC board examinations in Karur. A student of Chinnadharapuram Government Girls' Higher Secondary School, Pavithra secured centum in three subjects-Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. She scored 98 in English and 97 in Tamil. Pavithra's father Ganesan sells plastic jugs on a pushcart. Her mother, Chitra, is a homemaker. Pavithra wishes to become a doctor. To honour her achievement, the school organised a felicitation ceremony. Pavithra said, 'I always studied keeping in mind my family's financial situation. My teachers always encouraged me and thoroughly explained every subject.' Pavithra also receives educational incentives from both the central and state governments - Rs 1,000 per month for passing the central government's National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship in Class 8, and Rs 1,000 annually for clearing the state's TRUST (Tamil Nadu Rural Students Talent) examination. Pavithra's parents also expressed their joy over her achievement. 'We are proud of our daughter's performance and will fully support her in pursuing her dreams,' said Ganeshan.
