9 Dead in Argentina Amid Record-Breaking Cold Snap

Israa Farhan Argentina is enduring an unprecedented cold wave, with temperatures plunging to historic lows and claiming the lives of at least nine people in recent days, according to a humanitarian group supporting the homeless. The country has experienced a sharp and prolonged drop in temperatures since early July, with the National Meteorological Service confirming a new 34-year low of minus 1.9 degrees Celsius in Buenos Aires earlier this week. The situation was even more severe in surrounding areas, with El Palomar recording minus 7.4 degrees—the coldest in 58 years and the second-lowest since 1935. Unseasonal snowfall blanketed beaches such as Miramar, located 450 kilometers from the capital, in a rare phenomenon not seen for over a decade. In Patagonia's Makinchao, a town of just 3,000 people, some 1,400 kilometers south of Buenos Aires, recent temperatures have ranged between minus 12 and minus 18 degrees. Although severe, they remain below the town's all-time record low of minus 35 degrees set in 1991. The non-governmental organization Proyecto 7, which focuses on aiding Argentina's growing homeless population, reported that nine individuals have died due to exposure since the beginning of the winter season. The exact toll has not been confirmed by official sources, as comprehensive national data is currently unavailable. The bitter cold has amplified the country's ongoing humanitarian challenges, especially among vulnerable communities without access to shelter or heating. As temperatures continue to plummet, experts are urging increased government intervention and community support to prevent further casualties. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Erick downgraded to Category 1 after drenching south Mexico's Oaxaca, Guerrero states

MEXICO CITY, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Hurricane Erick was downgraded to a Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale of storm intensity as it dumped rain on southern Mexico Thursday, causing floods, damage to homes, power outages and roadblocks in parts of Oaxaca and Guerrero states. According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the fifth tropical cyclone of the 2025 season in the Pacific Ocean made landfall at 5:30 a.m. local time as a Category 3 hurricane in the town of Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, with sustained winds of 205 km per hour and gusts of up to 250 km per hour. By 9:15 a.m., the center of the storm was approximately 50 km north-northwest of Punta Maldonado, Guerrero, with maximum sustained winds of 140 km per hour and gusts of up to 165 km per hour, while moving northwest at a speed of 19 km per hour. Despite losing steam, Erick still threatens south Mexico with torrential rains, and heavy rainfall in parts of Chiapas (southeast), southern Veracruz (east), and southern Puebla (center), the weather service said. Gusts of up to 160 km per hour and waves of up to five meters high were expected to hit the states' coastal areas. Mexico's National Coordinator of Civil Protection, Laura Velazquez, said at the government's daily morning press conference that no fatalities have been reported so far. However, she added, the storm has already caused significant damage in at least 14 towns in Oaxaca, including inundating a hospital run by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Huatulco, overflowing rivers in Ixtepec, and washing away roads, downing trees and knocking out power. Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara announced that as a preventive measure, commercial and private flights were suspended at the airports of Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, both tourism destinations located on the coastal strip hardest hit by the hurricane. As it continues its northwestward trajectory, Erick poses a risk to mountainous and coastal areas of southern Mexico, so authorities remain on alert.

REUTERS/Matias Baglietto BUENOS AIRES - Thousands of residents evacuated on Saturday as rains lashed the north of Argentina's Buenos Aires province, a vital agricultural hub, and caused severe flooding. The National Meteorological Service, which issued a red alert for the region on Friday evening, reported rainfall between 150 and 250mm (6-10 inches) between the cities of Zarate and Arrecifes. It warned that storms were "constantly regenerating," with more rain expected. Television images showed residents in Zarate, 100 km (62 miles) from the capital, navigating submerged streets in boats loaded with belongings. A long-distance bus with 44 passengers was trapped by floodwaters on Route 9 near Zarate. "Water started coming in and covered everything," the driver told the local C5N television channel. In San Antonio de Areco, more than 260mm fell in 24 hours – an amount local mayor Francisco Ratto called "rarely surpassed." The heavy precipitation in the key food-exporting region is anticipated to cause further delays to the ongoing soybean harvest. Argentina is the top global exporter of soybean meal and oil, as well as the third-largest exporter of corn and a major wheat exporter. Snowfall Transforms Patagonian Village into a Serene Landscape

Snow transformed the Patagonian mountain village of Caviahue-Copahue in Argentina into a serene scene on April 14. While light and short-lived, the snowfall was enough to dust rooftops and the local thermal resort, local news reported. 'A low-pressure system over the Pacific and the advance of a cold front are causing instability over Patagonia,' the country's National Meteorological Service said. Severe storms cause flooding and destruction on Greek islands of Mykonos and Paros

ADVERTISEMENT A powerful storm lashed the Greek islands of Paros and Mykonos on Monday, triggering widespread flooding and prompting authorities to close schools and impose a ban on all traffic except emergency vehicles. Heavy rainfall in Paros' main towns of Parikia and Naousa – both popular vacation spots – caused floodwaters that surged through streets, carrying cars and debris past whitewashed buildings. Authorities on Paros said 13 people stranded in the storm were taken by firefighters to their homes, adding that no one was reported injured or missing. On Mykonos, where the flooding was less intense, excavators were used to clear a path for floodwater and it gushed past seafront cafes and restaurants. Authorities ordered schools on Paros, Mykonos and two other Aegean Sea islands to remain closed on Tuesday, while the civil protection service sent cell phone alerts instructing residents to stay indoors. Municipal crews and private contractors worked to clear roads blocked by fallen rocks, while emergency services rescued stranded motorists. Several islands near Paros, in the Cyclades group, which is southeast of the mainland in the Aegean Sea, remain under severe weather warnings though Tuesday. The National Meteorological Service has issued updated forecasts of heavy rain and thunderstorms, expected to continue until Wednesday morning, affecting the Ionian Islands, mainland regions, Macedonia, Thrace, the Aegean Sea, and Attica. Residents in affected areas were urged to remain vigilant and follow official safety guidelines amid the storm.
