National defence a shared responsibility: Army Chief

Kota Kinabalu: National defence must be a shared responsibility between the military, government agencies, private sector and the wider public, said Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan. He said the importance of the Whole-of-Government, Whole-of-Society (WoGoS) approach outlined in the Defence White Paper and National Military Strategy 2.0. 'Defence is not the responsibility of the armed forces alone. It involves active participation from every sector of society,' he said at a conferment ceremony for honorary and volunteer Territorial Army officers held here. The ceremony saw the conferment of ranks to several individuals from both public and private sectors, recognising their roles in bridging civil-military cooperation. Managing Director of Boustead Plantations Berhad Datuk Zulkarnain Md Eusope was conferred the rank of Honorary Colonel. He was also appointed as a Participating Member of the Territorial Army Support Committee (Jakpaw) under the Ministry of Defence. Head of the Training Branch at the Reserve Officers Training Unit (Rotu) of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Major Wan Rizaila Wan Mamat Saufi was promoted to the rank of Lt Colonel. He now serves as Deputy Commandant of the unit. City Hall (DBKK) Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah was awarded the rank of Honorary Lt Colonel and appointed Deputy Chairman of Jakpaw Sabah. Also receiving the Honorary Major rank were Director of the Sabah Lands and Surveys Department Prof Datuk Sr Bernard Liew Chau Min, Sabah Deputy State Secretary (Development) Datuk Dr Ahemad Bin Sade and Manager of Eng Hin Giap Hardware Sdn Bhd Chye Chang Kheng. All were appointed as Jakpaw members in their respective states.
