Ahtisham and Romaisa crowned champions

PHOTO COURTESY: STA Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited's (SNGPL) Ahtisham Humiyon clinched the U18 title at the inaugural Sohail University National Tennis Championship which concluded at DA Creek Club, Karachi. He defeated fellow departmental player Hassan Usmani 6-2,6-2 to claim the win. Meanwhile, Romaisa Malik from Punoo Aqil became the U18 girls champion with a win over Bismal Zia 6-4,6-3 in the final of the event. Romaisa and Bismal also played the girls U14 singles final and Romaisa claimed the U14 title as well. In an exciting final of the U14 boys singles event, Peshawar's Junaid Khan outplayed Lahore's Shahbaz 4-9,1-4,4-2. In an all-Lahore girls' U12 final, Eman Shahbaz defeated Shahnoor Umer 2-4,5-4,4-2. Inaya Sayyed was crowned the women's singles champion as she outclassed Eschelle Asif 8-3 in the final. Ahtesham also won the men's singles event, he won against Lahore's Asad Zaman 8-4. Vice Chancellor Sohail University Syed Adnan Sohail was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. He distributed the prizes worth Rs 150000, tennis balls and trophies among the winners and runners up of various events. Sohail appreciated the efforts of Sindh Tennis Association and offered full scholarship for Tennis players with good standing at Sohail University. Ahmed Ali Rajpoot, Khalid Jameel Shamsi and Muhammad Khalid Rehmani also spoke at the closing ceremony. 230 plus entries were received for this week long championship including 20 male and female out station players from Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore, Punoon Aqil and Hyderabad. The remaining results are: Boys Under 12 Singles Final: Rashid Ali Bachani SNGPL beat Shahbaz Lhr 5-3,3-5,4-2 Under 10 Singles Final: Ashtar Alam Khan (Mianwali) beat Usman Umer 4-2,4-2 Seniors 35 plus Doubles Final: Nomi Qamar + Tanveer Muneer beat Zeeshan Malik+ Yasir Fazli 8-1 Men's Doubles Final: Mahateer Muhammad + Raahim Veqar beat Taimoor Ansari + Nameer Shamsi 8-3 Juniors Under 18 Doubles Final: Ahtesham Humiyoon SNGPL + Asad Zaman Lahore beat + Hassan Usmani SNGPL 6-3,6-2 Girls Under 14 Doubles Final: Bismal Zia + Eman Shahbaz beat Shahnoor Umer + Shahreen Umer 4-2,4-2 Boys Under 12 Doubles Final: + M Ayan Lahore beat Ashter Alam Khan + Majid Bachani 4-2,4-1 Boys Under 14 Doubles Final: Junaid Peshawar + Ansarullah beat Rashid Bachani SNGPL + Ebrahim Gill 4-2, 5-3.

Taimoor, Dalia tame rivals to clinch tennis titles

PHOTO: KTA Taimoor Ansari and Dalia Ashraf tamed their respective rivals to clinch the mens and ladies singles titles respectively as the inaugural ISDIN Tennis Championship concluded at the DA Creek Club Karachi on Wednesday evening. Taimoor was stretched to the limit by Mahateer Muhammed in the final, the two players matching each other stroke for stroke. However, Taimoor, with his superior skills on the day, emerged as the winner with scores of 6-4,0-6, 11-9. The ladies singles final was also a well contested affair with Eschelle Asif giving a tough time to Dalia Ashraf. Both the players displayed high class tennis before Dalia emerged victorious by 9-7. In the under-13 singles final, spirited tennis was seen from Meer Abbas Bhagat who outplayed Syed Abdullah 4-1,4-1 to win the title. The event was hosted under the auspices of Karachi Tennis Association Shahrukh Khursheed, Director Operation COSMO Group, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony and distributed cash awards worth rupees 200,000 among the winners and runners up of all the five events. In his speech, Shahrukh thanked KTA and Managment of DA Creek Club for professionally and excellently organizing the tennis championship. He added that ISDIN is a world renowned brand and world number one Alcaraz who recently won the men's singles title at French Open is its brand ambassador. He also announced to hold the National Tennis Championship later this year in winter. Khalid Shamsi, Moulana Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ain, Vice President Sindh Karate Association, also spoke to the sizeable audience at the closing ceremony. They all praised the excellent organisation of the Championship. Muhammad Khalid Rehmani, SVP STA thanked the sponsors and Creek Club management and media for their fullest support to promote tennis in country. He disclosed that 100 plus entries were received for five events. He added that KTA/STA will hold three Nationals in July during summer vacation and one in the month of August in Karachi. Director Sports, Commissioner Karachi's office, Ghulam Mohammad Khan was also present on the occasion among other guests.
