Lenglet to makes permanent move to Atletico after terminating Barcelona contract

France defender Clement Lenglet terminated his contract with Barcelona on Monday and signed a three-season deal with Atletico Madrid, where he was already on loan, the two Spanish clubs announced. 'Clement Lenglet and Atletico de Madrid have reached an agreement over the signing of the French international keeping him at the club until 2028. The centre-back, who played on loan this season, arrives on a free transfer,' said Atletico on their web site. Lenglet won the confidence of Atletico's Argentine coach Diego Simeone this year, making 34 appearances in all competitions. At the end of the season, the 29-year-old was recalled to the France squad by Didier Deschamps for the Nations League Final Four. According to the Catalan press, the amicable termination of his contract should enable Barca, the Spanish champion, to free up its wage bill to comply with the financial fair play regulations and recruit this summer. 'Barcelona and the first team player Clement Lenglet have reached an agreement for the termination of the contract linking the two parties,' said the club in their statement.

Spain v France not a Ballon d'Or decider, says Yamal

Spain's Barcelona striker Lamine Yamal has said the Ballon d'Or award won't be decided by performances on Thursday when he and France's Paris St Germain forward Ousmane Dembele take part in the Nations League Final Four. Spain and France meet in Stuttgart for a place in the final, with the winners facing either Germany or Portugal who play in the other semi-final on Wednesday. Yamal and Dembele have been crucial for club and country this season and the prestigious golden ball trophy could end up with one of them in September during the ceremony in Paris. But the Barca striker challenged a journalist who asked whether Thursday's clash would be decisive for the voting. "If you had to give the Ballon d'Or, who would you give it to - the best player of the year or the one who wins on Thursday?" Yamal told Spanish broadcaster Cadena COPE on Monday. "I'm confident we'll win on Thursday, but whether we win or not, I'd vote for the player of the year because if something happens to me or Dembele on Thursday, who do you vote for? One who plays on Sunday? "I would give it to the best player of the year, and I'd keep it for myself." The competition is tough between the duo, with Dembele winning a Ligue 1, French Cup and Champions League treble, while the 17-year-old Yamal won LaLiga, the Spanish Cup and Spanish Super Cup. Dembele has scored 35 goals in all competitions for club and country this season, while Yamal has netted 19. The nominees for the 2025 edition of the Ballon d'Or award, which covers August 1-July 31, will be announced at the start of August, with the ceremony taking place on September 22. Reuters

Barcelona's Lamine Yamal Says 'Spain Vs France Not A Ballon D'Or Decider'

Last Updated: Barcelona's Lamine Yamal feels the UEFA Nations League won't determine the Ballon d'Or winner, despite strong seasons for him and PSG's Ousmane Dembele. Barcelona striker Lamine Yamal has asserted that Thursday's Nations League Final Four performances will not determine the Ballon d'Or winner, despite both he and Paris St Germain forward Ousmane Dembele competing. Spain and France will meet in Stuttgart for a place in the final, with the victor facing either Germany or Portugal, who play in the other semi-final on Wednesday. Both Yamal and Dembele have been instrumental for their clubs and countries this season, and either could claim the coveted Ballon d'Or trophy at the Paris ceremony in September. However, Yamal countered a journalist who implied Thursday's match could sway the vote. 'If you had to award the Ballon d'Or, would you give it to the best player of the year or the one who wins on Thursday?" Yamal asked Spanish broadcaster Cadena COPE on Monday. 'I'm confident we'll win on Thursday, but regardless of the result, I'd vote for the player of the year. If something were to happen to me or Dembele on Thursday, who would you vote for? The player in Sunday's final? 'I would give it to the best player of the year, and I'd keep it for myself." The competition between the two is fierce, with Dembele having secured a Ligue 1, French Cup, and Champions League treble, while 17-year-old Yamal won La Liga, the Spanish Cup, and Spanish Super Cup. Dembele has scored 35 goals in all competitions for club and country this season, compared to Yamal's 19. The nominees for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, covering the period from 1 August to 31 July, will be announced in early August, with the ceremony scheduled for 22 September. Spain and France meet in Stuttgart for a place in the final, with the winners set to face either Germany or Portugal, who play in the other semi-final on Wednesday. Yamal and Dembélé have been key figures for club and country this season, and the prestigious Ballon d'Or trophy could end up with one of them at the ceremony in Paris this September. However, the Barça striker challenged a journalist who suggested Thursday's clash could prove decisive for the voting. "If you had to give the Ballon d'Or, who would you give it to – the best player of the year or the one who wins on Thursday?" Yamal told Spanish broadcaster Cadena COPE on Monday. Dembélé has scored 35 goals in all competitions for club and country this season, with Yamal netting 19. The nominees for the 2025 edition of the Ballon d'Or – covering performances from 1 August to 31 July – will be announced at the beginning of August, with the ceremony scheduled for 22 September.
