Body found in search for missing Navy sailor who vanished from Virginia base without a trace
A dead body has been found in Norfolk, Virginia amidst a desperate search for a missing female Navy sailor who vanished from her base. Navy sailor and Naval Culinary Specialist Angelina Resendiz, 21, was last seen at her barracks at Naval Station Norfolk on May 29 before she disappeared without a trace. Since then, friends and family have done everything they can to track her down. Almost two weeks after Resendiz's initial disappearance, the Naval Criminal Investigation Service confirmed to Daily Mail that a body had been located in 'an off-base wooded area' of Norfolk. The Norfolk Police Department responded to the call on Tuesday. NCIS could not confirm any further details while the investigation is ongoing, but no arrests have been made. Despite the harrowing update, the family remained optimistic. According to a statement released Tuesday, they were still awaiting DNA results from the discovered body. 'We remain prayerful and hopeful for clarity and resolution,' they wrote. 'We urge anyone with information about Angelina's whereabouts or the circumstances surrounding her disappearance to come forward. Your help could be crucial to bringing her home and providing answers.' The Norfolk Examiner's office took the body to perform an autopsy, with the intention of confirming its identity and cause of death. Police were spotted near Richard Bowling Elementary School around 8pm on June 9. The body was found in a wooded area nearby just off not far from a walking path. Neighbors saw NCIS officials and police carry out a body bag and drive away by 9pm. Resendiz's mother, Esmeralda Castle, even made the journey from her home in Texas to Virginia over the weekend in search of answers. But, Castle went home empty-handed. She told News 3 that she spoke with NCIS and was unable to get any new information. 'I ask them questions, but I don't get very many answers.' Castle and her family put up a GoFundMe page to aid with the search for her daughter. There, they hoped to raise money for any resources that could help the family locate her. Resendiz's family released a statement Tuesday The family also wrote, 'With all of the technology at the Navy's disposal, there is no reason for a sailor to go missing or stay missing.' 'The Naval base is in a wooded area, and NCIS has refused to tell Angie's mother anything about the search. 'Angie's mother hopes to search these woods surrounding the base and hopes to have a protest calling for reform of the US Military's treatment of missing women cases.' The 21-year-old's mother did tell local news stations that officials don't think Resendiz left the Naval base without permission. Although she had struggled with mental health issues in the past, Castle believed her daughter always intended to return. 'Her fan was still on, and she had personal items like food and a yoga mat untouched.' 'One way or another we will see each other again,' she said. The 21-year-old's Navy base is the headquarters and home port of the U.S. Navy's Fleet Forces Command. Her barracks were located at Miller Hall. Police have described her as a 5-foot-tall Hispanic woman with brown eyes and black hair. Officials say she weighs about 110 pounds. She goes by the name Angie.
