Bhagalpur: Tight security arrangements have been made across Bhagalpur district for Muharram. The district administration has prohibited playing of disc jockey (DJ) and displaying of banned weapons during the Muharram processions, in view of the district being a communally sensitive. "Ten control rooms have been set up to monitor the police patrolling and disseminating information during the three-day Muharram. Around 30 CCTV cameras have been installed in the city areas to monitor Muharram processions, besides drones will keep an eye on the processions and activities of antisocial elements," said DM Nawal Kishor Choudhary after chairing a meeting of the district peace committee, and reviewing the security arrangements. He said the state disaster response force (SDRF) team at district level is also ready in view of any eventuality arising due to the flood and other natural calamity at ponds where the tazias are immersed at the end of the processions. A directive to deploy divers and expert swimmers has been given to the officers concerned, he added. At the meeting, the DM directed the electricity department to remove the hanging overhead electricity wires so that the tazia procession is taken out without any difficulty. The engineers and officials of the PHED and Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been directed to ensure that the tube-wells and hand-pumps on the route of procession remain functional. "We will ensure peaceful observation of Muharram in the district. We have asked members of the peace committee to ensure that unnecessary gathering or hooliganism do not take place on the routes of the tazia processions," the DM said. Bhagalpur SSP Hriday Kant said that the senior officials of the district police, SHOs and other police personnel have been directed to ensure peace during the Muharram. Drones and CCTV would monitor the events, he added.

1 2 3 Bhagalpur: The district administrations of Bhagalpur and Banka are making elaborate arrangements for the month-long Shrawani Mela, to be held from July 11 to Aug 9, during which approximately 50-55 lakh pilgrims visit Sultanganj to fetch holy Ganga water and trek barefoot to Baba Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar in neighbouring Jharkhand, carrying kanwars. The Hindu pilgrims, known as kanwariyas , reach Sultanganj in Bhagalpur from across India, as well as neighbouring countries like Bhutan and Nepal, to fetch holy Ganga water and trek barefoot to Deoghar via routes falling in Banka district. In connection with this, the district officials, including Bhagalpur DM Nawal Kishor Choudhary, city SP Shubhank Mishra, DDC Pradeep Singh, sadar subdivisional officer Vikash Kumar, along with Sultanganj MLA Lalit Narayan Mandal, nagar parishad chairperson Rajesh Kumar Guddu and his deputy Neelam Devi, have reviewed the mela preparations at Sultanganj and the trek routes. They reviewed the preparations made by different departments like road, electricity, health, public health engineering, water resources, food safety, information and public relations among others. Choudhary directed the officials of various departments to ensure that the devotees do not face any problem during the pilgrimage. Different departments have been asked to make arrangements in accordance with the directives within a week," the DM said. He directed the electricity department to make proper arrangements and improve their infrastructure for an uninterrupted power supply to the Sultanganj region and on the trek routes. The officials concerned were also instructed to ensure adequate street lights on trek routes and at the embankments at Sultanganj Siri Ghat, besides fencing/barricading the area. A direction to the public health engineering department was given to ensure sanitation and availability of pure drinking water through tankers, hand pumps and other means. The officials concerned were also asked to ensure availability of hygienic food and check the rates of the products sold at the shops en route. The health department officials were asked to ensure round-the-clock services, besides the police were instructed to regulate the movement of heavy and big commercial vehicles en route to Sultanganj and on the trek routes to Deoghar. Directives were given to put a layer of fine sand on the trek route, of which nearly 100 kilometres fall in Banka district, for the convenience of the barefoot devotees. Instructions were also given to the officials to cover drains en route and marking them with yellow paint, provide ambulances at Namami Gangey and Siri ghats at Sultanganj, earmark 'panda chowki' and register pandas (pastors), and make parking arrangements. After collecting the holy water of the Ganga at Sultanganj, where the river becomes 'uttarvahini' (flow turning towards north), the devotees trek barefoot nearly 105 kilometres, carrying kanwars on their shoulders, while chanting 'bolo bam'. On reaching Deoghar, the devotees pay obeisance to Lord Shiva by pouring the holy water on the Shivalinga — one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country — and seek blessings.

Bhagalpur ramps up HPV vaccination drive to protect girls

Bhagalpur: District administration has directed the health department to ensure that interested girl students between the age group of 9 and 14 years are administered free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination at the sadar hospital and JLNMCH on working days from 9.00am to 4.00pm. This initiative will safeguard the girls from cervical cancer. During a review meeting held on Tuesday, DM Nawal Kishor Choudhary issued the directives. The special HPV vaccination drive, an important programme under 'Mukhyamantri Balika Cancer Pratirakshan Yojana' (MBCPY), was launched in the district recently. The DM said the vaccine is safe and it is a preventive measure for the girls from developing cervical cancer later in their lives. He urged the family members of the girls to accomplish the objective of the vaccination drive. Aadhaar card and school identity card, for the verification of the age of the schoolgirls, are mandatory for vaccination, said the DM. He also asked the health officials to submit the data of vaccinations done so far. Nearly 400 schoolgirls have already been given the HPV vaccines at the OPD of sadar hospital and JLNMCH so far, said district immunisation officer (DIO), Dr Dhananjay Kumar. He said cervical cancer accounts for 17% deaths because of malignancy among adult women. "Our teams are creating awareness among the schoolgirls while visiting the schools and interacting with them, teachers and guardians," said the DIO. District education officer (DEO), Rajkumar Sharma, said directives to the principals and in charges of the high schools and middle schools have been given to make available the data of the schoolgirls in the age group of 09-14 at their respective schools so that the free HPV vaccines are administered to them.
