Ghaziabad vigilantes pressure KFC, Nazeer to halt non-veg food in Vasundhara during Kanwar Yatra

Two restaurants in Ghaziabad's Vasundhara locality — including a KFC outlet — came under pressure from a self-styled vigilante group on Thursday for serving non-vegetarian food during the Kanwar Yatra , reported TOI. The group, led by a man with a long criminal record, demanded that the outlets switch to vegetarian-only menus, despite not being located on the designated Kanwar route and not falling under the government's official meat-sale restrictions. According to eyewitnesses, the group harassed staff and customers, demanding that no non-vegetarian items be served during the religious yatra. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Is Why Smart People Put Baking Soda in Their Shampoo Read More Undo According to the report, under pressure, the KFC outlet complied and displayed a notice that read 'we are serving only veg.' Nikita Rana, manager of the KFC branch, said the outlet closed for several hours and resumed operations later in the day with a vegetarian-only menu . 'It impacted business significantly. KFC is known for chicken, and more than 70% of our footfall dropped,' she said. Live Events At the Nazeer outlet nearby, manager Mahesh Kumar Bagel said a crowd gathered outside the restaurant, questioning staff over their menu. 'We explained we were not violating any rules, but they wouldn't listen. We had to shut down for over five hours,' he said, adding that no formal complaint was filed since there was no physical harm, though they would consider it if harassment continued. No Official Restriction, Yet Business Disrupted As per government directives, only shops selling raw meat directly along the Kanwar route are required to close during the Yatra. Both KFC and Nazeer are located away from the official route and are not subject to these restrictions. Despite this, Bhupendra Tomar — also known as Pinky Choudhary — who leads the group, claimed they would continue to enforce a vegetarian-only rule during the Yatra, offering restaurants a 'choice' to remain open if they complied, TOI further reported. Tomar, 49, is no stranger to controversy. He has at least 25 cases registered against him across Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, and Delhi. From vandalising AAP's office in 2014 to being arrested for communal sloganeering at Jantar Mantar in 2021, Tomar has been repeatedly associated with acts of intimidation and public disorder. Most recently, in April, members of his outfit defaced a portrait at Ghaziabad railway station, mistaking Bahadur Shah Zafar for Aurangzeb. Police Respond, FIR Registered Though neither restaurant filed a complaint, police took suo motu cognisance of the incident. An FIR was registered at Indirapuram police station under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for disobedience of public orders. DCP Nimish Patil confirmed that police teams have been formed to identify and arrest those involved. 'We responded immediately on Thursday. Traffic was disrupted in the area as well. KFC has resumed regular service, and we've assured them of police support if needed,' Patil said. Customers who turned up on Friday expecting to order from the usual menu expressed frustration. 'No one should dictate what we eat,' said Soumya Banerjee, a disappointed customer. 'I respect religious sentiments, but no one has the right to interfere in personal choices,' added Kunal Verma, a Vasundhara resident. Meanwhile, TOI sources in Ghaziabad police confirmed that while proceedings under the Goondas Act had previously been initiated against Tomar, the process was not completed due to protests by his supporters. Police Commissioner J Ravinder Goud said action against Tomar will be reviewed based on his past record.

Right-wing outfit forcibly shuts KFC outlet in Ghaziabad over sale of meat during Sawan

A group of men allegedly affiliated with the Hindu Raksha Dal forcibly shut down a KFC outlet in Ghaziabad's Vasundhara on Thursday, police said. They allegedly arrived at the food outlet and protested against the sale of meat during the holy month of Sawan and the ongoing Kanwar Yatra. A purported video of the incident, which surfaced online on Friday, showed a group of men raising slogans like 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Jai Shri Ram', as they protested in front of the outlet's entrance, before forcibly pulling down the shutters. Police said the outlet does not fall on the officially demarcated Kanwar Yatra route and that there is no government order banning the sale of non-vegetarian food in the area. 'Eight to 10 boys gathered and staged a minor protest. The outlet does not fall on the Kanwar route. An FIR has been registered and the group is being identified,' Indirapuram SHO Ravendra Gautam said. 'An incident came to our notice on July 17, where some individuals created a ruckus at a food outlet and tried to shut it down. Police immediately reached the spot, dispersed the group, and ensured normal operations resumed at the restaurant,' said ACP Abhishek Srivastav. A Nazeer outlet in the area has also been allegedly shut down by the same group.

Food-policing by Ghaziabad outfit forces KFC outlet to go vegetarian

Ghaziabad : An outfit with a track record of vandalism, led by a man with more than two dozen FIRs against him in Delhi-NCR, went food policing at two eateries in the city, one of them a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlet, warning them against serving non-vegetarian items during kanwar yatra. The KFC outlet at Sector 11 in Vasundhara gave in to intimidation from the vigilante group on Thursday morning and put up a notice, saying 'we are serving only veg'. The other eatery targeted was Nazeer, which has an outlet in the same area. The official govt order limits restrictions during the yatra to shops selling raw meat along the designated kanwar route, which have been asked to close. Incidentally, neither of the two eateries targeted are on the kanwar route. But no one has yet been taken into custody. The outfit is headed by Bhupendra Tomar alias Pinky Choudhary, who said they would not allow any eatery to serve non-veg food during kanwar yatra, but would "give them the option of staying open for business if they agreed to serve only veg". Nikita Rana, manager of the KFC outlet, told TOI they downed shutters after the Thursday morning incident around 11.30am and reopened at 4pm, with only vegetarian items on the menu. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy the Dip: Top 5 Dividend Stocks with Growth Potential Seeking Alpha Read More Undo "This affected footfall by more than 70% as KFC has a primarily chicken-based menu," she said. Mahesh Kumar Bagel, manager of the Nazeer outlet, which is barely 50 metres from KFC, said more than 100 individuals crowded the eatery and began harassing the staff, asking them why non-vegetarian food was being served to customers. "We called the police and tried to explain govt guidelines on sale of meat to them. Besides, we are not selling anything in the open and we are a reputable restaurant chain. The staff also showed them that we follow all rules on maintaining hygiene. But they didn't listen. Nazeer is a non-veg food outlet and our customers come here for that. Due to the protest, the shop was closed for more than five hours," Bagel said, adding he had not filed a police complaint because none of his employees had been harmed but would do so if an incident disrupting their business happened again. Customers who came to KFC for chicken zinger burgers on Friday morning asked why it was not being served. Several of them TOI spoke to condemned "efforts to control what we eat" and asked govt to take suitable action to discourage any such practice. Rahul Kumar, a BTech student and local resident who had come for a quick snack, said, "How can some random people decide what I eat? When I came here, I saw a notice on the gate that the outlet was only serving veg. When I asked them why, the staff didn't have a clear answer." Soumya Banerjee, who also returned disappointed, said, "Every human being has their own dietary choices, and no one can force it on another. I respect every sentiment related to culture, but other people cannot interfere in my choice of food." She asked how licensed shops following govt rules could be browbeaten like this. Kunal Verma, a local resident who was at Nazeer on Friday morning, said, "This is a good distance from the kanwar route. People do such things to come into the limelight for their political agendas. There are thousands of people living in this area in Vasundhara. If anyone has any problem, they will tell the police." Nimish Patil, DCP of Trans-Hindon, told TOI a police team was dispatched to the spot on Thursday as soon as information about the incident came in. "We didn't receive any complaint from either outlet. But we took cognisance and filed an FIR. Traffic on the road was also disturbed. The FIR has been registered at Indirapuram police station under section 223 (disobedience of order promulgated by a public servant) of BNS. Police teams have been formed to nab the accused. We are trying to identify them," he said. Patil said KFC staff members had gone back to their regular menu after 3pm on Friday. "We assured them of police help if they require it," he said. Tomar (49) has 25 cases against him at several police stations in Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar and Delhi. In 2006, the first FIR was filed against him at Sahibabad police station in a case of cheating. In 2014, an FIR was filed against him and members of his outfit for vandalising AAP's office in Kaushambi. In 2021, Tomar was arrested for alleged communal sloganeering at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. In Aug 2024, he and an accomplice Badal Singh were arrested in Ghaziabad for allegedly attacking and damaging shanties of people who they accused of being Bangladeshi illegals. On April 18 this year, members of his outfit blackened with spray paint a portrait of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, at Ghaziabad railway station, believing it to be of Aurangzeb. Railway police lodged an FIR against unknown persons in the matter. Police commissioner J Ravinder Goud told TOI he will look at cases lodged against Tomar and take action according to the law. Sources said Ghaziabad police had started proceedings under sections of the Goondas Act against Tomar, but the process was not completed after members of his outfit staged a protest.
