NPA probes withdrawal of GBV case against PSL's Ace Ncobo

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is probing domestic violence claims against Premier Soccer League (PSL) general manager Andile 'Ace' Ncobo. He was arrested on Saturday, 28 June, for allegedly assaulting his partner in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni. The incident was allegedly witnessed by a minor. Ncobo appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 8 July. He was released on a warning after his partner withdrew the charges against him. Despite this , the NPA will continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal statements. Ncobo's partner filed several statements, claiming there are no threats against her life. She also described the former International Association Football Federation (FIFA) referee as a 'good man'. She also claimed that he had never been violent in the past. The investigation comes amid a separate fraud and money laundering case involving Ncobo and his wife, Salomie Twaise. The case centres on a R15 million donation meant for school construction projects in the Eastern Cape. According to the NPA, the couple allegedly engaged in a fraudulent scheme to secure funding from the Petroleum Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA). The funds were allocated through PetroSA's Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme, which supports disadvantaged schools, institutions, and disaster management efforts. Ncobo was granted bail of R50,000, while Twaise was granted bail of R30,000. The case has been postponed for further investigation. NPA continues investigation into Ace Ncobo

Former referee Ace Ncobo appeared at the Kempton Park Magistrate's court on Tuesday for a charge of assault under the domestic violence act. Image: Timothy Bernard / Independent Newspapers The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it will continue its investigation against former PSL referee Andile "Ace" Ncobo, who was on Tuesday released on a warning after his partner withdrew assault and GBVH charges against him. According to the NPA, Ncobo was arrested on domestic violence charges on June 28. Ncobo is reported to have assaulted his girlfriend, an incident that was allegedly witnessed by a minor in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, last month. Ncobo appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, where Magistrate Bella Letoaba stated that after the victim furnished the court with an affidavit and withdrawal statements, the court was satisfied that, in the interest of justice, Ncobo should be released on a warning and not bail. Meanwhile, the NPA continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal statements. "The accused presented evidence in support of his bail application, and an affidavit was filed, while the respondent also filed several withdrawal statements, stating there are no threats against her life. "In the second statement, the complainant requests the court to grant the applicant bail as she believes that the accused is a good man who will not assault her, as in all the years they have been together, he has never been violent," the magistrate read from her judgment. NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, revealed that the NPA no longer withdraws their investigations on domestic abuse charges until they have investigated the circumstances of the victim's withdrawal statements. "As you might be aware, under the Domestic Violence Act, that act on its own was promulgated to afford maximum protection to victims of GBV; hence, as the NPA, we have given directives to our prosecutors not to withdraw cases of domestic violence even at the behest of the complainant. As such, we are continuing with the investigation," Mjonondwane stated outside court. As a result of the ongoing investigation, the matter was postponed to August 3, with Ncobo given strict bail conditions not to interfere with the investigation and the alleged victim. Reflecting on the outcomes of the case, Leon Khoza, speaking on behalf of Ncobo, said it was still too early to gauge his client's response to the outcome as the matter is still under investigation. "Today was a bail application, and my client was released under strict conditions as the matter is still subject to further investigation at this stage. As a result, we cannot pre-empt what will happen. In court, the complainant indicated that she no longer wanted to proceed further with the case, and some statements were filed in this regard. When it comes to domestic violence matters, the State sometimes does not withdraw the charges immediately, and with the current investigation, we will take things from there," he stated. Ncobo's domestic violence legal woes come just weeks after the former referee, alongside his wife, Salomie Twaise Ncobo, appeared in the Bellville Magistrate's Court on three counts of fraud and money laundering relating to a R15m donation for school construction projects in the Eastern Cape. In this matter, the State is accusing the pair of embarking on a scheme to fraudulently acquire money from the Petroleum Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa SOC Limited (PetroSA), allegedly, in a way that favoured them, their family members, and entities they had a vested interest in. PSL silent on action against GM Andile Ncobo amid fraud charges

General Manager of the Premier Soccer League and former international referee, Andile Ncobo, and his wife, Salomie, appeared in the Bellville Magistrate's Court in the Western Cape. They are facing fraud and money laundering charges for allegedly embezzling millions of rand for a project in the Eastern Cape. Image: Ayanda Ndamane / Independent Media THE Premier Soccer League (PSL) remains mum on any action it will take against its general manager, Andile 'Ace' Ncobo, who faces charges of fraud and money laundering. Ncobo and his wife Salomie appeared at the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Monday where they were granted bail of R50 000 and R30 000 respectively. Ncobo, who has been a host on the Extra Time TV show on Supersport, DSTV channel 202, for the past 13 years, has since announced his resignation from the show. According to the prosecution, the couple is accused of orchestrating a scheme to unlawfully secure funds from the Petroleum Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa SOC Limited (PetroSA) for their personal benefit, as well as for relatives and organisations in which they held a financial stake. PetroSA operated a Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative, designed to distribute financial assistance to under-resourced schools, non-profit institutions, and disaster relief efforts. The initiative primarily supported causes related to education, healthcare, community development, and environmental sustainability. In 2008, Gangatha Junior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape applied for funding from PetroSA to improve its infrastructure, including new classrooms, labs, and sports facilities. PetroSA approved a R13 million donation, and an unregistered entity called King's Gangatha Building Trust was set up to handle the project. Ncobo allegedly took charge of the construction from November 2008 to September 2009, despite not being officially appointed or authorised by the school to do so. The Hawks had been investigating the case for over a decade. While Ncobo announced his resignation from the Extra Time TV show on Supersport, he also said he was innocent. On his Facebook page, Ncobo shared a message with his viewers. 'For the past 13 years, we've been together every Monday evening. We developed our love-hate relationship as real football people always do. You loved me when my analysis favoured your club, and hated me the very next week when it did not. Through it all, you were educated on the intricacies of refereeing decisions,' he wrote. He further explained what he did when he got out of the courtroom. 'Sadly, the very first thing I did when I stepped out of court was to call my SuperSport Football boss and informed him that I will immediately cease to be part of the show in the foreseeable future, as I do not want my personal circumstances to tarnish the valuable role that the show plays within the football ecosystem, as well as respect for the Supersport brand,' Ncobo said. He remained adamant that he is innocent.

PSL boss 'Ace' Ncobo faces fraud and money laundering charges

PSL General Manager and former FIFA referee Aldrin Andile Baldwin 'Ace' Ncobo and his wife, Salomie Twaise Ncobo, appeared in the Bellville Magistrates Court on Monday, on fraud and money laundering charges tied to over R15 million in misappropriated funds. The couple faces three counts of fraud and one of money laundering related to donations made by the Petroleum Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa SOC Limited (PetroSA) for school infrastructure projects in the Eastern Cape. According to the State, the accused orchestrated a scheme to secure PetroSA funding under false pretenses, diverting funds for personal gain and entities linked to them. PetroSA, through its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme, had committed millions to aid disadvantaged schools, focusing on educational facilities, health, community enhancement, and environmental initiatives. In 2008, Gangatha Junior Secondary School applied for funding to upgrade its facilities. PetroSA agreed to a R13 million donation to construct classrooms, labs, and other infrastructure. An unregistered trust – King's Gangatha Building Trust – was created to facilitate the project, with Ncobo allegedly assuming control despite having no official appointment by the school. Construction began in November 2008 and ended in September 2009. However, a later investigation by PetroSA's Risk and Compliance Department found that the quality of work was subpar and valued at only R5.9 million, far below the R13 million disbursed. Remedial work was estimated to cost an additional R398 363. A similar pattern emerged in a separate project involving Nqadu Pre-Grade R School. PetroSA approved a R485 450 grant, with Salomie Ncobo as the contact. Ncobo claimed to be funding the work personally, but the school received no furniture or equipment. Submitted documentation, including board member details and signatures, was found to be falsified. Funds from both projects were allegedly funneled into various accounts connected to Ncobo, including Gangatha Projects, Eseswe Projects, and the Aldrin Andile Baldwin Ncobo Charity Institute – all of which are unregistered entities. Only Ncobo Development ILE Projects was found to be properly registered, with Ncobo holding full ownership. The couple was arrested and granted bail, with Aldrin Ncobo posting R50 000 and Salomie Ncobo R30 000. The case has been postponed to 29 May 2025 for further investigation. PetroSA continues to assess the financial damage, which includes an additional R20 093 required to remedy defects at Nqadu Pre-Grade R School. In a statement shared on Facebook, 'Ace' Ncobo proclaimed his and his wife's innocence, asserting that they believed the prosecution is malicious in nature. 1. Although we believe that this is a malicious prosecution, we welcome the decision of the NPA to carry out its constitutional duties without favour. 2. We appreciate the overwhelming messages of support and wish to assure our family, friends, and the supportive public that their support is not misplaced. We have never been involved in any criminal conduct in all the projects our company did. 3. All projects we were appointed to do were completed in record time and to the highest standards. 4. The particular project which is made part of this matter is a school that we built almost two decades ago. It still stands proudly as an asset of that community. 5. We have full confidence in the justice system of our country, and we know that the court will judge for itself that this matter should never have been brought before it in the first place. 6. We humbly request to be given space to deal with this matter without any further public or media engagements beyond this statement.
