Recurring blockage of sewer on 11th Avenue will be fixed
Ward 107 councillor Floyd Ngwenya has confirmed that a blocked sewer on 11th Avenue, Alexandra, has been reported to Johannesburg Water (JW) and is set to be attended to on July 16. The announcement follows over a week of mounting complaints from residents grappling with the foul stench and hazardous waste. The blockage, located just metres away from Sanele Ndaba's store, has been a recurring issue. Ndaba said the drain first became clogged more than two weeks ago. 'I called JW to log a ticket and got a reference number. A few days later, Ngwenya came, escalated the matter, and it was fixed.' However, within 24 hours, the same sewer reportedly blocked again. With sewage gushing into the street, visible faeces swirled in the stream and used tissues clung to the tar, creating an unhygienic environment that has impacted Ndaba's food business. 'It affects the customers because it is close to the store.' Resident Walter Matlou, who often escalates service delivery complaints, said he had notified Ngwenya again, but had received no feedback for four days. Despite this, Matlou expressed confidence in the councillor's usual responsiveness. On the day Alex News visited, the situation revealed deeper behavioural challenges. One senior resident was seen dumping a bucket filled with water and waste into the flowing sewage. When asked whether she feared blocking the storm water drain, she replied: 'If you look inside [the storm water drain], you will find beds, and tons of plastics. This is Alexandra, no one can fix it.' Ngwenya responded that he was only aware of the earlier blockage. 'Please note that I am aware of the situation. I reported it last time, when it got blocked. I was not made aware of the fact that now it's blocked [again]. I've reported it now. It will be attended to tomorrow.' Sophie Ndaba to help young designers turn creativity into business at Basha Uhuru
Fashion icon and entrepreneur Sophie Ndaba has curated the Business of Fashion workshop at the Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival. Image: Supplied Former "Generations" actress Sophie Ndaba is set to facilitate the Business of Fashion workshop at this year's Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival. This won't be Ndaba's first time hosting a session at the festival; she previously led a wellness workshop, but this time, she's focusing on equipping the youth with a realistic understanding of the fashion industry as a business. 'I always say to young people, it's always about access. When you're part of a brand such as Basha, you already have access to the youth who need this advice,' Ndaba told IOL. 'For me, that was the most exciting part, having direct access to young people who need to be empowered.' The 51-year-old explained that her goal goes beyond simply hosting a fashion show; she wants to offer something lasting and meaningful. 'We want young people to see themselves as a business. Yes, they are creative, but how do they turn that creativity into a sustainable business?' 'It's about empowering young people to be self-sufficient,' she added. Curated by Ndaba herself, the workshop will feature two panels: one consisting of founders from well-known fashion brands such as Otiz Seflo and Tallit Wear; the other will include an advisory panel of industry experts who will guide attendees on matters like business registration and legal compliance. "Young people often think they don't need short-term insurance simply because they're driving a second-hand car; however, if something happens, where will they get the money to replace it? 'When you're running a business, that's when you need to think about things like having a will, not because you're planning for the end, but to protect the empire you're building for your family.' The panel will also feature PR specialist Simpiwe Majola, who will unpack how to transform a business into a recognizable brand. Designers will discuss the tough decisions entrepreneurs face, such as whether to offer ready-to-wear collections or leverage social media as a primary sales channel. They will also weigh the pros and cons of running an online store versus investing in a physical retail space. 'The business of fashion is about long-term thinking, sustainability, and growth. It's about building a brand from the ground up, one that brings consistent cash flow over time,' Ndaba explained. With years of business experience under her belt, from running a catering company to managing a wedding planning business, Ndaba knows the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. 'This workshop is designed to mentally prepare them for the reality of the fashion business: there will be losses, and there will be gains. Are you ready for both?' Having faced personal and professional setbacks, including losing it all, battling depression, and rebuilding from scratch, Ndaba speaks from hard-won experience. 'My journey of loss taught me valuable lessons, especially because I grew up without mentors. No one ever said, 'This is how you run a business.' 'Everything I built was self-taught. I can imagine if I had such mentorship, then where would I be?"

Puff Adder captured in Redcliffe: Local resident takes swift action
A resident of Redcliffe, KwaZulu-Natal, confronted a potentially life-threatening situation when he discovered a Puff Adder—a snake notorious for its lethal venom—lurking between the safety of his security gate and the threshold of his home. Recognising the danger, the resident contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) for assistance. Upon receiving the call, RUSA Area Manager, Nkosinathi Ndaba, was swiftly dispatched to the scene. According to a statement from RUSA, Ndaba arrived to find the Puff Adder coiled and motionless, embodying the stealthy threat this snake species is known for. With a steady hand, Ndaba safely captured the creature, ensuring the resident's safety and alleviating the immediate concern for the neighbourhood. Post-capture, Ndaba transported the now-contained Puff Adder back to RUSA headquarters for a thorough inspection. Staff members examined the snake for any potential injuries, showcasing the diligence of RUSA in their duty of care, not only for residents but also for wildlife in distress. The Puff Adder, vulnerable and fearful, was then seamlessly handed over to Ndlondlo Reptile Park, where it would be cared for and monitored in a safe environment.

Orlando Pirates move fast in market with another signing in Ndaba
Orlando Pirates have kicked off their squad overhaul in style by securing the signature of promising defender Nkosikhona Ndaba from Richards Bay. As the club continues its search for a new head coach following Jose Riveiro's departure, they aren't waiting around to strengthen the team. Ndaba, 22, has turned heads with his standout performances in the Betway Premiership this season. After earning a promotion to the senior team in 2023 from Richards Bay's DStv Diski Challenge side, his growth has been nothing short of impressive. Pirates wasted no time locking down the left-back, who is expected to play a critical role in the new campaign. This move also hints at big changes in the club's backline, especially amid speculation that long-time captain Innocent Maela may not return to action next season. Ndaba's arrival could mark the beginning of a new era on the left flank. In another bold move, the Buccaneers have swooped in for **Masindi Nemtajela**, a rising star from Marumo Gallants who exploded onto the scene this past season. At just 23, the talented midfielder has become one of the league's most sought-after young players, and Pirates have moved quickly to secure his services. 'He is only 23 and has shown great potential. They want to sign him (Nemtajela) now because he is already competing easily in the league,' a source revealed to *The South African*. 'Yes, it will be a five-year contract — initially it was three. Masindi will be a Buccaneer soon.' Nemtajela's signing marks a strategic investment in youth and skill as Pirates prepare for a fresh chapter. The long-term deal also signals the club's intent to build a core of dynamic young talent. While the club brings in fresh blood, several exits are also on the horizon. Players with expiring contracts are expected to depart as the team trims down to accommodate new faces and reset under an incoming coach. Pirates' early transfer activity shows serious intent. The Ndaba and Nemtajela acquisitions not only strengthen key positions but also energize fans who are eager to see a revitalized squad take shape. With a new coach incoming and major signings like Ndaba and Nemtajela secured, Orlando Pirates are building a squad that could dominate the next season. The message is clear, the Buccaneers mean business. Can these two new signings hit the ground running at Pirates? Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
