San Bernardino County deputy arrested for deadly boat crash on Colorado River

A San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputy was arrested on Friday for a deadly boat crash on the Colorado River while allegedly intoxicated. The crash happened a little after 5:30 p.m. on Friday just south of the Needles Bridge on the river in Needles, according to a news release from SBSD. "A 22-foot Cheetah deck boat, operated by Bruce Southworth, was traveling downriver when it impacted an 18-foot Sanger vessel that was adrift on the river," the release said. The crash left the victim, 38-year-old La Verne resident Weston Stewart, with major injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died, deputies said. "Alcohol appears to be a factor in this incident," SBSD said. Southworth, of Yucaipa, was arrested at the scene and booked for negligent use of a watercraft while intoxicated causing injury. On Saturday, department officials confirmed that Southworth is a deputy and that he has been placed on administrative leave as a result of the crash. They say that the investigation remains ongoing and that any additional information will be provided to the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office. It's unclear if there were any other injuries in the collision. In 2017, Southworth was one of six San Bernardino first responders awarded the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor by President Donald Trump for their response to the 2015 workplace shooting that left 14 people dead. Anyone who knows more is asked to contact SBSD at (760) 326-9200.

Electric scooters pose dangerous threat to St. George children, police say

ST. GEORGE, Utah () — With summer right around the corner, police say St. George kids are already back on their electric scooters in full force. 'It doesn't take very much.' Sergeant Jeremy Needles with the St. George Police Department told ABC4. Police say kids as young as 8 years old have been spotted on electric scooters, which can pose a real danger for young kids, especially when riding near cars. 'When you come up to an intersection, you need to make sure that you, as the scooter rider, stop and make eye contact with the drivers,' Needles said. 9-year-old dead after golf cart crash in St. George , a local company that films accidents at Utah's most dangerous intersections, caught one such accident on camera. The incident, which took place on June 3 at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Mall Drive in St. George, shows a rider approaching the crosswalk; however, a driver continues through the intersection, colliding with a young person's scooter. 'As a driver, look both ways, even if you're making rent or double check that sidewalk, double check the right side because there could be a runner, a bicyclist, or a scooter operator that could have snuck into your area before you can make that turn,' Needles told ABC4. Police say scooters are not allowed to go faster than 15 miles per hour and are not allowed on roads with speed limits about 25 miles per hour. According to St. George Police, children under nine should never be operating electric scooters, and teens between nine and 15 years old should be closely monitored. Bus driver & his sick wife ‘who barely left home' died with 2 dachshunds when car plunged 300ft off cliff at UK landmark

A BUS driver and his "frail" wife who tragically died when their car plunged 300ft off a cliff have been identified by locals. John and Lynn King were reportedly with their two Daschshunds when their car plummeted into Alum Bay, near to the Needles, on the Isle of Wight last Friday. 6 6 6 The couple's silver Ford Mondeo left the road close to the world-famous coastal landmark, killing the pair instantly. It is understood that John, who drove for local company Southern Vectis, was a full-time carer for his wife. According to locals, Lynn had rarely been seen out the house for the past two years. Speaking to the MailOnline, one neighbour said: "She wasn't well, I don't know exactly what she was suffering from but I think it was serious. "John was effectively her carer. He was helping his wife to the car and their two Dachshund dogs were with them. 'His wife looked really, really frail. I was surprised to see her out of the house. She was hunched over quite badly and was finding it very difficult to walk." Emergency services were scrambled to Alum Bay New Road, close to the coastal spot, shortly after 7.20pm on Friday. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed on Sunday that two people died in the tragedy. The force explained: "A car, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below." Cops also closed the neighbouring Needles Landmark Attraction while emergency crews attended the site. Responders were stood down in the early hours of Saturday morning. In a statement released on Saturday evening, a police spokesperson said: "Formal identification has yet to take place, but their next of kin have been notified. "As part of the ongoing investigation into the incident, on behalf of the coroner, officers have been carrying out enquiries at an address on Arctic Road, Cowes." 6 6

EXCLUSIVE Revealed: Couple who died with their two dachshunds when their car plummeted 300ft off a cliff were a bus driver and his wife who was so ill and frail she had hardly left home

A couple who died when their car plummeted 300ft off a cliff near a well-known coastal spot were a bus driver and his wife who was so ill and frail she had hardly left home for two-years, neighbours have told MailOnline. The tragic couple - named locally today as John and Lynn King - died instantly when their silver Ford Mondeo, which also contained their two Dachshund dogs, drove off a cliff close to the Needles on the Isle of Wight on Friday evening. John worked as a driver for local bus company, Southern Vectis, and knew the routes around the island well, neighbours said. One local told MailOnline how she had seen the couple - thought to be aged in their early 70s - just hours before they died. John was helping Lynn into their car because she was struggling to walk unaided. The couple had their two Dachshund dogs with them. The neighbour said: 'It's really sad, I spoke to John a few times. He would always park his car right outside my house. I think I saw his wife maybe twice in the three years they'd been living in the road. 'She wasn't well. I don't know exactly what she was suffering from but I think it was serious. 'John was effectively her carer. I never saw nurses or medically trained staff ever go in. I think he did everything for her. 'On Friday afternoon, some time between 4pm and 4.45pm I saw John walk past my window. 'He was helping his wife to the car. Their two Dachshund dogs were with them. 'His wife looked really, really frail. She was hunched over quite badly and was finding it very difficult to walk. I was surprised to see her out of the house. 'That was the last time I saw them. They never came home. 'The police turned up at their home around midnight on Friday night into Saturday morning. 'I think what happened may have been planned. John drove for a living and knew these roads on the island like the back of his hand. 'He'd mown his lawn for the first time in three years last Wednesday. Two days before he died. He'd never done that before ever. 'But for some reason he only cut a small patch of the garden, close to the back of the house. I thought that was unusual. 'To me, he seemed like he was getting things in order. Then on Friday he took his wife and dogs out in the car - which he never did before - and that was the last we saw of them. 'I don't know if they had children or grandchildren. I'd say there were in their early 70s. But John was a nice guy and doted on his wife.' The couple's rented terraced home in Cowes is still being searched by Hampshire and Isle of Wight police officers. Coastguard, police, firefighters and ambulance crews all rushed to the scene on Friday evening and photos showed them working to get to the car. Witnesses said they watched on as a man was pulled from the wreckage and onto the shore. Response teams were then reportedly seen commencing CPR on one of the casualties. Photos of the aftermath show the wreckage of the car submerged in the water. With the roof and bonnet crumpled, while coastguard searched around it. In a statement released on Friday evening, the police said: 'We're currently at the scene of a serious incident in Totland. 'We were called at 7.21pm this evening after a car, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below.' Emergency services rushed to the scene and a winchman was lowered from the coastguard helicopter down to the bottom of the cliff. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance landed at Yarmouth where two ambulances, a critical care paramedic and Police had relocated awaiting the arrival of a casualty. Two coastguard teams responded and were stood down in the early hours of Saturday morning. The cliff sits near the world-famous Isle of Wight Needles, which is a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about 30 metres above the water. Near the landmark is a small theme park with a viewing point and chairlift down to the beach, with views of The Needles. The attraction brings in thousands of visitors every year and is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. The Needles Landmark Attraction was closed by police yesterday while emergency teams attended the incident. Access to the beach, an observation tower and the Needles Old Battery fort were also restricted.
