BAU launches Neera powder in sachet

1 2 Bhagalpur: Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) has introduced Neera in dried form, packaged in hygienic sachets, giving it a long shelf life and making it a market-ready product. The powdered Neera in sachets was unveiled by governor-cum-chancellor of universities, Arif Mohammed Khan, after the eighth convocation of the BAU on Saturday. On this occasion, the governor said the new product would make available Neera all through the year thus creating a sustainable business model for thousands of marginalised families in the state. BAU's Neera project, inspired by Mukhyamantri Neera Samvardhan Yojana (MMNSY) of the state govt and launched by CM Nitish Kumar, is aimed at providing employment and financial support to palm tree owners and toddy tappers, especially the Pasi community. Earlier, the BAU scientists had developed an innovative technology for processing and preservation of Neera in aluminium cans, said BAU, vice-chancellor, D R Singh. The VC said the new preservation and packaging technology of producing powdered Neera, developed indigenously at BAU, makes it suitable for long-distance marketing. It will also provide year-round livelihood support to those providing the raw material for preparation of Neera. Sachet of powdered Neera offers benefits like preservation, cost-effectiveness and extended shelf life besides making it easy to market, said the VC, adding that the Neera powder would soon be launched commercially.

Commercialisation of toddy led to adulteration; it is an attack on tappers' profession

Hyderabad: Statingthat the commercialization of the product (toddy) has led to adulteration, former Telangana Toddy Tappers Cooperative Finance Chairman Palle Ravi Kumar Goud said that there was a conspiracy to attack the professional business. Ravi Kumar Goud said that the toddy tapping profession is a sacred one and even in these modern days, the tappers climb the tree only after performing pooja. 'Persons even at the age of 75 climb the trees to extract the toddy. The pure toddy and Neera have medicinal value. There is no problem with the toddy in the villages and adulteration is seen more in Hyderabad. There are no trees in Hyderabad and hence there is scope for adulteration. In these circumstances, it is essential that the government take steps to curb the adulteration by taking up drives,' said Ravi Kumar. With the connivance of some of the police and excise personnel, there is a problem of adulteration, he added. Ravi Kumar said that in the present era where all commodities are adulterated, toddy also is considered as a commercial commodity. The government should streamline the supply and should ensure this is not taken as a revenue generating product. The toddy shops were closed during YS Rajashekhara Reddy's tenure with one GO, which affected the livelihood of the toddy tappers. However, the KCR government streamlined the process by taking up regular checkups so that incidents like adulteration did not appear. He said that the BRS government brought Neera café, which had medicinal value but the present government handed it to private persons and diluted the process. 'They are creating the wrong impression only to defame the profession. Instead, the government needs to take strong steps to curb the adulteration,' said Ravi Kumar.

BAU launches Neera with long shelf life, developed by its scientist

1 2 3 4 5 6 Bhagalpur: The Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, scientists have achieved a milestone by developing 'Asian Palmyra Palm' product 'Neera' that has extended shelf life. BAU vice chancellor, D R Singh, on Wednesday inaugurated a Neera processing plant at the university's horticulture garden that manufactures the packed product available for commercial sale to consumers. The new value-added Neera has high nutritional value, a nearly neutral pH, and acts as a thirst quencher with natural vitamins, sugar, and other health-beneficial nutrients, serving as a healthy alternative to chemical-based soft drinks. The VC said with the state of the art processing plant, the first of its kind in the entire region, would manufacture the Neera drink that would be marketed and sold in cans with a shelf life of six months Lauding the efforts of BAU scientists—Ahmar Aftab, Wasim Siddiqui, Shamsher Ahmad and Vivek Kumar—who played crucial roles in developing the Neera preservation technology, the VC said liquid collected from palm tree ferments rapidly after sunrise due to rising temperatures and converts into toddy, an alcoholic beverage that has 4% alcohol content. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Following the ban on alcoholic beverages in Bihar, the fermented toddy is also prohibited, impacting the livelihood of the tappers. The VC added that they envisaged a plan and worked tirelessly to address the livelihood issues facing the toddy tappers and to improve their lives. The BAU scientists designed and patented a Neera collection box and polybag to collect good quality and hygienic liquid for processing and packaging in drinking cans. This innovative step replaced traditional earthen pots (labni in common parlance), which led to immediate fermentation. The BAU's processing lines are open for stakeholders in the community, allowing them to utilise these facilities for processing various food products at nominal charges. The VC added that the university and the scientists are committed to improving the livelihood of toddy tappers and sellers through its support under the Mukhyamantri Neera Samvardhan Yojana (MMNSY) of the state govt. An official said the production capacity of the unit is 60,000 litres per annum. Neera will be packed in 200 ml aluminium cans. The sale of Neera will generating a revenue of Rs 1.35 lakh per annum. The profit will be shared by BAU and the stakeholders in the ratio of 25:75 per cent, respectively. Senior scientist and associate professor Mohammed Wasim Siddiqui has also developed a technology to prepare Neera powder, which can be mixed with water to resemble fresh drink. The VC added that this further enables Neera enjoyable throughout the year. The MMNSY is jointly implemented by the prohibition, excise and registration department and Jeevika.

Swig super drink ‘Neera' with gusto to beat the summer heat

Hyderabad: As Telangana swelters under the scorching summer sun with daily temperatures often crossing 40°C, the state's residents are rediscovering a sweet and cooling companion from their cultural heritage – Neera. At a time when fizzy sodas and artificially flavored drinks dominate store shelves, this natural, non-alcoholic sap from palmyra palm trees is steadily carving out a space as a healthier, tastier, and more sustainable alternative. Neera is not a new entrant into the lives of Telangana's people. Collected at dawn by the skilled toddy tappers of the Gouda community, Neera has been a traditional morning refreshment in villages for generations. Neera is rich in natural sugars like glucose and fructose, making it an instant energy drink. It also contains vital nutrients such as vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and iron. Its low glycemic index has attracted the attention of health-conscious consumers and diabetics alike, while its natural composition aids in digestion and prevents dehydration – an essential quality during Telangana's punishing summers. The Telangana State government has taken significant steps to elevate Neera into a mainstream health drink under the guidance of the Neera Board and local self-help groups. The pilot initiative began in the Rangareddy district's Mudwin and Cherikonda villages, where around 500 toddy tappers were trained in hygienic Neera extraction practices. These trained tappers are now equipped with modern gear and special insulated containers that maintain sub-zero temperatures, preserving the sap in its fresh form during transportation to urban centres. According to official data, the State currently procures nearly 1,000 litres of Neera from registered tappers daily. Each litre earns a tapper Rs 50, helping many earn between Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000 monthly, a significant jump from their previous seasonal earnings. The State plans to scale up this procurement to 5,000 litres per day over the next year, with an eye on both domestic consumption and exports. To bring Neera into the urban mainstream, the Telangana government has launched certified Neera stalls in Hyderabad, Warangal, and Karimnagar, offering city dwellers a safe, hygienic, and refreshing drink option. The inauguration of Hyderabad's first official Neera café in 2023 was a turning point in this movement.
