Stray dog menace grips city residents
Kochi: Residents of Palliparambu Lane near Ponoth Road area are in the grip of stray dog menace. According to locals, their calls for authorities to sort it out fall on deaf ears.
Though stray dog menace was there for quite some time, the issue got worse of late.
"We are unable to walk through road or ride motorcycles fearing stray dogs. Dogs would even enter household premises.
We are facing difficulties in going out for various purposes, including work," said Neethu Kiranjith, a resident of the area. "Today, I went to market and a pack of dogs surrounded my motorcycle. I somehow managed to wade through. I have two little kids and when they come out of the house to play in the courtyard, dogs rush to them.
The situation has become unbearable. When I take up the issue with authorities, including corporation officials and councillors, they say they are helpless," she added.
In protest against the increasing attacks by stray dogs, UDF councillors staged a protest in front of corporation office on Thursday. According to them, corporation authorities failed to implement animal birth control (ABC) project in an effective manner. Vaccination against rabies and sterilization measures for dogs are currently stalled, they said. Authorities cited shortage of dog catchers for the slow pace of ABC project.
