Casualty star reveals 'beautiful moment' in his life during 'tough time'
In 2024, Olly Rix's life changed when he brought a little dog called Nellie home. The actor has been playing Flynn Byron in BBC One's Casualty since March of this year. It's a busy life Olly leads working in the continuing drama and looking after young Nellie but recently, a rare day off from filming saw him take a trip to The Dogs Trust in Cardiff. Olly adores dogs, and could wait to learn more about the work the charity does. The Dogs Trust is an animal welfare charity and humane society that specialises in the well-being of dogs. It's the largest dog welfare charity in the UK and cares for over 15,000 animals each year. The charity's primary objective is to protect all dogs in the UK and elsewhere from cruelty and suffering. It focuses on the rehoming and rehabilitation of dogs who have been abandoned or given up by their owners. I'm a dog lover but I've never visited a rehoming centre before. As a result, it left me wondering if Olly's first emotion when he entered The Dogs Trust in Cardiff – a place home to unwanted dogs – was sadness. In our latest chat he reassured me that wasn't the case, as a dedicated team of people work hard to create an environment full of hope, love and celebratory moments. 'It was amazing. They talked me through the whole thing. How they work as an organisation and across the country, to how they work in that specific locality and in Cardiff', he said. 'I met various different dogs who all have different back stories, some absolutely heartbreaking, some actually oddly sort of uplifting. I met puppies who have just been born. They didn't have any kind of story but they were absolutely beautiful. 'They do so much work and it's so variable. It isn't really a sort of gut wrenchingly heartbreaking day. There's such a beautiful energy there. The people involved are just so humbling to be around. They are so selfless, and so focused on all the dogs there. It's such a tonic to the b******t of everyday life, to just go and be around some thoughtful, wonderful souls.' He smiled: 'They even named a dog after me! He was about a year old, a chocolate Labrador and they called him Olly, which was just so lovely. I got to meet him and play with him, it was a really special time. 'They just don't give up. I think what becomes so apparent so quickly is that there's a sort of uplifting nature to the entire organisation. It hits you in the face within seconds of walking in the door, because everything there, every sort of little soul there, is going to be okay. 'It's going to be a different process and a different journey for each one of them, and some of them will have a really tough time and they might have come from, you know, really horrendous circumstances, and they might need a lot of sort of medical care and intervention that will make the adoption process quite complicated. But even then, in the most extreme cases, they don't stop, they just see it through.' After spending the day at the centre, Olly headed home to look after his own furry best friend Nellie. The pooch is still young, which means Olly has recently had to battle through what everyone faces becoming owner to a new dog: sleepless nights, toilet training, and chaotic mishaps. It's certainly not easy but Olly wouldn't change it for the world. He told me that Nellie arrived in his life at a pivotal time for him, as he was 'having a bit of a tough time' and needed something to focus on. 'I think dogs can irrevocably change anybody's life', he noted. 'Little Nellie came along at a time when I was having a bit of a tough time, sort of personally and professionally, and it was just a bit of a tricky patch. It happens in life sometimes, and she came along in a moment when I needed to take my own attention away from myself, and not sort of become overly introspective or overly self centred, I suppose. It was really valuable and helped. 'So many people find that if they suffer from depression, for example, a dog is a perfect way of taking their attention into a different realm that is maybe more manageable for them. It allows them to see a bit of light in their life, and allows them to care for something external to themselves. That wasn't my situation, but it was something that I discussed with them at The Dogs Trust. A lot of people explained that they've seen that a lot.' 'My situation was different from that, but it was a similar sort of paradigm. It was all about this beautiful, innocent little life that needed me functioning to care for it. It became a really beautiful moment in my life. Despite the things going on around me, it was actually just a really pleasant, uplifting time. I'm always going to do everything I can to champion all dogs.' We're about halfway through Casualty's latest boxset Supply and Demand. As the latter half of the miniseries begins, focus will shift more onto Flynn. There's a lot of order and control when it comes to Flynn's work at Holby ED but in his personal life, things couldn't be more different. 'I think he's sort of settled within the job, but I think he's deeply, personally unsettled, which is a thread that this series begins to pull', Olly told me. 'His family is fractured and he's left to face that in a way that he perhaps hasn't had to before. The quiet nights at home and stuff like that. It's not long before he starts thinking actually, quiet nights at home are probably the last thing he wants, and that's when chaos ensues.' More Trending 'I think the interesting aspect of this series, as far as Flynn is concerned, is that we do a bit of a deep dive into why he is the way he is. We start to explain some of that behaviour in a way we hadn't before. He is quite abrupt and abrasive in some contexts, but we've never really explained why, aside from saying that he's come from a military background rather than a civilian background. 'But it's nice to flesh that out now and explore his emotional world as well.' Former Towie star Billie shared the epic party labelled 'Nelly-Chella' on social media, which included a candy floss machine, pizza van, DJ, saxophonist and balloon-filled pool party at their Essex mansion. 9 Billie threw a huge party for her daughter Nellie - and followers think it's gone too far Credit: Instagram / billieshepherdofficial 9 A giant pastel cake was presented to Nellie at her decadent birthday party Credit: Instagram / billieshepherdofficial Reality star Billie wrote: "The best day celebrating Nelly's 11th Birthday. Sooooo much fun from start to end. I absolutely love party planning and this theme has to be one of my favourite yet!! "As always thank you to the amazing suppliers that I work with. You all went above and beyond to make things extra special and absolutely nailed the brief to every last detail." Followers commented: "Think I got a tenner in a card for my 11th birthday." "Lovely - but too much!" remarked a second. "No pressure on the other parents then…" observed a third. "Never thought I'd be jealous of an 11-year-old's party," admitted a fourth. "Cannot imagine what the milestone birthdays will look like. Yes they can afford it and good for them, just don't put it on social media," suggested one user. "Nelly-Chella at 11? Nah, p**s off. Too much money." "Spoilt brat," barked another. Billie Faiers slammed for being 'out of touch' as she shows off expensive hot tub "Wow. If this is what happens at an 11th party what on earth will she get for an 18th/21st?" inquired a follower. Another user penned: "I think perhaps the issue some people are having are that it can be misconstrued as showing off. "There's so many people that can't afford to do much with the current climate as it is, so yes, naturally, people will feel like cr*p and maybe even bitter about it. "And that's absolutely okay! It's valid, times are difficult!! Is it extra for an 11-year-old? Yes. If I had their money, would I do the same? Yes! I think I'd go about advertising it differently though." The reality star was slammed by fans last month as she plugged a hot tub freebie on Instagram whilst also having a swimming pool in the background. The video sparked outrage from some followers who claimed the star promoted a product that does not have an 'affordable' price tag at £1,500. Billie shares Nellie, son Arthur and youngest daughter Margot with her husband Greg Shepard. Billie and broker-businessman Greg have been married since 2019 and live in a £1.4 million Essex mansion. It comes after the pair enjoyed a wild celebration for his 40th birthday, boozing on a yacht in Dubai, in March. 9 Young DJs were called in to bring some life into the party proceedings Credit: Instagram / billieshepherdofficial 9 A posh pizza van was hired to cater for the multiple guests at the birthday bash Credit: Instagram / billieshepherdofficial 9 Their £1.4 million home was decorated lavishly for the 11-year-old's party Credit: Instagram / billieshepherdofficial 9 An array of sweet treats were available for party guests Credit: Instagram / billieshepherdofficial 9 The pool party in their Essex mansion has been called 'inappropriate' and 'too much' Credit: Instagram / billieshepherdofficial 9 Billie was joined at the party by sister Sam and their family and friends Credit: Instagram / billieshepherdofficial

Special programme created to honour Threave Rovers stalwarts' decades of service
Wilma and Nelson – known as Nellie – Cochrane have given the Castle Douglas club more than 100 years of service between them. A special programme has been created to honour two Threave Rovers stalwarts. Wilma and Nelson – known as Nellie – Cochrane have given the Castle Douglas club more than 100 years of service between them. And to celebrate their incredible contribution, committee member Bobby McCleary, who has known the couple for nearly half a century, has created the souvenir programme. In the introduction to Just Another Day at the Rovers, Bobby writes: 'Football clubs need people like Wilma and Nellie, who are prepared to put in lots of time and effort, and it is no surprise that whenever fans from all over Dumfries and Galloway talk about Threave Rovers Wilma or Nellie's names will be talked about. 'I hope these bring back happy memories to you as much as it has been for me putting it all together.' The programme features tributes from clubs across Dumfries and Galloway, with former Threave player and manager Paul McGinley even writing a special poem. It also looks at a number of other topics, including their wedding, Nellie and son Gary's career and some of the managers and players the club has had over the years. Bobby, who used to live in Castle Douglas but now stays in Larkhall in Lanarkshire, said: 'I've been on the Threave committee for 15 years myself and I wanted to recognise the work they've done at the club. 'Between them they've got about 100 years of service to the club. 'I said to them back in December I was going to do a souvenir programme on their time at Threave Rovers. 'Everything has been done by text – I sent them loads of questions and they replied on bits of paper here and there. 'It's taken about six months to complete. My health hadn't been too good and it gave me something to occupy myself. 'Most of the input has been from their memories – but I've stories about them they don't know I've got! 'They've supplied me with loads of photographs and I've turned loads of photographs into stories.' The programme, which costs £4.50 plus £2 postage, is only available through Bobby. He can be contacted through Facebook, by emailing fergusmcc@ or calling 0774248963.

Footy star reveals his young son confronted rival who body-slammed him at halftime in one of the craziest acts the NRL has seen
Footy superstar Cody Walker has revealed his young son once confronted Lachlan Lewis over one of the NRL 's most bizarre and controversial moments. Back in 2021, Lewis escaped with just a fine after he opted to strangely body slam Canterbury playmaker Walker at half-time during his side's 32-24 defeat by the Bunnies in Round 18. The half-time buzzer had already gone and players were beginning to leave the pitch, when Lewis approached his opponent from behind, grabbed him and spun him into the ground. A brawl ensued, with Walker's team-mates flying in to back up their halfback. Several Canterbury players stood around looking perplexed at Lewis' antics, while Doggies coach Trent Barrett shook his head in disbelief as he watched on from the coaching box. But in another very funny and bizarre twist to the tale, Walker, 35, revealed on The Unfiltered Show that his young son had confronted Lewis in the team hotel after the match. 'The funny thing, after that, was we were all staying at the same hotel. Bulldogs, Souths, Parra, Warriors and Canberra,' Walker told the podcast. 'And my son, right... he's got no filter. He talks to anyone and he is a maniac. He actually questioned him [Lewis]. 'He goes: "Why'd you tackle my dad for?"' Walker, who was in hysterics, couldn't remember the full exchange but revealed that Lewis had approached him about it afterwards. 'He goes: "Your son actually came up and questioned me..."' Walker said, giggling with laughter. Walker and his partner Nellie have two sons together, Kian and Kade. 'It just sort of simmered the whole thing down, we just had a bit of a laugh about it,' he added. 'It was quite a funny experience when you think about it,' he added on the body slam. 'It sort of gave us an edge a bit because he got sin-binned after that and then we ran 'em over then.' 'It was strange.' At the time, Walker was reluctant to reveal what had been said between the pair, but when pressed again on their exchange on the podcast, he revealed their conversation was actually quite mundane. 'I'm not sure if you remember correctly but I made a bit of a break down the sideline to finish the half,' Walker said, recounting the moment. 'I sort of stepped back in and Will Hopoate tackled me and I think Lachlan Lewis was on top. 'Something happened, I can't remember. 'He grabbed me or touched me or something and I was just said: "Don't f***ing touch me!" 'It was when we were all getting off each other and I can't remember what happened. Then he just said: "What did you say?" Walker then repeated himself, before adding: 'Then he just grabs me! 'That was it. If you hear that story, it wasn't anything in particular. 'I held onto the ball,' he added laughing. 'I tried to grab him and I'm holding onto the ball, I don't know why I'm holding onto the ball.' At the age of 35, Walker is now one of the oldest players in the NRL, behind Daly Cherry-Evans and Mark Nicholls, and is showing no signs of slowing down. The Rabbitohs club legend began his professional NRL career with the Bunnies back in 2016 and has since gone on to return 100 tries over 220 games. Lewis, the nephew of NRL legend Wally Lewis, went on to play 43 times for the Bulldogs between 2018 and 2021 before being delisted by the club. His contract was torn up by the club after he had attempted to sell a sound speaker on eBay that was gifted to clubs by the NRL during COVID. No NRL clubs subsequently enquired on his availability, meaning Lewis is not made an appearance in the NRL since. Despite that, Lewis went viral back in 2022 after sharing a heartwarming clip of himself and his daughter Halli on his TikTok account.

Puppy's Suspicious Reaction to Sparkling Water Declared Relatable: 'Valid'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Internet viewers have deemed a dog's reaction to trying sparkling water "valid" as the confused pup appeared shocked and confused. Nellie, a miniature bull terrier, lives in the U.K. with her owners, who have a TikTok account dedicated to her: @nellie_the_mini_bully. This details the adventures of the 12-week-old pup, from getting the zoomies to taking naps in the most-comfortable spots in the house. Now one recent video has catapulted Nellie to viral fame, as her owners documented her trying sparkling water, rather than still. In a clip viewed close to 5 million times since being posted on June 24, her owner places Nellie's water bowl on the ground, with the puppy wagging her tail in anticipation. But once she leans over and takes a short drink, she immediately realizes something's not right. Nellie first walks away from the bowl, before designating it her enemy—and she jumps, barks and growls at the suspicious water as her owners burst out laughing. Just to be certain, though, Nellie takes another short drink—and, with her suspicions confirmed, she continues jumping and barking at the bowl. The video caption reads: "Why it spicy." And TikTok users loved it, awarding the clip more than 1 million likes, as one user called Nellie's reaction "reasonable" and another called it a "valid response." "Seriously sparkling water tastes like static tv," one viewer posted, as another added that "sparkling water tastes like an email." And as a third person summed it up: "Bro drank the water of uncontrollable rage." Nellie the miniature bull terrier puppy reacts with suspicion to a bowl of sparkling water. Nellie the miniature bull terrier puppy reacts with suspicion to a bowl of sparkling water. TikTok @nellie_the_mini_bully Some commenters worried Nell could get sick from drinking sparkling water. Veterinarian Dr. Gary Richter, author of The Ultimate Pet Health Guide, told Rover that, while carbonated water is "OK in a pinch," he would not recommend large amounts of it as there is a "rare" chance it could lead to gas buildup. Having still water available for puppies is vital, as it facilitates the metabolic process and regulates a puppy's temperature, according to the American Kennel Club. When house-training a puppy, owners may choose to remove water overnight to prevent accidents, but it should be readily available throughout the day.
