Kalki Koechlin recalls casting couch experiences, says producer wanted to know me
Actor Kalki Koechlin has spoken about her personal encounters with the casting couch, highlighting both subtle and overt instances of sexual harassment she has faced within and outside the film industry. In a recent interview, Kalki shed light on how such experiences are often brushed aside or normalised, even though their psychological impact can be her first disturbing experience, she recalled an incident from her student days in London when she was working as a promo girl for Nokia phones at the Cannes Film Festival. Kalki said to Zoom, "One was in Cannes. I wasn't even an actor yet, just a student working as a promo girl selling Nokia phones. An Indian producer, who knew someone connected to my mother, invited me to his film screening. Later, he asked me out to dinner. When I inquired about work opportunities, he made it very clear that I had to 'be with him' for that to happen."advertisementKalki also recalled another unsettling experience after entering the industry. During an audition for a big-budget film in Mumbai, she encountered inappropriate expectations. "Other time it happened when I went for an audition here for a film, and the producer said, 'You want to do this film? That's great, but I need to get to know you because it's a big launch. So it was basically the same, like, 'Come out, let's go out for dinner.' So then again I was like sorry, I don't want to waste your time or mine," she said. On the work front, Kalki was last seen in the Tamil romantic action film 'Nesippaya', directed by Vishnuvardhan. In a recent conversation with Aleena Dissects, Kalki Koechlin opened up about how actors go to extremes for image-building and recalled being stopped from entering an award show because of her car. She said, 'For years, I arrived at the Filmfare Awards in my Swift, and my dress would be bigger than the car. People would stop the vehicle and wouldn't let it enter the venue, and then I had to show my invite and say, 'It's me.' That's just who I am — I value freedom and everything else that comes with it. I don't want that kind of lifestyle because I want to be spontaneous. When you don't have an entourage, there's less chance of being spotted, and fewer people following you. The only place it's a problem is at airports — I've dedicated that 1.5 hours at the airport to my fans, because it's back-to-back selfies.' Kalki acknowledged that public relations and image-building are necessary to a certain extent. She added that it's important for some major stars to have bodyguards and PR personnel for safety. Talking about the lengths actors go to for maintaining an image, she said, 'I know people who live in a tiny 1BHK but drive an Audi. They'll show up to meetings in an Audi with a driver, but they live in a small hole. For me, freedom is really important. I do spend money — but on living in a beautiful house in Goa and flying back and forth to Mumbai. That's where all my money goes.'
