Jaguars fight back to beat Flames and boost Telkom Netball League semi-final hopes

Picture: NSA Image: Netball South Africa LAST year's losing finalists, the Gauteng Jaguars, secured a crucial 63-51 victory over the North West Flames in Power Week 3 of the Telkom Netball League at the Durban ICC on Tuesday afternoon, as the battle for the semi-final places heated up. The record six-times winners, who are coached by Rozanne Mathysse, came into the final week of SA's premier netball competition in fourth place, with the Flames one position above them. The win cemented their push for a play-off place but dented the chances of Elsunet du Plessis' charges, who face a battle for the final play-off spot with the Southern Stings. The Flames had the hotter start in a cagey first quarter where star Jaguars goal attack Kamogelo Maseko struggled to get going. Her usually telepathic link with goal shooter Ine-Mari Venter just wasn't there as the Flames closed out the quarter with a 14-12 lead. The Jaguars were a different team at the beginning of the second stanza as they finally found their rhythm. They scored seven unanswered points as they sped up play noticeably, while goalkeeper Bodenstein was increasingly influential on the defensive end. Jaguars wing defence Caroline Paul is ready to launch another attack against the Flames in Monday's match at the Durban ICC that the Jaguars won 63-51. Image: Netball South Africa Ominously for the Flames, Maseko found her range, and the partnership with Venter burst to life. They also shared the goalscoring burden. Bodenstein was enjoying the better of her battle against Flames goal shooter Zandre Smit, who had a dominant first half in the attacking circle. The Flames, however, refused to go away and trailed the Jaguars 30-27 at halftime. There was another scoring burst by the Jaguars that resulted in a six-point lead (39-33). Defensively, it was the Jamie van Wyk show. The Jaguars skipper seemed to have telescopic arms and springs in her heels, popping up everywhere at wing defence to intercept the Flames' passes and disrupt their general play. She was named Player of the Match. Even after Jaguars player Caroline Paul was sin-binned in the final quarter, they refused to let go of their grip on the match. Their accuracy in front of goal also proved a major difference. Coach Mathysse praised her players' character in recovering from a sluggish start to take the win, but pointed out areas for improvement. 🔥 On fire until the final whistle! Jaguars claw their way to a 12-goal win after a powerful second-half display. 😬 Q1 🔥14-12🐾 Q2 🔥27-30🐾 Q3 🔥39-48🐾 Q4 🔥51-63🐾#TNLFlamesJaguars #TelkomNL #TNL2025 #TelkomStandTall @TelkomZA — Netball South Africa (@Netball_SA) July 15, 2025 'I think that first quarter we have to start a lot better and we have to play for 15 minutes. I felt we were brilliant in two five-minute spells but we let it go, to then pick up again. So that's something I would want to work on,' she said in her post-match interview. Next up for the Jaguars is a repeat of last year's final against defending champions the Crinums, who are currently in second place. The unbeaten Fireballs top the log. Flames coach Du Plessis urged her players to refocus after the blow to their semi-final chances. 'I think we really played a good first half, and everything kind of worked for us although I felt like in the midcourt we were a little flat but defensively we really did well,' she said. 'But you need to play consistently for 60 minutes to win games, and to also make sure you score. In these types of game you can't miss goals.' She admitted that they were in for a tough battle against the Stings, who drew level with the Flames on 11 points after a 76-44 win over the Baobabs.

World Netball says suspended Molokwane ‘has case to answer': Sascoc boss

World Netball has found suspended Netball South Africa (NSA) president Cecilia Molokwane has a case to answer and will face a disciplinary hearing in the coming weeks, SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) president Barry Hendricks said on Thursday. But he added he did not know the charges against the controversial sports boss. 'World Netball came back to us recently to say that there was a case to answer and they're now busy with the disciplinary hearing,' Hendricks told journalists in Johannesburg. The world governing body had indicated to him that the process should be completed around mid-July. Asked if he knew the charges against Molokwane, he replied: 'No, they've kept that between themselves and Ms Molokwane.' Molokwane, who was suspended last month after allegedly refusing to step down provisionally while facing investigation, has maintained her innocence, alleging claims had been made by 'anonymous individuals' wanting to ruin her reputation.

Photo: Netball South Africa Image: Netball South Africa Defending champions the Free State Crinums bounced back quickly from their only loss so far of Power Week 1 of the Telkom Netball League (TNL), with a 68-45 win over the North West Flames on day six. The Golden Fireballs had handed the log leaders a shock 50-45 loss in their top-of-the-table clash. The Crinums were back to their imperious best with a commanding performance against the Flames at the Sun City Superbowl in Rustenburg, North West. The team's dominance was evident throughout the game, with the Flames struggling to keep up. The Crinums' attack was relentless, with 80 attempts compared to the Flames' 53. The Crinums' defence was solid, forcing three held balls and eight interceptions. This strong defensive display was a key factor in their victory. Coach Martha Mosoahle-Samm said: 'I'm very proud of the girls, it was a big win for us, we needed it.' She also highlighted the importance of giving fringe players opportunities, allowing them to feel the pressure of playing against a big team. The Flames seemed to lose momentum after the first quarter, allowing the Crinums to take control of the game. Coach Elsunet du Plessis acknowledged that her team were inconsistent, but saw positive aspects of their performance. She said: 'I think we were too inconsistent... but still there were passages of play that were very good and we can build on that.' She emphasised the need for her team to refocus and come back stronger. The Gauteng Jaguars, who have won the tournament six times, are slowly finding form after a poor start. They outclassed the Baobabs 65-38, after seeing off the Zambezi Eagles 56-49. The team's early dominance of the Baobabs set the tone for the rest of the game. Video Player is loading. Stand-out performers included Ine-Mare Venter with 49 goal attempts, and solid defensive plays from Jamie Williamson, Zane Bodenstein, and Lungile Mthembu. However, the team faced some setbacks, with Janie van Wyk being temporarily replaced by Jamie Williamson due to concussion protocols. Alice Kenon also sustained an injury. Coach Rozanne Matthyse of the Jaguars said: 'A lot of our players are coachable, and that's important. They know what they want from this competition, and they are always focused on our process.' The Jaguars' mini-revival will face another stern test with a clash against the Flames. Baobabs coach Emily Mathosa reflected on her team's struggles, saying: 'We did not start well, and I think that's why the score went up. 'If we had maintained our own centre passes, the score would never be like this... I am actually happy that we were able to improve in the second and third quarters.' The Baobabs were able to quickly put the disappointment behind them with a narrow 48-47 win over the Aloes on Friday morning. Nokwanda Khumalo scored the winning goal for the Baobabs at the final buzzer in a dramatic end-to-end clash. The first round of Telkom Netball League matches will end on Sunday. Power Week 2 takes place from June 13-17.

Photo: ARMAND HOUGH Independent Media Image: ARMAND HOUGH Independent Media World Netball has suspended Cecilia Molokwane, the president of Netball South Africa (NSA) and Africa Netball, and a World Netball director, casting doubts on her bid for a third term as NSA leader. The reasons remain unclear, with talks said to be ongoing. The sport's world governing body has yet to disclose the specific charges, sending the rumour mill into overdrive in the netball community around the possible reasons for her suspension. Molokwane has been a prominent figure in South African netball since she first took over the NSA presidency in 2017. Over her two terms, she has been credited with propelling the Proteas to impressive finishes in recent Netball World Cups, and for hosting Africa's successful maiden World Cup tournament in Cape Town in 2023. She has listed hosting the showpiece as a highlight of her netball journey, as well as expanding the profile and reach of netball in the country. Molokwane has also been credited with securing top opposition for the national netball team, in their bid to crack the podium places at major international tournaments. Recent news of a Test series against New Zealand later this year followed earlier clashes against Jamaica and England. All three teams are ranked higher than the Proteas. At the recent launch of the 2025 Telkom National Netball League in Johannesburg, Molokwane declared her intention to run for a third term as NSA president in the elections later this year.
