THE RUNNING MAN: Edgar Wright Breaks Down His Reboot's Leads and Talks About Earning Schwarzenegger's Blessing — GeekTyrant
Edgar Wright's The Running Man reboot is speeding toward theaters, and now that the first trailer has dropped, the filmmaker is talking about and teasing what fans can expect, from the revamped cast of heroes and villains to getting Arnold Schwarzenegger's personal stamp of approval. Based on Stephen King's dystopian novel (written under the Richard Bachman pseudonym), this new version of The Running Man isn't looking to copy the 1987 cult favorite. It's diving deeper into the source material while giving it a modern, unflinching energy. Glen Powell ( Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You ) takes the lead as Ben Richards, an out-of-work construction worker who enters the Network's deadly 30-day survival show in a desperate attempt to save his sick daughter. Jayme Lawson plays Sheila, Ben's wife, adding emotional stakes to the chaos. 'Richards is looking to go to the Network building to get onto a different show, to get some quick cash,' Wright explains. 'Then a series of incidents lead to him becoming a prime candidate for The Running Man.' On the antagonist side, Josh Brolin is Dan Killian, who's not just the show's producer, but the mastermind behind the entire bloodsport. ' Brolin calls his character, 'A guy who basically has created this show, and runs this show, and loves to create any scenario that he can that's going to bring more people emotionally wrapped up into the show, regardless of the consequences.' Lee Pace plays McCone, the lead Hunter tasked with tracking Richards. He calls the character 'a kind of murderous ghost that follows Richards through the story, trying to murder him, but also trying to put on a show for the American public.' And then there's Colman Domingo, channeling Jerry Springer energy as Bobby T, the wildly charismatic face of The Running Man TV broadcast. 'The most famous celebrity in the world,' Domingo says. 'Which is why we have to make sure he shines in every way, with his diamonds and his jewelry and his expensive Jacob & Co. watch.' Supporting cast includes Martin Herlihy and Katy O'Brian as fellow Runners, William H. Macy as a shady black-market dealer, Emilia Jones in a mysterious and pivotal role, and Michael Cera as Elton, a character from the book that Wright teases has 'a little surprising' arc compared to Cera's usual fare. 'It was such a thrill to be with him and also just to see him and Glen Powell together,' Wright adds. 'They're a very unlikely duo.' One of the biggest moments for Wright and Powell was Getting Arnold Schwarzenegger's blessing. The director reveals that he and Powell got on a Zoom call with the action legend, and it couldn't have gone better. 'It was amazing,' Wright says. 'We wanted to give a nod to the great man in the film — I'm not going to say what that was — and we sort of needed his approval for it.' He continues: 'Glen has been in film with Arnold; he was in Expendables 3 , and he knew [his son] Patrick. I said, 'We have to talk to Arnold.' It was an incredible call… He actually said to us, 'Out of all of my films that I've made, I've always felt that's one that would be a worthy remake, and I think you guys are all set up to do that.' He basically gave us his blessing, and it was an incredibly sweet thing to do.' This reboot looks to fix what many felt the original got wrong giving us a movie that's sharper, deadlier, and more relevant than ever. A brutal media satire wrapped in a high-stakes action thriller, The Running Man is gunning for both your adrenaline and your conscience. The hunt begins November 7.

Essaouira to host 2026 UNESCO Creative Cities Conference as first African city
The city of Essaouira will host the 18th session of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network Annual Conference in 2026, the United Nations organization announced on Monday. According to a statement from UNESCO, the decision was made following an online vote by member cities of the network, during which Essaouira received the highest number of votes among the candidate cities. It thus becomes «the first city in Africa and the Arab world to host the Network's Annual Conference». Since being designated a Creative City in the field of music in 2019, Essaouira has distinguished itself through «its commitment to cultural and creative sectors, with a particular focus on music», the UN agency noted. It highlighted landmark festivals such as Gnaoua, World Music, and Jazz Under the Argan Tree as evidence of «the cultural richness of Essaouira, a crossroads city where local traditions are woven into a deeply plural identity». The UNESCO Creative Cities Annual Conference serves as a key platform for the network's 350 member cities to «exchange ideas, share best practices, and strengthen international cooperation in culture and sustainable urban development». According to the same source, the 2026 edition in Essaouira will focus on a specific theme—yet to be announced—alongside discussions on sustaining local policies and actions that support cultural and creative industries. It will also provide a unique opportunity to showcase «the rich cultural heritage and vibrant creativity of this Moroccan city». UNESCO's collaboration with Essaouira in organizing the conference will contribute to the expansion of the Creative Cities Network and serve as a follow-up to the World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development (Mondiacult 2025). It will also support progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11, which aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

Australian Survivor host confirms brutal firing after 10 years
Fans and former contestants have shared their outcry after Australian Survivor presenter Jonathan LaPaglia confirmed he has been axed from the show Australian Survivor fans are devastated as decade-long host Jonathan LaPaglia announced he will no longer be at the helm. The iconic actor and Survivor presenter has led the Australian version of the hit reality competition series on Network 10 since 2016. On Monday (30th June), LaPaglia, affectionately known as 'JLP' by contestants and fans, took to Instagram to confirm the sad news. 'Australian Survivor has seen some of the most epic blindsides over the last 10 years, but this one might just be the craziest of them all….because it happened to me,' he shared. 'I received a call from the Network thanking me for all my hard work and dedication to the show but for next season they are 'going in a different direction'. 'Ratings had dipped a bit recently and they wanted to do something drastic to shake things up. So for the first time ever this is not a tribe swap, but a HOST SWAP®️ Yes, you read that right.' He went on to thank the cast and crew, as well as the show's loyal legion of fans, for all their support over the past 10 years, calling the hosting gig 'one of the greatest adventures of my career'. Thankfully, there's still one more season with JLP as host for fans to look forward to, Australian Survivor: Australia V The World, coming up later this year on Network 10. 'Probably our best season EVER!' he claimed, before adding an emotional sign-off: '(Ps. Whoever said a blindside is the most humane way to put someone down is an idiot. It hurts like a b***!)' His post received an outpouring of support from fans and several former Survivor contestants. Matt Tarrant, who competed in JLP's first-ever season, replied: 'Mate, this is genuinely devastating. 'One of my favourite memories of the game is you pulling out the beers from the crew fridges for us Season 1 Cast at the finale because no one else cared about us at that point, absolute gem of a bloke - good luck for whatever is next JLP.' And two-time competitor Flick Eddington wrote: 'HUGE MISTAKE!!! It honestly won't be the same without you!!! This news breaks my heart!' She then cheekily suggested: 'Maybe you can come back as a contestant and blindside everyone!' Viewers have also slammed the decision on Reddit, where one user decried: 'Ratings dipped a bit recently so they ditch the host? Aussie Survivor has its faults, but JLP wasn't one of them.' Someone else slammed the move: 'Needless to say completely shocking news. Awful choice by production.' 'This is so damn stupid,' a third fan wrote. 'Maybe if they wanted to save on costs they could make it shorter than 50 days lol. 'Worst decision they have ever made. Channel 10 has been going down for a while though.' Survivor fans - will you continue watching once JLP officially steps down? Australian Survivor is available on Network 10 and 10play and can be streamed on Prime Video in the UK.

Don't miss out on the headlines from TV. Followed categories will be added to My News. Channel 10's replacement for The Project will air for the first time on Monday evening as part of the Network's latest bid for a ratings win. The Project aired its last episode on Friday and is being replaced by 10News+ which will be the first commercial free-to air news program to also be available as a video podcast via global streaming service Spotify. Television journalist Denham Hitchcock will co-anchor the show with his former Seven Network colleague Amelia Brace, with the pair insisting in promos for the show that they will 'put the truth first'. 10News+ is replacing The Project on Channel 10. Picture: 10 10News+ is replacing The Project on Channel 10. Picture: 10 X Learn More SUBSCRIBER ONLY Hitchcock has also promised a banger of a first episode too. He told Stellar Magazine that he was excited to have been 'let out of the gate' on stories and revealed he had one up his sleeve for months. 'It's an absolute blockbuster,' he teased. 'It's a story 60 Minutes, Four Corners and Spotlight would kill for.' 'It's a story on a Melbourne mother of five called Debbie Voulgaris. She was in the news cycle not too long ago. She got caught going into Taiwan with seven kilos of heroin and cocaine in her suitcase. She said that she was not guilty. In February this year, the day before her trial, she pled guilty. She was sentenced to 16 years prison in Taiwan, and since then, she's disappeared from the news cycle. Channel 10 are hoping for a ratings win. Picture: 10 'The real truth behind that story is something quite different. At the heart of it is a scam, and she was asked to go by someone that she knows very well, to go and deliver a suitcase. She did not know the contents of that suitcase. Now this investigation that you will see, will have all of the messages, the scam, how it started, who the person is, who sent her there who asked her to go and what is currently happening with her in Taiwan. In fact, you'll hear from her from a Taiwanese prison cell.' Starting off his career straight out of high school in 1995, Hitchcock answered phones and filled the biscuit barrel for Today Tonight on Seven. 'To truly try and make a difference and enrich the lives of the people you come across is what I'm most proud of,' Hitchcock said of his 30 years on the road. 'I've managed to do that in a lot of cases, and that gives me the most amount of hope. There's still beauty among the rubble and devastation. You just have to look for it.' Meanwhile, it was an emotional final episode of The Project on Channel 10 after over 16 years on-screen with surprise appearances from Carrie Bickmore and Lisa Wilkinson. Regular hosts Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, Sam Taunton and Georgie Tunny bid farewell to viewers during an emotional final episode. Georgie Dunny was in tears on Friday as she bid farewell to viewers and her co-stars. Picture: 10 In the end, it all came down to heartbreaking final speeches from Georgie Tunny and Waleed Aly, both of whom fought back tears but in the end relented to their emotions as they clocked out of the studio one final time. 'I can't actually look at you all, I'm so sorry, because you've just been an absolute dream to work with,' said Tunny as she broke down. 'There can be a lot said about the media industry and it's cat fights and all of this, but this has been a family from the beginning and I know that you'll still in my life.' 'Thanks to the people who built this from nothing,' began Aly. 'The people who made this show 4,504 times, on camera and off. People long gone and here today. Every one of you is indispensable. Thank you to our guests over the years. To those who came to play, or persuade. To those who came on to be challenged, to meet us in the great public square of our lives, who disagreed with us in good faith over the years: thank you so much. You made us better. And thank you to you at home. Thanks for letting us into your hearts. Cliche thing to say is to let us in your living rooms but that is inadequate. Instead, thank you for letting us into your hearts.' Originally published as Network 10 to air The Project replacement, 10News+ on Monday night
