Nevada County deputies arrest woman suspected in axe attack following pursuit

Authorities in the Sierra Foothills arrested a woman over the weekend after she allegedly attacked another woman with an axe and led authorities on a pursuit. According to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, the victim was at her home in Nevada City Saturday afternoon when the suspect showed up. Initially thinking the suspect was a delivery driver, the victim waked outside to meet her. Deputies said the suspect pulled the axe from the trunk of her car and charged at the victim. "The homeowner ran for her life and was able to get back inside her residence and lock the door," the sheriff's office said in a statement. The suspect then struck the front door of the victim's home with the axe before leaving. Deputies said the suspect and victim had no known affiliation. The victim called 911. After providing a description of the suspect, a deputy near Highway 20 and Washington Road found the suspect vehicle with a woman matching the suspect description behind the wheel. During an attempted traffic stop, deputies said the suspect failed to yield, leading authorities on a pursuit for 13 miles. The California Highway Patrol along with police from Nevada City and Grass Valley assisted in the pursuit. Deputies said units had the suspect boxed in at a gas station in Grass Valley, but she was able to flee after backing her car into a CHP vehicle and attempted to run over a Nevada County sheriff's deputy. She had also struck another uninvolved motorist. The suspect was arrested off of Scopar Road, a dirt road in Grass Valley. Deputies said she assaulted a CHP officer which led authorities to place her in a body wrap. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Elisa Peraro of Grass Valley, was booked on suspicion of multiple offenses, including assault with a deadly weapon, evading police, obstructing a police officer, being under the influence of a controlled substance and vandalism. Jail records show Peraro remains in custody as of Monday.

Nevada County deputies help bear intruder escape home

Deputies helped a home intruder escape from a Nevada City residence, and it was all caught on video. The Nevada County Sheriff's Office says, early in the morning on June 13, they got a 911 call from a Nevada City resident reporting that a bear was in her home. Several deputies and Nevada County Consolidated Fire Department firefighters responded to the home. On June 13, a homeowner called 911 at 4:39 a.m. after discovering a bear inside her Nevada City residence. Three deputies of the Nevada County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) responded to assist with the bear, along with firefighters from Nevada County Consolidated FD (NCCFD) for any medical needs. While the team checked on the homeowner outside, Deputy Lewis of NCSO and Captain Menet of NCCFD searched the interior of the residence and located the bear in a stairwell. The team opened doors and windows to help the bear exit and thankfully the bear opted not to 'bear'-icade himself and left peacefully out a window. While some mornings start off un-'bear'-able, this one wasn't too bad for the books. Doors and windows were opened and the bear was then coaxed out of the home by first responders. No injuries were reported. The incident is a reminder for residents to be Bear Aware, keeping entrances to homes closed and food -- especially pet food -- inside.

Search underway for woman who fell into South Yuba River in Nevada County

A woman in Nevada County remains missing after falling into the South Yuba River on Saturday evening, the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District said. Around 8:30 p.m., Fire District crews were sent to the South Yuba River near the Highway 49 bridge for reports of a person falling into the water. Emergency crews immediately launched a search and rescue operation. The Fire District said they had crews doing bank-side observation and swift water teams and aerial surveillance teams involved in the effort. The woman was not found on Saturday, and search efforts were suspended for safety reasons. Search and rescue members from the Nevada County Sheriff's Department took over the search effort on Sunday. "The South Yuba River is known for its cold, swift waters and slippery rocks, which can create hazardous conditions even for experienced swimmers," the Fire District said. A search is still underway for the woman.
