Soft Bait Release New Album 'Life Advice' + Announce Album Release Tour
Today, Tāmaki Makaurau four-piece Soft Bait release their sophomore album, Life Advice, out now via Flying Nun Records. In support, the band have also announced a release tour of Aotearoa - with shows in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Tāmaki Makaurau, Ōtautahi and Ōtepoti. Soft Bait have been producing off-centre post-punk since their formation in 2020, only sharpening their output since the release of Plot Points - their debut LP released in 2022. Barrelling forward with restless momentum, new album Life Advice is sharp, hook-heavy rock - locomotive bass-lines and live-wire energy fused with musings of online weirdness, distinct Kiwi-isms, and wider reflections on the quiet rituals we fall into, or inherit, without releasing. Along with the release and announcement of a nationwide tour, Soft Bait also share a new music video for album focus-track and uneasy-anthem 'Sooner' where they trade speed for sway; steady, and suspicious. ' Bring in the good news' sings front-man Joshua Hunter - a final manifestation in the face of collective unrest and collapse Life Advice lands like well-meaning wisdom from a mate you definitely shouldn't be taking advice from - half true, half twisted, but still ringing in your ears the next day. Nissan's Oddball Car Under Scrutiny After Airbag Injures Driver
Airbags Are Meant To Protect Drivers, Not Hurt Them According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), frontal airbags have saved over 50,000 lives over a 30-year period, between 1987 and 2017. That's significant, but when the deployment of an airbag goes wrong, this impressive safety device can quickly turn into a lethal weapon. The NHTSA is now investigating an event where the driver of a 2009 Nissan Cube was injured when struck by an airbag module, which incorrectly detached from the steering wheel in what was a single-vehicle crash. So, it should perhaps come as little surprise that the 2009 Nissan Cube involved in this latest incident is fitted with Takata PSDI-X inflators. Nissan and New Leaf LLC (previously known as Takata) have determined that the rupture was found at the weld point between the inflator cap and inflator housing. After striking the driver and causing injuries that required medical attention, the airbag module ended up in the Cube's back seat. The airbag cushion and inflator were still attached to the module housing. As of this writing, no recall has been issued, as only a completed investigation can determine whether a recall is necessary. The 2009 model year was the first of the third-gen Cube, but it was also the first Cube to be exported to North America. It is one of Nissan's most unusual designs, and it's still a bizarre sight on roads today. RICHMOND HILL, ON, June 16, 2025 /CNW/ - The Ontario Court of Justice has found New Leaf: Living and Learning Together Inc., an organization that provides support for adults with developmental disabilities and/or other complex needs, guilty of multiple violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), in connection with the preventable death of 50-year-old Personal Support Worker Ashiru Awoyemi, who drowned while supervising a client alone at New Leaf's swimming pool, with no lifeguard present, in February 2021. Despite the guilty verdict, nobody involved will face jail time. Instead, New Leaf and one of the managers involved in the tragedy will face fines totalling $255,000, which are payable over a ten-year period and will mostly go to the Ministry of Finance, not Mr. Awoyemi's family. SEIU Healthcare, the union representing Ashiru and other workers at New Leaf, says the verdict confirmed that this was a preventable tragedy and that the weak sentence will not send the much-needed message that unsafe working conditions will be met with real consequence. "$255,000. That's the price our justice system is putting on the life of a care worker," said SEIU Healthcare President Tyler Downey. "The neglect by New Leaf led to the death of a father and husband who went to work that day so he could provide to his family in Nigeria and reach his dream of bringing them to Canada. Instead, his life was stolen, and his families' dreams were shattered. These weak fines are not justice and won't prevent more tragedies in the future. If you kill a worker, you should go to jail." New Signing Soft Bait Announce Sophomore Album 'Life Advice' + Share First Single 'New Leaf'
It is our absolute pleasure to welcome Soft Bait to the Flying Nun Records roster. Soft Bait are a four-piece from Tāmaki Makaurau making pointed, off-centre post-punk that barrels forward with restless momentum. Since forming in 2020, they've built a reputation off the back of their electric live shows, sharp lyricism, and a knack for turning everyday absurdities and half-remembered pop culture into something worth shouting about. Soft Bait's sophomore offering, 'Life Advice ' is out on the 25th July, both digitally and on black or silver vinyl LP. Today, the band share the first single, ' New Leaf ' — a track that picks apart gossip, group dynamics, and the mess left behind. As vocalist Josh Hunter puts it: 'New Leaf is a song about gossiping, seeking social acceptance and connection among groups. People projecting their own sense of arrogance or insecurity onto others. The lack of self-awareness to understand — or care to understand — the effect of their actions as they move onto the next drama and hysteria. Leaving the subject to pick up the pieces.' That tension runs through the whole track. Driven by a locked-in, repetitive bass line, the new single possesses an anxious and relentless energy. Hooky and sharp like it's pacing the room, 'New Leaf' is innately loud, unfiltered and fun. It holds a mirror up to some of the messier sides of social interaction; the messiness, posturing, gossip, and the chaos we leave in our wake. The video, created by Patrick Hickley and Jolin Lee, takes those ideas and drops them into a dusty VHS wedding from the early-90s. Stitching themselves into the celebration as the unofficial wedding band — filmed lo-fi, green screen, digi-cam style. It's part nostalgia trip, part fever dream.
