Farah, Bonnie win big at SAM-100PLUS awards

PETALING JAYA: National para powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin and lawn bowler Farah Ain Abdullah emerged the big winners at the 2024 Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100PLUS awards ceremony today (July 14). Farah took the Best Athlete award after enjoying a strong season last year which saw her winning the singles gold at the World Indoor Bowls Championships (Channel Islands) as well as gold (fours category) at the Pattaya Asian Championships. Badminton doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, tower runner Soh Wai Ching, tenpin bowler Sin Li Jane and wushu exponent Tan Cheong Min were the other athletes shortlisted for the award. Bonnie claimed the Best Para Athlete award. Bonnie enjoyed another strong season in 2024 which saw him breaking his own world record en route to defending his gold at the Paris Olympics. Shuttler Cheah Liek Hou and track and field trio Ziyad Zolkefli (shot put F20), Latif Romly (long jump T20) and Eddy Bernard (100m T44) were the other athletes shortlisted for the award. Both Bonnie and Farah received RM10,000 prize money and a trophy each. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh officiated the awards ceremony held at a hotel in Petaling Jaya today (July 14). Swimmer Dhuha Zulfikry, who shone at last year's Sarawak Malaysia Games, won the Best Young Athlete award. For the journalism awards, the New Straits Times Press' Ferzalfie Fauzi (Harian Metro) won the Best News Report (print) award while TV3's Saiyed Ismail Saiyed Hussin and Abdul Razak Ibrahim won the Best Commentary award (electronic).
