Bite Club: Ace of Wingz brings a unique twist to classic chicken wings
Just when you thought you'd seen everything that chicken wings had to offer, Ace of Wingz swoops in to show you how wildly inventive the classic, mouthwatering dish can be. State of play: Ace of Wingz started as a food truck in 2021, later expanding to a brick-and-mortar location at 19th and Northern avenues. The restaurant recently announced a second spot, slated to open July 4 at 3923 E. Thomas Road. While the original is take-out only — if you're determined to eat there, like I was, they've got a folding table out front — the second restaurant will include dine-in service, per the Phoenix New Times. Zoom in: You've never had wings like this. Sure, you can go with traditional flavors like Buffalo and BBQ, but you also try unconventional sauces like hot apricot, raspberry and pineapple. "One day, I looked at traditional chicken wings and thought, 'Why do they all look the same?' I wanted to change that narrative," chef Abion Acoy told the New Times. And try loaded fries with many of the same sauces, fried seafood and more. Best bites: Since spicy, fruity flavors seemed to be a specialty, I ordered half my wings with the hot strawberry sauce, and got lemon pepper for the other half. I also snagged an order of the loaded elote fries. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the wings were delicious, giving you the full fruit flavor without being overly sweet. Not as spicy as I would've liked, but great nonetheless. The fries were great, too — a perfect blend of two great snacks.

Filberto's Mexican Restaurant Chain Abruptly Closes 8 Arizona Locations
Many Arizonans are very familiar with Filiberto's Mexican Restaurants. Whether it's the burritos or the 24/7 drive-thrus, the chain is a well-known staple in the state. Filiberto's restaurants have become a much-replicated concept. Now, eight Filiberto's in Arizona have shut their doors all at once. The spate of closings surprised and baffled customers. "Why are a bunch of locations closed with just a sign on the door that says closed. No explanation or nothing. Just a handwritten know what's up?" wrote one befuddled person on Reddit. The Filiberto's restaurants are owned by John Schwimmer. His LinkedIn page describes him as the owner and operator of "eight Filberto's Mexican Food Restaurants in the Valley" through Compadres Group. According to the Phoenix New Times, the eight locations "closed with no explanation." Cesar Tenorio, described by the New Times as "a member of the family that founded Filiberto's in 1993," told the publication that Schwimmer shut down the restaurants after 'unforeseen medical issues.' Tenorio's family hopes to take them over, according to the New Times. The news site listed the shuttered locations as being in Phoenix, Avondale, Apache Junction, Chandler, Peoria, and Scottsdale. On Reddit, some people said they had stopped going to the restaurants because of the costs. The chain celebrated 30 years in Arizona in 2023. Axios labeled Filiberto's as an Arizona institution that started out in San Diego. Filiberto's restaurants are "Arizona's most ubiquitous and endlessly copied restaurant chain," Axios wrote. In 2018, there were 79 locations in Arizona, from Yuma to Flagstaff, the magazine Mexican Restaurant Chain Abruptly Closes 8 Arizona Locations first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 11, 2025

Controversial county attorney receives unwanted gift at her home on Valentine's Day
A controversial county attorney received a disgusting package at her Arizona home just in time for Valentine's Day. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell told Phoenix police on February 14 that somebody had sent her a package containing a 'squished brown substance' she believed was feces with a white envelope that had her name on it, according to a police report originally obtained by the Phoenix New Times. 'Rachel stated that she and her husband went to dinner last night and when they got home, her husband told her there was a package at the door,' the report states. 'After bringing it inside, she opened it and found the bag.' The sender was only listed as 'AS Enterprises' from Allison Park, Pennsylvania, which Mitchell said she researched - and found that it is a service that sends feces through the mail. The company has received numerous complaints to the Better Business Bureau, which notes that it also goes by the name according to the Arizona Republic. Its website says it will send 'your friend, or enemy, a healthy heap of some of the nastiest, stinkiest, fresh poop packages that anyone has ever seen' and even offers different types of animal feces: cow, elephant and gorilla, as well as a combination 'in one big nasty mess.' AS Enterprises also assures its clients that the feces looks and smells disgusting - though it is unclear whether the company uses real dung as its website only says the 'mad scientist' who packages it knows the truth. It also its clients that nothing can be traced back to the sender and even offers a cash payment option to help customers feel more comfortable about their anonymity. But the senders must agree that their intention is sending the feces is for fun and not to threaten or harass the recipient. In Mitchell's case, however, police are investigating the suspicious package as 'harassment by communication,' as the county attorney told officers she wants the sender prosecuted. She provided the cops with footage from her Ring camera, as she shared who she suspected could have sent her the gift. She said that 'off the top of her head' she suspected it could have come from a 'suspended attorney named Vladimir Gagic' whom she accused of harassing her husband. He denied any involvement and said he was never even questioned by Phoenix police when contacted by the New Times - as he questioned whether the investigation was warranted. 'She calls the cops for f***ing fake poop. Really?' Gagic said. 'Is that the best use of law enforcement resources in the county?' Mitchell also suggested the fecal matter may have come from people who were upset at her office for refusing to prosecute an animal abuse case or anti-Israel activists whom she charged with trespassing at Arizona State University's Tempe campus. The county attorney, meanwhile, is also facing a civil suit for giving a plea deal to a soccer coach accused of sexually abusing an underage girl, according to the New Times. But authorities told the Arizona Republic on Monday they are still investigating the incident and did not have an update on whether the feces was tested to be genuine.
