Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano handed medical suspension after third fight
Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano have faced off three times in the ring and will now be forced to take some time away from the ring after their trilogy fight Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano are set to be sidelined with mandatory suspensions after their third encounter on Friday night. The Bray-born champion narrowly secured a split decision in their first bout three years ago and then again claimed victory over Serrano on the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson undercard last November. However, after 20 bruising rounds between them, their trilogy fight ended lacklustre, falling short of the hype that preceded it. In a somewhat anticlimactic end after 10 rounds, one judge ruled the final face-off a draw, but the other two tipped the scales in Taylor's favour, scoring her 97-93 and allowing her to maintain her crown as the undisputed super-lightweight world champ, reports All Out Fighting. As they both prepare for some downtime following another full-distance showdown, it's not just weary bones prompting rest but also the regulations of the New York State Athletic Commission. Their rules decree: "No licensed professional combative sports participant shall be allowed to participate in any combative sport match or exhibition in this State until at least seven days have elapsed since his or her last match or exhibition. "And no licensed combative sports participant shall compete in any combative sport match or exhibition within seven days of competing in such a match or exhibition in this State." Following her third victory over Serrano, Taylor praised her opponent: "I'd like to thank Amanda Serrano, what an amazing fighter; we made history three times and it's a privilege to share the ring with her. We are history makers forever. I was planning to come in here quite disciplined and smart." Taylor also weighed in on her future plans: "I don't know, I just don't want to fight Amanda Serrano again. She punches too hard. I have a huge ton of respect for Amanda, she's such a warrior." Serrano meanwhile expressed disappointment at the outcome, stating: "I tried something different. It was all about working smarter, not harder. I tried to keep my distance, try not to go in there and fight with her because apparently it didn't work the first two fights. I got a couple of rounds. I don't know. Honestly, I have to go back and see it. My team said I won. Obviously, I'm going to go with what my team tells me. They were telling me what to do and I was trying to apply it in the ring. We tried to stay with the long punches and one-twos, and it just wasn't enough." On the undercard, Britain's Ellie Scotney dethroned Mexican Yamileth Mercado to become the new WBC super bantamweight world champion with a unanimous decision win. Meanwhile, Savannah Marshall faced disappointment as she narrowly missed out on the IBF and WBO super middleweight titles, losing to American Shadasia Green by split decision. In the co-main event, Alycia Baumgardner successfully defended her undisputed super featherweight title with a unanimous decision against Spain's Jennifer Miranda. When is Katie Taylor's next fight? Immediately after the showdown, the 39-year-old admits she is not ready to make a decision on her fighting future right now. The boxing icon arguably has nothing left to prove in the ring and has achieved so much in the sport of boxing. Speaking on her future, Taylor said: 'I don't know. "I'm just going to enjoy this victory right now, and sit back and reflect. I'll make a decision on that soon. I'm very, very happy with tonight's performance and the amount of work we put in the last few months. It was a gruelling few months of preparation. We live for these kind of fights and I was so glad I was able to showcase what I can do tonight.'

Katie Taylor must serve suspension following Amanda Serrano win in trilogy fight
Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano have been slapped with mandatory suspensions after their third showdown. The Bray boxer, who had triumphed in their previous encounters, emerged victorious once more with a majority decision following a tactical battle at Madison Square Garden. Taylor was favoured by two judges with scores of 97-93, while the third judge scored it even, 95-95, after 10 closely contested rounds. After ruling out another rematch with Serrano, Taylor, 39, was tight-lipped about her future in the ring. She said: "I don't know, I just don't want to fight Amanda Serrano again. She punches too hard. I have a huge ton of respect for Amanda, she's such a warrior. "It's a pleasure to share a ring with her. We have made history three times. We are history makers forever. "I thought I was boxing very smart, she wasn't able to catch me very much tonight. But it's always close against Amanda." Serrano, who has now been bested by Taylor in three of her four professional defeats, reflected on her strategy, saying: "We tried to stay with the long punches and one-twos, and it just wasn't enough." The fighters are set for some downtime, with the first part enforced by New York State Athletic Commission regulations. According to the commission's rules, they are barred from fighting for a minimum of seven days, which would be standard practice regardless. The regulations specify: "No licensed professional combative sports participant shall be allowed to participate in any combative sport match or exhibition in this State until at least seven days have elapsed since his or her last match or exhibition. "And no licensed combative sports participant shall compete in any combative sport match or exhibition within seven days of competing in such a match or exhibition in this State." The trilogy bout between the pair proved more tactical than their earlier encounters, with a slower pace and fewer punches landing. Both boxers struggled to establish dominance early, with just three punches finding their mark in the first round. Operating at greater range than in their previous encounters, Taylor sought to dictate from the centre of the ring while landing effective counters as she enticed Serrano forward. Multiple rounds were in the balance as tension mounted towards the finale, with Serrano pressing forward and trapping Taylor on the ropes during the fifth, though the champion managed to escape. Taylor sustained marking beneath her right eye in the eighth but claimed the closing two rounds to secure victory. On the undercard, American Alycia Baumgardner defended her undisputed super featherweight crown via unanimous decision against Spain's Jennifer Miranda.

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano both suspended following trilogy fight
Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano must now take a break from boxing following their third fight at Madison Square Garden, which again went the way of the Irish superstar Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano have both been handed mandatory suspensions following their trilogy fight. The Irish icon, who had won the previous two meetings, won on a majority decision after a tactical battle at Madison Square Garden in New York. Two of the judges scored the bout 97-93 in Taylor's favour. The third judge was unable to split them after 10 tight rounds, scoring it 95-95. Taylor ruled out a fourth meeting with the Puerto Rican, but was cagey when asked whether she would continue to fight. She said: 'I don't know, I just don't want to fight Amanda Serrano again. She punches too hard. I have a huge ton of respect for Amanda, she's such a warrior. It's a pleasure to share a ring with her. We have made history three times. We are history makers forever. 'I thought I was boxing very smart, she wasn't able to catch me very much tonight. But it's always close against Amanda.' Serrano, who has suffered three of her four professional losses to Taylor, said she had tried to work 'smarter, not harder.' The 36-year-old said: 'We tried to stay with the long punches and one twos, and it just wasn't enough.' Both fighters will now enjoy a period of rest, the initial part of which is obligatory under the rules of the New York State Athletic Commission, which the fight fell under. The commission dictates they cannot fight again for at least seven days, which naturally wouldn't have occurred anyway. The rulebook states: 'No licensed professional combative sports participant shall be allowed to participate in any combative sport match or exhibition in this State until at least seven days have elapsed since his or her last match or exhibition.' It adds: 'And no licensed combative sports participant shall compete in any combative sport match or exhibition within seven days of competing in such a match or exhibition in this State.' The third meeting between the two was cagier than their previous clashes, simmering throughout with fewer punches landed. Neither fighter was able to impose themselves early on, with just three punches connecting in the opening round. With both fighters operating from more of a distance than their previous meetings, Taylor looked to control the centre of the ring and landed some good counter shots as she drew Serrano onto her. Several rounds could have gone either way as the fight built to a tense climax, Serrano coming forward more and forcing Taylor into a corner in the fifth round, but the champion fought her way out. Taylor was marked under the right eye in the eighth, but edged the final two rounds to secure the verdict. In the co-headline bout, American Alycia Baumgardner retained her undisputed super featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Spain's Jennifer Miranda.

Katie Taylor set to pocket $6m from New York trilogy fight bonanza
Irish boxer and great rival Amanda Serrano to pocket another multi-million pay day from three-peat at Madison Square Garden Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano go head-to-head for a third time in just over three years in the early hours of tomorrow morning for another multi-million pay day that has elevated the female fight game to another level. The purses for the Madison Square Garden fight have not been made public by the New York State Athletic Commission that licenses it, but with Netflix on board again and streaming live to its 300 million-plus subscribers, estimates again range from $6m (€5.1m) for both to a high of $18m (€15.4m) being divided between them. When they fought in Texas there were projections of $6m for Taylor and $8m for Serrano, who fights under the banner of the promoters, MVP. But Eddie Hearn, Katie Taylor's Matchroom promoter, suggested in the aftermath of that Texas fight, that it was lower than that. Whatever the purse and the outcome, it looks like this fight will be the last instalment. MVP co-promoter Nakisa Bidarian cast doubt on a fourth run earlier in the week, while Serrano suggested that tomorrow would be a final instalment. 'I don't think so [another meeting]. I'm kind of tired of Katie Taylor. We have great, great moments together,' said Serrano. 'But, hey, two is better than one, right? She'll have two and I'll have one, so she can live with that.' Taylor is adamant that she has more to give and can improve again on previous bouts, even aged 39. Taylor and Serrano both stepped up on the scales for the ceremonial weigh-in at Madison Square Garden last night, but earlier in the day at a midtown hotel the official weigh-in took place. Serrano came in right at the 136-pound catchweight, Taylor slightly lower at 135.8lbs. The super-lightweight limit is 140 pounds and that's what they fought at first time out, but a 138-pound catchweight was agreed for Texas and now it has been set at 136lbs. Serrano has fought at seven different weight levels and is coming up from a low of 115lbs to make this rivalry happen. The fight is expected to take place sometime after 2am Irish time and will be streamed on Netflix, whose coverage gets under way from 1am.
