PHOTO: SUPPLIED A major South Otago project has been recognised with a brace of national building awards, thanks to "innovation and community spirit". Te Pou O Mata-Au Clutha District War Memorial & Community Centre (TPOMA) took top honours at the 2025 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards in Auckland recently, winning gold and being crowned the national overall winner in the civic category. The awards, which celebrate excellence in commercial construction across New Zealand, recognised the Balclutha hub for its "outstanding design, sustainability, and community impact". Judges praised the project for its thoughtful integration of public needs, architectural innovation and collaborative execution. The $25 million facility was completed in 2023 by Milton-based firm Calder Stewart, making it a whole-community project, Calder Stewart Otago regional manager Richard Johnson said. "This award is not just a win for the project team, it's a win for the entire community. "It shows what's possible when we come together with a shared purpose and a commitment to excellence." Designed as a "vibrant" gathering place for residents of all ages, the hub brought together essential services, flexible event spaces, and sustainable design features under one roof, Mr Johnson said. "Its success is a testament to the vision of the project team, including architects, engineers, contractors, and community stakeholders who worked closely to deliver a space that truly reflects the values and aspirations of the local community. "This recognition places Calder Stewart firmly on the map as a leader in community-focused development and sets a new benchmark for civic projects nationwide." The civic category award celebrates projects that demonstrate "exceptional public value". Judges said TPOMA stood out among a competitive field for its values of long-term adaptability, environmental responsibility, and inclusive design.

Generate's Impact Investment Wins Top Design Award

Back in 2022, Generate partnered with Community Finance to make a $14 million impact investment to finance 35 new homes for people in need, in partnership with Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust. It's now proud to report that the Willard Street project, completed in 2023, has now been recognised with an award for its high-quality homes that lead the way in design, performance and community impact. The Willard Street development won Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust a Gold Award (Residential) at the 2025 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, presented by Master Builders. The awards celebrate projects that demonstrate innovation, quality and collaboration across New Zealand's building sector. Willard Street includes 35 warm, comfortable homes designed for modern public housing. The new Homestar 7-rated homes replace 26 ageing bedsits built in the 1940s. This investment was one of Generate's impact investments, which aim to make a positive difference to the lives of New Zealanders, whilst providing fair market returns for our Generate KiwiSaver Scheme members. Generate Portfolio Manager, Ayrton Oliver, says this recognition further reinforces the value of the project. 'Working together with Community Finance and Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust shows the potential influence that investing can have on social outcomes for New Zealand, as well as the financial returns for Generate KiwiSaver Scheme members over the long-term,' he says. 'Responsible investing is one of our core values at Generate, so we often seek out investment opportunities that have the potential to drive both positive financial returns and positive social impact - we don't believe these need to be mutually exclusive.' In 2020 Generate was the first KiwiSaver scheme to invest in social housing via a $21 million investment managed by Community Finance into Salvation Army Community Bonds. That investment supported 118 warm, dry, affordable community houses across three locations.

Building projects nationally recognised

Queenstown building companies have this week been recognised on the national stage for local projects. Cook Brothers Construction, Naylor Love Central Otago and Lakes Building Co have all been honoured at the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, which recognise the contribution of entire project teams. Cook Brothers won the value award ($10million to $25m), the tourism and leisure project award and picked up a gold award — recognising projects which receive a judging score between 900 and 1000 points — for Arrowtown's Ayrburn hospitality precinct, specifically the meticulous restoration of the Woolshed, Manure Room and Dairy. Owned by Winton, project partners were Aquaheat, ENGCO, Qube Consultants Ltd and SA Studios. The entry says the project balanced heritage with modern craftsmanship, utilising original schist and river stones and timber to preserve the site, while also significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Cook Brothers also picked up silver in the civic category for the Salvation Army's new building at Remarkables Park, on which it worked with 1Point618, Consort QS, Powell Fenwick Consultants and TSA Riley. Naylor Love won a gold award in the heritage and restoration category for its Speight's Ale House rebuild, which included DGSE, Ignite Architects, Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers, Origin Consultants, Wainwright & Hickey and Heritage Stonework. The iconic building's restoration followed a devastating fire in 2023 — completed last September, the project preserved its architectural heritage, while bringing it in line with modern building codes. The building company also won two gold awards in the commercial category, one of which was for an office complex at 22 Wiltshire St, Arrowtown, which it worked on with Cosgroves, Hadley Consultants, Lewis Bradford, Origin Heritage Architects, Rubix and SB Design. Naylor Love's other gold award in that category was for Invercargill's HWR Tower. Lakes Building Co won a silver award in the tourism and leisure category for Arthurs Point's Cargo Brew Hall, which it worked on in conjunction with Yoke.
