USC redshirt freshman Elijah Newby discusses switching from linebacker to defensive end
As a true freshman last season, USC linebacker Elijah Newby redshirted. However, he still appeared in five games for the Trojans (four regular season games plus the Las Vegas Bowl), finishing the year with two tackles. In 2025, Newby will look to play a bigger role for USC. However, he will be doing so at a new position, having made the switch from linebacker to defensive line during the offseason. In a recent podcast interview with Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette of 247Sports, Newby discussed the decision to switch positions. "Nothing is really gonna be handed to you in life," Newby said. "Especially on this football level. So being able to be selfless and put something bigger than me out there, and help in a[n] aspect that I wouldn't even think I would be helping in, I'm always down for. "If that's changing positions, being that motivator on the sideline, it's whatever. I think that transition was a great transition." USC fans will certainly appreciate Newby's team-first mindset. It will be interesting to see what impact he can make at his new position this fall.

Guelph Storm look to put in bid to host the 2027 Memorial Cup
The Guelph Storm want to host the 2027 Memorial Cup. The annual junior hockey tournament returns to Ontario in 2027, which would also mark the city's bicentennial year. Matt Newby, the team's vice-president of business operations, said it's an opportunity to attract thousands of visitors to the Royal City. 'It's a chance … to welcome over 20,000 visitors from outside our region, and hopefully can celebrate with us,' Newby said. City politicians will hear the organization's bid at the committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday. According to a staff report, the organization estimates it would cost $3.1 million to host the tournament and is requesting $700,000 from the City of Guelph. The funds requested would also include $100,000 worth of in-kind contributions to support the tournament, including no charge for facility rental fees, club seat licence fees and event facility staff charges for the tournament's duration. Newby said the Storm have a lot of advantages in hosting such an event. 'I think when we look at where we are relative to Toronto, when we look at where we are relative to a train that comes and stops 200 steps from the Sleeman Centre, there's millions of people that can hop on a GO Train and come to Guelph without any driving,' he said. He said the team has had preliminary discussions with investment partners. 'Our ownership is prepared to cut a match, dollar for dollar, any commitment that comes in from sponsorships to make this work and make it a great event, something that our city would be proud of,' he said. If the Storm are able to make additional profits from the Memorial Cup, Newby also said the funds would be donated back to city to support the Sleeman Centre. If the organization gets approval from city council, the organization can formally submit a bid to the league in August. Story continues below advertisement The host city is expected to be announced by this fall.

City sign attacking midfielder Alex Newby after Altrincham exit
YORK City have completed their second signing of the Summer - boosting their ranks with attacking midfielder Alex Newby. Newby will officially join York on July 1 upon the expiry of his contract with fellow National League side Altrincham, having reached double figures in goals for the Robins last campaign. Advertisement The 29-year-old brings welcome experience to the City fold, similarly to their first signing of the Summer in Ollie Banks. Newby began his footballing career in the academy of Bolton Wanderers, before turning professional with hometown club Barrow. He made one appearance for the Bluebirds in a bench appearance against Southport, as well as having a loan spell with local side Kendal Town. The midfielder would drop into non-league permanently to join Clitheroe, before climbing up the pyramid to join Chorley in the National League North. Newby stayed a Chorley player for three years, making 90 appearances and scoring 24 times, his first of which came against York in 2018. Advertisement He would also have multiple play-off campaigns with Chorley, which included a promotion into the National League. Following a season in the fifth tier, Newby made the step into the Football League and into Sky Bet League One, joining Rochdale in 2020. Newby did suffer relegation with the Dale to Sky Bet League Two in his first season, managing 82 appearances and 13 goals in two years. Another two years in the Football League would follow for Newby, joining fellow League Two side Colchester United. He made 34 appearances and scored three goals for the Essex-based side, which also included a loan spell with Altrincham. Advertisement Seven goals in 18 games for the Robins made his move permanent, where he has since helped Altrincham to a play-off semi-final in the 2023/24 season. Whilst Altrincham did narrowly miss out on the play-offs in the 2024/25 season, Newby scored 15 goals in 44 matches, proving to be a key player in Phil Parkinson's side. Speaking on his move to York, Newby commented: "It's brilliant to be here, it's a great move for me, it's something that I was really keen to get done as soon as it was mentioned. "Obviously, meeting the manager as well, I'm just really excited to get started."

Looking for the right kind of green tea
The Long Jing has been on my tea wish list simply because its reputation precedes it. Along with the Bi Luo Chun, the Long Jing sits at the top of the green tea pantheon, and on one's tea explorations. It is a name that comes up often enough until you cannot ignore it. The name Long Jing translates to Dragon Well, and follows in the Chinese tea tradition that tells of an old tea and fantastical tales that accompany it. At first, I found these stories to be quite the attractive hook, marvelling at how even a tea could inspire such legends. Lately though, I am more eager to push past the stories for the tea. And with the Long Jing, suffice to know that the tea gets its name from its place of origin—Longjing village in Hangzhou. Of all the tea styles, I have struggled with green tea the most, in part because the early greens I had were not very memorable. I was also put off by the heavy handed push by marketers towards adopting green tea for losing weight and being disease-free. While I never actively sought green tea, I welcomed the occasional flavourful greens that came my way. And I learnt to distinguish between the pan-roasted Chinese style and the steamed Japanese style, and my preference for the latter was for the colour and the umami hit. Still, it's been a sporadic dalliance at best. Also read: A tea lover's reflection on tradition and change Last week, a ceramicist friend was travelling to China, and I had to ask for some Long Jing tea, given that spring has just ended. All tea regions seem to celebrate green tea plucked in spring. An avowed coffee drinker, my friend was not impressed with the tea, doubting if it looked and sounded better than it was. I had no reference for it, and decided to abandon questions about when it was plucked and by whom and what grade it was. Instead, I decided to enjoy it for the tea it was. What a lovely aroma it had—the packet opened to the smells of a tea garden, that fresh leafy smell that is such a mood lifter. The leaves were the characteristic Long Jing flat leaf, which comes from the pan-frying process when the leaves are pressed against the sides of the pan. I chose to brew it in water that was hot, but not boiling (80–85 degrees Celsius is recommended), and tried a very short steep of 30 seconds before settling for longer (60-90 seconds) steeps. I topped it a few times. Two things that struck me were the smooth mouthfeel and the hit of umami that I was not expecting: I have grown to associate that with Japanese greens and yet, here was a pan-fired Chinese tea exhibiting it. Second, despite being a prized tea, it was effortlessly easy to like and drink. The myth and lore aside, the tea can speak for itself. Perhaps one just needs the right tea to start one's discovery. And for green tea, the Long Jing could very well be that tea. Also read: Do you value that cup of tea? Ms. Newby's celebrates 50 years of service
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Ms. Newby's was established in 1975 on the corner of Joan Avenue and Thomas Drive by Melva Newby. Melva named the business after herself, as one of the first women to open a bar in the area. 'My grandmother she did many things in our early life, and she always wanted to open the bar. And back in the seventies, it was very rare for a woman to be in the bar business. So she was one of the first in Panama City Beach,' Ms. Newby's Owner Will Pickenpaugh said. 'That was my grandfather's. That was David Newby, killer, and it was a strip club, and we decided to turn it into a more, you know, sophisticated kind of bar,' Newby's Too Owner Wesley Pickenpaugh said. The business has stayed in the family, it was passed down to Charlotte Newby. When she retired, the business went to her children, Will and Wesley Pickenpaugh. 'It's really like a family here. You know, so makes it that much more enjoyable to come to work every day,' Pickenpaugh said. They went on to open two other locations, called Newby's Brew and Booze and, Newby's Brew On The Bay. Each location offers a place where you can meet people from all walks of life. 'You'll meet a barber, then you'll meet like a plumber, and you'll meet everyone from all types of work. And they come in to drink, and it's just it's like a surreal moment,' Ms. Newbys's Bartender Sarah Rodriguez said.
