ONS secures extra cash to restore confidence in UK's economic statistics

Why you can trust Sky News A further £10m is to be spent on fixing shortfalls in the core numbers produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) amid a continuing lack of confidence in their accuracy. The body is tasked with producing official figures covering key areas of the economy and societal trends. It has faced particular criticism over the quality of its Labour Force Survey (LFS) - used to calculate employment figures. The Bank of England, which needs accurate readings for its rate-setting committee to make informed judgements, is among institutions to have expressed frustration with the numbers since the COVID pandemic. The problems at the ONS are not all financial. The Newport-based body's challenges include in areas such as the LFS. It hopes to have made improvements by spring next year. That will be of little comfort to the Bank which needs to know how much inflationary pressure is lingering in the jobs market, through things like wage growth, as it sets interest rates. The ONS confirmed that plans were being enacted to "urgently" improve the quality of its work in two areas - that covering the economy and population and the other its household and business data. The extra cash, to be spent over two years, is to fund the recruitment of up to 150 more economic data specialists, it said in a statement. The ONS also said that the UK Statistics Authority and Cabinet Office had agreed with a recommendation to temporarily separate the role of national statistician from that of ONS permanent secretary. This was in order to provide a greater focus on improving the quality of its core statistics. The ONS did not rule out revisions to past data in the months ahead. Acting director general for economic statistics, Grant Fitzner, said: "The ONS's Plan for Economic Statistics aims to restore confidence and improve the quality of our core statistics. "It is open about where things stand today and where we need to do better - and forms a crucial part of our response to the recent Office for Statistics Regulation review into economic statistics. "The Survey Improvement and Enhancement Plan does the same for our household and business surveys."

NBA: Dallas Mavericks pick Cooper Flagg with No.1 draft pick

By Wayne Sterling, CNN Duke University forward Cooper Flagg Photo: CNN The 18-year-old is the second youngest player ever to be drafted No. 1 overall. Only LeBron James was younger when he was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. "I feel amazing," Flagg said after his name was called by NBA commissioner Adam Silver. "It's a dream come true to be honest." Flagg paid homage to his family and his hometown. "I wouldn't want to share it with anyone else," he said. "I wouldn't be here without these people right here and all my people back home in Maine. … It just means so much to see everyone here and supporting me." Maine governor Janet Mills proclaimed June 25 as "Cooper Flagg Day," celebrating the Newport native's "remarkable basketball achievement." Flagg, the consensus 2024-2025 National College Player of the Year, cemented himself as one of the top players in college last season as a freshman. He averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.4 steals in 37 games for the Blue Devils, who lost in the men's basketball Final Four to the University of Houston in the final minutes. Flagg led Duke in all the five major statistical categories. Flagg became the fourth freshman in NCAA history to win the Wooden Award, given to the nation's top player. The other three players were Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, who will be Flagg's teammate in Dallas, and Zion Williamson. In January, Duke head coach Jon Scheyer said about his star, "He's a savant with the game. He just really has an amazing understanding for what's required to win and how to elevate everyone around him." Unlike most No. 1 overall picks, Flagg will be a part of an established and talented team, consisting of NBA champions Kyrie Irving, Davis and Klay Thompson. Dallas will look to reset its franchise with the Flagg selection after trading popular All-NBA guard Luka Dončić in February to the Los Angeles Lakers, sparking a huge amount of backlash from their fanbase. Flagg said he wouldn't feel any pressure in Dallas after the controversial Dončić trade. "I'm just going to try to be myself all the time, and I'm going to push myself to be better and better every single day and make the most out of every day," Flagg said. "I'm not worried about living up to certain players' expectations or things like that. I'm just going to be myself and really just try to get better every single day that I can." He added: "I've heard it's an incredible fan base with incredible support, so I'll be excited to learn more about it and get down there." The Mavericks said Flagg will wear jersey No. 32. Flagg is the fifth Blue Devil to go No. 1 overall in the last 30 years, joining Elton Brand (Chicago Bulls 1999), Irving (Cavaliers 2011), Williamson (New Orleans Pelicans 2019) and Paolo Banchero (Orlando Magic 2022). -CNN

Jake Gyllenhaal grabs pick-me-up from Rhode Island coffee shop. Here's what he ordered

While filming an M. Night Shyamalan movie in the area last week, actor Jake Gyllenhaal paid a visit to one of Rhode Island's trendiest coffee shops – The Nitro Bar. Shop founder Audrey Finocchiaro posted a TikTok on June 18 with the caption, "oh and did I mention Jake Gyllenhaal came into @The Nitro Bar today 😭☕️😎." The coffee establishment, which was founded in 2016 as The Nitro Cart, has amassed almost half a million followers on TikTok. It has since expanded to three brick-and-mortar stores – one in Providence and two in Newport. Finocchiaro also posts business-related content to her personal TikTok account, where she snuck the Gyllenhaal news into a video caption. Finocchiaro did not specify which of the three locations Gyllenhaal visited. The shop did not immediately return a request for comment. When a commenter probed Finocchiaro on the star's coffee order, she replied with the details. "Almond milk latte and milk pastries," Finocchiaro wrote. The cafe's menu boasts several fruity caffeinated beverages, including a caramelized banana latte and blueberry matcha. However, the star of the show – and the company's namesake – is the nitro cold brew. It's a cold-brewed coffee infused with nitrogen, which gives it a foamy head akin to draft beer. Gyllenhaal, an Oscar-nominated actor, is set to star in the upcoming 2026 Shyamalan film, "Remain." Providence is the motion picture's primary filming location. Word spread that Shyamalan would film part of his movie last Wednesday in Warren, and many locals were on the lookout for Gyllenhaal and other celebrities. Passersby spotted the "Remain" crew setting up at Coffee Depot on Main Street. Shyamalan and his crew were also seen chowing down on chowder while waiting to board the Prudence Island Ferry in Bristol. Visitors can grab a latte, like Gyllenhaal, at one of The Nitro Bar's three locations. The Nitro Bar is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 228 Broadway in Providence and 404 Thames St. in Newport. Also in Newport, the 2 Pond Ave. location is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This article originally appeared on The Providence Journal: Jake Gyllenhaal visits The Nitro Bar for coffee while filming 'Remain'
