Stephen Fry reveals he's 'extraordinarily grateful for life'

Speaking at Newport Beach Film Festival just a few months ago, Fry took to the stage and spoke about his past in a rare public appearance. The star-studded event at Raffles at The OWO celebrated the best and brightest of the UK and Ireland's creative industries. Final ep #WhatIBelieve out now with none other than Stephen Fry! From the uncomfortable truth of AI to the peril of being 'right' over being 'effective', it's a fascinating 40mins covering his beliefs/values. Here he is discussing the dichotomy of humanity — Humanists UK (@Humanists_UK) July 17, 2025 The prestigious Icon Award was presented to Fry in recognition of his remarkable contribution across a varied career spanning more than 25 years. Speaking on stage, he said: 'I have every reason to be extraordinarily grateful for my life. I grew up as someone who was pretty much hopeless at everything; I couldn't sing, I couldn't catch a ball. "I was one of those rather unfortunate uncoordinated children who would clap their hands when it came towards them – I was mocked in school for not being able to dance, to play music, to draw, to paint. But I discovered I loved telling stories.' Reflecting upon his time at Uppingham boys' boarding school in Rutland, he would tell stories after 'lights out', which ignited his passion for performing. 'I would […] play with words and language, and to my enormous surprise this one thing we all share – the ability to speak to each other, the ability to make up stories – is not as grand as being able to run fast, catch, jump, or paint or draw, or play music, because we can all do it. "It is that very fact that we can all do it that makes it so extraordinarily wonderful; when actors get together, tell stories, become other people and entertain the world. Recommended reading: 'I have learnt everything in the past 45 years since I was let loose [in the world of acting] and I've had nothing but the most extraordinary pleasure working with incredible people, people who are so fascinating and interesting. "I spend a great deal of time not in the trailer because I love talking to crew people, and craftspeople, and technicians, and fellow actors, gossiping and laughing. It is the greatest privilege in the world. '[Playwright] Noel Coward had a sign above his desk that said 'work is more fun than fun', and if you are lucky enough to find work is more fun than fun, then really you have drawn first prize in the lottery of life.'

The Costa Mesa City Council on Tuesday named Asst. City Manager Cecilia Gallardo-Daly as interim city manager while officials seek to replace Lori Ann Farrell Harrison, who was terminated during a May 6 closed session council meeting. Gallardo-Daly's appointment comes nearly one and a half years after she was hired on as assistant in December 2023, having come from the same position at the city of San Clemente. Her promotion comes with a pay increase, from $277,932 annually to $330,216, according to figures provided by the city. While the council also discussed the city manager search during Tuesday's closed session, no news was reported from the meeting. Officials, however, on May 20 approved retaining employment attorney Greg Labate of Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP to defend the city in connection with anticipated litigation, according to city spokesman Tony Dodero. 'It's going to take us a minute to find a permanent city manager, and I feel confident we are in good hands right now with our interim,' Councilwoman Andrea Marr said of Gallardo-Daly Tuesday. 'Thank you for stepping into this role.' Also Tuesday, the Costa Mesa City Council approved a one-year lease agreement with the UCLA Bruins football team for use of the city's Jack Hammett Sports Complex as a 2025 pre-season training camp location. The city in 2017 entered into a 10-year use agreement with the Los Angeles Chargers to conduct their annual summer training campus at the complex through 2026 at an annual cost of $150,570, along with other community benefits, but decided not to host the program in Costa Mesa this year, freeing up the fields for other players. Under the new agreement, UCLA would use the center from July 30 through Aug. 18 for a $160,000 facility fee, in addition to paying for temporary improvements associated with preparing the site. The team would also offer two youth camps for local youth ages 6 to 14, along with two youth practice sessions, 500 UCLA home game tickets and $25,000 to repair field conditions afterward.

Nicholas Cage Says He Got ‘Stuck in the Rip Tide' and ‘Could Have Died' While Training for ‘The Surfer': ‘I've Been Pounded to Smithereens'

Nicholas Cage nearly came face-to-face with a shark while training for a role in his new psychological thriller 'The Surfer.' The film, now in theaters, stars Cage as a nameless businessman who attempts to buy back his childhood home in Australia, only to find the property is protected by a gang of mysterious bullies who quickly make his life a living nightmare. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his preparations for the film, Cage said his surfing lessons ended up more dangerous than anticipated. I have surfed, but every time I've attempted surfing, I've been pounded to smithereens,' Cage revealed. 'I surfed down on Sunset Beach. When I was trying to learn, my teacher gave me a shortboard. I said, 'Look, I want a longboard.'' But even with a longboard, the waves still got the best of Cage. 'I just got pounded and literally got stuck in the rip tide, and they said they saw my board, they call it 'tombstone,' like that triangle top,' he says, pantomiming the tip of his board sticking straight up out of the water.' 'I'm climbing up the leash as I'm somersaulting, and I could have died,' Cage added. 'Now I have a young kid, I don't know if I want to do it anymore.' Cage's character in 'The Surfer' doesn't fare much better: the film, directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin, sees the eponymous surfer driven to madness when bullies insist he can't buy or surf at his childhood home. Though his Cage may not have been a natural surfer, he says he hasn't ruled out giving it another go. 'The goal is to retire, surf, drink red wine, and eat spaghetti.'
