Man charged in Newport News woman's killing on Marshall Avenue
A man has been charged three months after a woman was found slain in a Southeast Newport News home. On July 3, police announced charges against Oris Jerome Askew. Askew has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of assault in the commission of a felony for the death of 41-year-old Jerrice Wilkerson on March 29. Askew was already in custody on other charges, according to a release. When police arrived to the 1900 block of Marshall Avenue the afternoon of the killing, they found Wilkerson on the kitchen floor of her home and medics pronounced her dead almost immediately after arriving. 'While this arrest cannot bring back Ms. Wilkerson, it stands as a clear demonstration of the dedication and hard work of our investigative team,' said Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew. No other information has been released.

Newport News police warn residents of in-person scam involving bank accounts
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Newport News Police Department is advising citizens of an in-person scam involving cellular devices and bank accounts. Police said the suspects will usually be in a vehicle and approach residents about issues with their bank account. The suspect will claim to be locked out of their account and ask to have funds transferred. During the interaction, they request the victim's phone to conduct the transfer. Once in possession of the phone, the suspect manipulates the victim's bank accounts, causing a loss of funds. If you are approached by an unknown person claiming to have issues with their bank account, police urge citizens to please direct them to speak to their financial institution, avoid further engaging with them and contact the police department. Missing Newport News girl found safe
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police have issued a CODI Alert for a missing Newport News girl who was last seen on foot in the 100 block of Melville Drive. Winter Ganoe, 12, has brown hair, hazel eyes and is 5-foot-2, 160 pounds. Police said she was last seen wearing a lilac Hello Kitty shirt, blue pants and princess sneakers. Newport News police investigate credit card information theft at Walgreens
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police are looking for a suspect who stole a woman's credit card information and then used it in a Walgreens in Newport News. The Newport News Police Department was notified by a woman that her credit card information was used to purchase gift cards on April 16 and 17 at the Walgreens in the 600 block of J. Clyde Morris Boulevard.
